Maya 2018 Beginner: UV Mapping (3/3)

Hi Creators,
Almost every 3D model has been UV Mapped! Understanding how to UV map your models is key to make your 3d assets look realistic.
In the previous tutorials, you learned about the theory of uv mapping, planar projection as well as uv mapping a complicated objects. In this tutorial, we will go over cylindrical, spherical and automatic uv mapping!

Thanks Monica :-).... What I found to layout the UV's to the correct size is I use the "LAYOUT" feature in Maya. It scales the UV's to the correct size according to the 0 -1 grid.

Not sure what's not quite right with my attempt. When I select the top of the cylinder and deselect the bottom (Deselect holding down shift whilst drawing a marquee around the bottom of the cylinder) when I go to the next step and do the UV planar, the resulting UV map has already mapped the bottom and the top of the cylinder. I know this is 'two for the price of one' but I don't understand why both top and bottom have been selected.

I have a cylinder combined with a cube. I started laying out UVs for the cube. But when I hit cylindrical mapping like what you did here, all of my UVs for the cube disappeared. Is this normal? will the UVs for the cube turn up later? How do I remedy this? Thanks.

I want to ask, why does all the UVs have to be in a 0-1 space? Why can't they be on multiple "Grids"? thanks

I always suffer with spherical shapes in UV unwrapping , due to its spherical shape Either I get clean UV islands but on the cost of distorted textures on some areas, or clean maps with less distortion but contains lots of seams borders here & there & here & there ! Lol .. I already rely on Mudbox & Substance Painter for such issues) I know you made that vid as easy starting for beginner, just tell your students to be optimistic for how lucky they are, things lately are easier than before. In Maya 2011 or older softwarws, UV mapping was serious pain in every bad place! O.o

It's good to build strong uvs, but I use mudbox/substance to paint over seams too. And I completely agree! UV mapping is so much easier now. Back in our day... lol! :)

Great tutorial! Got to make sure the uvmap1 is empty. You wouldn’t believe how many times I create a uv map and there’s information in the uvmap1, and my map ends up on a uvmap2. Like, so many times.

Hello Ms. Phoenix, Maya has 3D paint tools to handle problems like crappy seaming. Do you prefer Mudbox because it's superior? I've never used the latter.

Why didn't you use the texel density feature in the uv toolkit to auto scale correctly the cylinder uvs?

Hi JC, that's a good question. The purpose of this video is to be an intro to UV Mapping fundamentals. I usually try to explain the foundations/theory of UV mapping before I start showing off all the tools. I trying to prevent confusion to new students who are trying to grasp UV Mapping for the first time. But yes, Texel Density is a great feature. :)
