BluGuitar - Tone Innovation For Guitarists

BluGuitar - Tone Innovation For Guitarists

On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas and Rich are wondering what it takes - and indeed, if it is possible - to make an affordable guitar sound like a boutique tone monster, and what to look for when trying to score a great budget guitar.
This is something of a passion project for Thomas, as he has been involved with the design of several affordable signature Vintage guitars over the years, all of which are based on his beloved ’61 Strat. Can those guitars approach the performance, the playability and tone of the original? That’s the question the guys will attempt to answer during the show!
There are many factors to consider here. To make affordable guitars, you have to limit costs in certain key areas: the choice of woods and components, the electronics, pickups and hardware, the attention to detail, quality control and the ‘personal touch’ during the build process, and the setup process afterwards.
With affordable guitars, making poor choices during the build process can lead to muffled tones that are not dynamic, and lack sustain. Meanwhile, poor builds and setups can result in tuning stability issues. Thomas will talk about how he has learned to avoid these things over the years, and how he ended up with Vintage sig nature guitars he can be truly proud of!
He’ll also discuss the factors you have to focus on to get what he considers to be the best possible tones out of any guitar at any price: an SRV-esque woodiness with a nice bite for blues, or maybe some other tones which are less demanding on the guitar… and the guitarist!
Finally, we’ll have a few affordable guitars in the studio alongside the usual vintage selection, and Thomas will make his recommendations on what exactly you should be looking for when it comes to purchasing instruments on the cheaper end of the spectrum. We’d also love to hear your thoughts on what you see as being the best affordable guitars out there, so join us in the chat and we’ll talk about as many as we can!

Thank you so much for watching this episode with tons of different guitars from totally different segments of the market. It was fun to compare them all! Enjoy!!! Cheers, Thomas

Great video!! This is why you should play a guitar before you buy one, both amplified and unamplified, with pedals you want to use the guitar with. The action and intonation are extremely important also. "If you are not happy with the guitar, nothing you will do to it will make you like the guitar." Great advice Thomas!! I have a Peavy Reactor that I bought used for $99USD that I like just as much as my 2006 60th Anniversary American Stratocaster and my 1986 G&L ASAT. I played all three guitars before I bought them, and that was after trying multiple guitars of the same brand and price point. After adjusting the action and intonnation, I liked the guitars even more!

27:00 Exact my "problem", Thomas. I cannot count the attempts I try to get familiar with the Ibanez and PRS guitars. Finally I stopped it, because its the same for me: These super perfect guitars are not made for me.Maybe I really have to feel the shortcomings of the 50s constructions to get inspired🤣 And, Thomas, you know how amazing a good Les Paul (with P90 or PAFs) and a Strat sounds with the "good old amp1 Silver edition" 😊 Gruss aus Westfalen, "Papa amp1"😉

Coming through the speakers of my tablet the sounds of the different guitars in the beginning are almost indistinguishable... Maybe that would be different with decent headphones, but I actually think it's mostly the player and the amp that makes the sound what it is. Given the choice I'd always choose a budget guitar with a fine amp than vice versa.

In this episode we can see and hear how rich AMP1 sounds. That makes it easier for me to have fun with almost any guitar. On the other hand I could have chosen a setting that shows more weaknesses of the guitars, but shy? Good amp (and pedal) sounds make you feel great, and that translates into your performance… Greetings, Thomas

" Fight for the note..."

Flasche Bier, " AC/DC - If you want blood..." oder ( später) " Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous [halbton tiefer]" und einfach mal drauflos.....
