Hi Creators,
Understanding how to UV map your models is key to make your 3d assets look realistic. In the past tutorial you learned about the theory of uv mapping and planar projection. In this tutorial, we will go over the 'rules' of uv mapping as well as how to uv map a complicated object, like a box.
In this tutorial, we go over the planar mapping, projection, cut, sew, move and sew, and other great tools.
This is a multi-part tutorial, so keep an eye for more!

I can tell you are a teacher. You are a life saver and a game changer! There are talented guys on here with tutorials, but it takes a while to comb through them all to find a teacher that you can learn from. You don't hmm and huh or bounce from thought to thought. Your speech has a good tempo and the pace you move at makes following along SO MUCH EASIER. None of the frantic clicking all over or falling off-topic. Thank you for your time and effort! Now I must go and binge-watch your videos (sorry Netflix not tonight).

@@AcademicPhoenixPlus Thank you, in your third video I was having some trouble uv mapping the sphere. I was wondering if you could maybe do another video on uv mapping spheres as there's no almost no other tutorials for Maya. There's some other videos that use some strange methods like cutting the sphere in half but then you get the texture mirrored. I was able to UV my sphere but I still noticed a bit of distortion. If there's any method you would recommend, I would appreciate it!

I have a problem that I can't seem to figure out for weeks. Whenever I cut an edge, my UV immediately turns red and flipping it doesn't help. I've tried cutting a few different ways but it still turns red no matter what I do. It's just a simple model of a briefcase. I've tried reversing the normals too but it didn't change anything. Do you know what could be causing this problem?

@AcademicPhoenixPlus
@AcademicPhoenixPlus 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a good question, Hopeplayzz! When you try to export the UVs, if it is not in the UV 0-1 space, it will not export. So if you try to textures something, you won't be able to because you cannot see where the UVs are. I hope that makes sense!

Hi, what is the best way to us map a surface shattered in many pieces or even a particle system?
@AcademicPhoenixPlus
@AcademicPhoenixPlus 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm not very strong in the dynamics part of 3d. I would imagine you would have a UV mapped piece, and then a UV mapped of the shattered pieces. I don't think there is a uv map for a particle system, but I could be wrong. Sorry! Not much help!

Hi, whenever I try to UV one object it applies that UV/texture to all of the other objects in my scene. I try isolate object but that hasn't seemed to help. Can you think of any reason why this is happening? Great tutorials btw, they helped a lot.
@AcademicPhoenixPlus
@AcademicPhoenixPlus 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Sara, I'm sorry you are having a challenge with UV mapping. Make sure you only have the one object selected. Also, are the other objects Instances? That's the only way I can imagine that all objects get UV mapped. Try deleting the history (Edit>delete by type>history). I hope that helps!

Great videos! But one question - why don't you use automatic UV:ing?
@AcademicPhoenixPlus
@AcademicPhoenixPlus 5 жыл бұрын
anything automatic comes with some caution. Automatic works great with hard surface and low poly objects. When it comes to more complicated models, it creates so many tiny pieces it takes a long time to sew it together. I rather have the control and UV map with the tools that I know work. I hope that makes sense, Yazan!

whenever I click face to separate the two sides, I lose the move arrows ?? If I chose move tool the faces wont separate and the whole thing moves.
@AcademicPhoenixPlus
@AcademicPhoenixPlus 4 жыл бұрын
Make sure you don't have 'soft select' on. (click b on your keyboard). If it still moves, then there is an edge connected. I would look at your model and see where the seam starts/ends. Team seam should go all the way around, so cut edges if necessary. Hopefully that helps
@gusjones9654
@gusjones9654 4 жыл бұрын
@@AcademicPhoenixPlus simpler than that, I have only been using maya about 10 days and find it frustrating as I always forget to go to object mode after inserting edges, selecting faces etc etc grrr. All I had to do was select a face, then the move tool. There were move arrows initially, but as I said, they disappeared when I clicked on a face, not sure what was selected on the left. . Now when I click on a face, there are the move arrows that I can use, and it never alters when I go back to UV mode so happy days.. Sorry for the odd explanation. Simple, but for a beginner it's a learning curve. PS,.......mastered UV mapping quickly thanks to your tutorial.

I’m sorry to hear you are having challenges. Make sure there is nothing else attached. For example, make sure when you project, only have the faces that you want projected. It won’t work if the whole model is selected. I hope that helps!
