Most underrated AC/DC album. I got into band during Bon years & was never as keen on following era, but for me, this album had a particularly raw, bluesy sound & was the nearest thing they did to the previous era. RIP Malcolm Young.

I agree. This album got me through summer vacay in Nantucket Island in the summer of its release and subsequently my first Jackson and lessons. My first instructor on meeting asked “so what kind of music you want to play?” Wearing this album concert Tee, I simply pointed at my shirt. Nuff said. Their Fly on the Wall’s “send the man” was an everyday tune for me for 4 years.

I don't know how Brian can do that. Literally throwing his whole body behind each note. Amazing. It was really interesting to see him not quite "having it" on Flick of the Switch. He was getting mad at himself the whole time and you could see the look on his face at the end of the song that he was still pissed. But then, on "Nervous Shakedown," he sounded pretty much like the record and was clearly having a good time singing it. But, back to FotS - that song must be nearly impossible to sing. Not only the verses, but Brian has to do the heavy lifting on the chorus AND the fills ('blow you sky high') in between. It's just incredible. Like I said, I don't understand how he can do that even once, much less for a whole concert and then a 40+ year career. Incomprehensible.

The record could have benefited from a more experienced producer (it was "produced by AC/DC") and still sounded raw. There are lots of little things that Mutt would not have allowed, like a bad edit and a slightly monotonous use of the crash cymbal on "Nervous Shakedown" and the fact that "Deep in the Hole" wraps too quickly - it could have used a bridge; these two songs should have been part of the AC/DC main canon. Mutt-isms like making sure the band never plays the same riff the same way twice on an outro are sadly lacking.

Brian Johnson had so much power vocally in the early 80's . AC/DC played The Nutter Center in Fairborn , Ohio (Dayton) back in the early 2000's . Someone I know went to the concert and said they saw Brian puking over the side after a few songs into the gig . That tells you how hard it is to sing those songs . His bad diet and smoking and drinking didn't help . He had esophagus damage from years of this . I believe this is what happened to Ronnie James Dio as well . They were taught to belt it out from your core and if you have a belly full of greasy food , beer , that and stomach acid is going to be push up over and over . Brian is one tough SOB . And even though he can't sing'em like he used too . Nobody can sing them like he did . Maybe Dan McCafferty but he is gone . Check out Back in Black live in Japan in 1980 or 81 . Brian was a fuckin beast !

49:07 I’ve always loved this video, “Flick of the switch” is one of my top 3 Brian Johnson era albums. The title track is my favorite. It was nice to see this video of them jamming some of these songs in the studio, really raw & cool.

Call me a weirdo, but it's my favorite AC/DC album, period.
@flashy51502 жыл бұрын
@@josephvoth6461 I don’t call you a “weirdo”, it could very well be mine too, but I really love “For Those About To Rock” and obviously “Back in Black” but “BIB” is so overplayed on radio, I think that’s why I don’t appreciate it as much anymore. I like a lot of the songs that never made the radio. 🍻
@Schneids712 жыл бұрын
@@flashy5150 I agree a lot with what you say. Their known hits are great, but I can list a bunch of songs that never received airplay that can be considered as great or better than the “hits”
@josephvoth64612 жыл бұрын
@@flashy5150 I hear you. For me, there's something about Flick of the Switch and '74 Jailbreak that are so pure, in terms of AC/DC-ness crunch, that they just get be every time. But I love all of the albums up through the mid-80s. After that, I don't know the albums that well.
@flashy5150 Жыл бұрын
@@josephvoth6461 I totally agree, up until the early’80’s, they were awesome, after that, it seemed like they needed someone like “Mutt Lang” to produce them, take their ideas and make them platinum. They need a directional coach. “Jailbreak ‘74” is one of my favorites too, that raw tone, nothing beats it. They, like all others big bands, tend to get too “trendy” and tend to think that they can do it on their own, like a brand name. They just release mediocre albums over and over until they finally fade away. This is the way Van Halen did it and this is the way AC/DC are doing it, and they are both fading away. It’s sad but true. I still have to crank up the classic AC/DC though, it’s a staple to any rockers life, it’s what keeps us going 😜

Angus's touch, tone and feel is amazing. He does all the little things so darn well...vibrato, palm muting, varying the pick attack, using the knobs to adjust the p/u dynamics. He's more like a great Bluesman (like Muddy, BB, Freddie King, SRV, old school Hendrix/Clapton/Page/Gilmour). He can squeeze so much out of a single note. Love it!

Theres ton of great talent..but these are different times...I suspect you're old like myself...(im 55) ...I'm in a timewarp myself...I mainly listen to the music of my youth...but when I look I'm bewildered by all the new music that's been made over the last couple of decades....(missed as i was too busy bringing up a family) .occasionally I'll check out "new" artists I've overlooked...over the last 30 years...and as CDs can be bought so cheap 2nd hand ive bought their entire output..in one fell swoop on Ebay...for example ive discovered Bjork...Taylor Swift...The Black Crowes...Prince...Jewel...Metallica...Tori Amos...and my son is constantly introducing me to new current bands...too many to be fair so I usually go backto my old favourites as im lazy...hes alwaysgoingto concerts ...of course the days of bands like ACDC Van..the Smiths...Oasis..Blur...Van Halen...Madonna...Iron maiden.. and all the others selling millions of records and living extravagant luxury lifestyles from living off the sales of a few weeks making a album and playing to massive stadiums are not as likely...that said i noticed that legacy act still fill stadiums charging a fortune for tickets...im too lazy to bother to see them though as going to concerts is a bit too much like hard work...its like payingto be uncomfortable for a few hours to see some tiny figures1/2 a mile away...or watch them on a massiveTV screen...on a more modest grass toots level..these days is all got a bit more real and smaller scale...as far as Where's the talent.?...well a quick look on KZbin will show a staggering amount of really young players who quite frankly are far more skilled than the average players in my days.( myself included)...its just that sadly guitar is a niche pastime....in my day if you mentioned you played guitar generally people were at the least mildly interested...asking about your guitars and type of music you play... are you in a band? etc..these days you say you play its like ...they'd be more interested and impressed if you told them you've watched last nights episode of I'm a celebrity get me out of here the night before...lol...

Just a reminder that the sound coming out of this studio is top notch and out of the ball park. compare to sometimes arenas or stadium , where the sound will get lost or reverb too fast. Full blast doesn't always mean top quality as we can hear it here. 🔊🎶🎼
