Accessory Not Supported | Top 5 Reasons why this happens and how to Fix | haQ attaQ 314

Yeah, Accessory may not be supported, accessory not available, accessory not certified etc. This Apple iOS error pop up comes with varying messages and usually when trying to connect an external USB Device like sound interfaces, USB microphones and MIDI controllers. Why does this happen? What’s going on and how do we avoid and or fix it? I’ve done extensive testing over the past seven years and I’ve narrowed down the causes of this error pop up to five things. I lost my old trusty iPad Air 2 and have been using my 7+ for the last year. I learned a ton and I’m grateful for that but being able to use all my old favorites that were iPad only! So basically I went to Walmart yesterday and I got a charger for like $1:50 it said it was more then it came out to be $1:50 so the first day it was kinda messing up because it’s cheap so then the next day the message pops up and the apple thing was made for Android like it had a I phone price I put on top of the android charger to charge it so I guess you have to buy something made from apple

Hi Jakob, just purchased a USB 3 Camera adapter so I can use my Black Audioquest Dragonfly and I get The accessory requires to much power ! I've plugged the lightning port into charger . is this because its a third party adapter? hope you can answer this before I purchase a apple accessory and it shill won't work. Many Thanks.

I recommend buying the original Apple adapters (for the all the reasons mentioned in this video). Also, I checked the Audioquest website and they recommend using the original Apple Lightning to USB 3 (MK0W2ZM/A) adapter. So if you’re using a third party adapter, then it’s most likely the culprit. However, I do not own a Dragonfly unit myself so I cannot confirm it by testing it myself.

Thank you. Your videos are most helpful. 1 question I have re: powered USB hubs. I bought a 7 port hub but somethings dont seem to like it and prefer to plug directly into my devices. You mentioned you must buy compliant cables, is there a similar thing with the USB powered hubs I should be aware of? Thanks again

Well, there have been reports from users stating that some USB hubs jut won’t work properly no matter what they do. However I’ve only tested a few hubs myself and I haven’t been able to confirm this. Many people seem to prefer the Anker hubs. So the hubs don’t need to be MFi certified. However there’s a wide range of hub types and too many brands making hubs at varying prices. I would recommend staying away from the really cheap ones at least. Other than that, I have too little data to be able to properly speak on the topic. There are just too many to try. I’ll be looking more into it though. It would be nice to be able to recommend particular hubs.

hi Jakob, big fan. I know you (probably) don't own one, but what could be really interesting to us ios musicians, is which devices are now supported by the new ipad pro with usb-c. I mean which new class compliant devices can now be powered (even without a powered hub maybe), that couldn't be powered before by lightning through the usb-adapter.

hi JHo, interesting. Afaik everything that worked on the "old lightning ipads" with their usb3/lightning adapter, should work on the 2018 ipad pro on usb-c . What i'm interested in is the opposite: which bus-powered class compliant audio/midi devices, that on lightning connector didn't work without additional power, DO now work on the ipad 2018 via bus power. To mention one: the focusrite scarlett 2i4 is one of those. On lightning it needed power (through a powered hub, or usb split cable+powerbank, or through the lightning powered app usb3-adapter), but on the ipad pro 2018 it works perfectly by direct connection without any additional power source, which i find great as a "mobile" producer.

I stood on iOS 11.3.1 for a while because of a jailbreak but found out that I couldn't run GarageBand and Bram bos apps unless I updated to 12...so I had to update. At least I'm on 12.1.2 now and jailbroken and I HOPE THEY DONT BREAK those apps when 13 comes out SMH...

does "class compl." mean: that you can not install drivers on an ios device? i mean if it is not you can not use it?

“Class compliant” pretty much means “plug-n-play”. Class compliant devices have all the drivers needed installed on a chip inside the device itself basically. This is why I state in the video that you need external USB gear to be “class compliant” in order to use it with iOS, because on iOS you cannot download drivers like you can on a laptop/desktop system. I hope this clears it up, otherwise ask again! 👍🏼

my “ass-ple” smart keyboard gets this usb device not supported. this happened some time back after an update. i took it in and was told it was defective and i need to get a new keyboard. also they offered a warranty replacement and i was a few months late and they couldn’t make an exception or worst yet to get a newer ipad.

Hello Jakob, do you have problem connecting output of the camera adapter to a DAC using a cable with USB B plug? I can't get it to work. (MicroUSB works) --- arrangement = iPhone -> camera adapter (Lightning in /USB A socket out) -> USB Cable (USB A plug in /USB B plug out) -> DAC

What DAC are you connecting (model and brand)? Is it class compliant? I’ve got Behringer Mixers that connect trough USB A - USB B type cables without problems. It’s should work as long as the DAC is class compliant and there’s sufficient power.

Jakob Haq thanks for your reply. It is a decent Chinese brand GD-audio R2R ladder R11 DAC. It has AC power input so power shouldn’t be an issue.

I’m not familiar with that brand so I don’t have any idea on whether it is class compliant or not. The manufacturers should be able to answer that. Also power can still be an issue even though a USB device is powered with AC. I have an Novation AudioHUB that is AC powered but I still need to use a Lightning to USB3 connector with an Apple charger connected in order to provide sufficient power for the USB connection itself. The AudioHUB requires a certain amount of mA to even start up and an iDevice can most of the time not provide that. Many other USB devices work the same way while others require very little mA. . Now I went back and read your first post and I see that you wrote that “Micro usb works”. Do you mean that you managed to connect the DAC to an iPad with micro usb connector and it works?

I have an iPad Pro 12.9" with Smart Keyboard and Pencil purchased new on Sept 1st 2017. Just recently my Smart Keyboard started not working, with the iPad repeatedly showing the error "This Device is Not Supported". I contacted support, they sent me to an authorized repair shop, they said it wasn't covered by warranty. I next chatted with support online as I was sure I had purchased Apple Care for it, they said there's nothing we can do. I just now chatted with support and showed them the following articles showing that Apple extended the warranty and that mine was still under 3 years old. They said that my purchase date was in 2015!!! I don't know whether that information was entered correctly or intentionally altered, but I set up a call with them tomorrow to change the official date of purchase to avail of this warranty, which I can't find on Apple's website anymore. Fortunately, I have my original box, so I can read my Serial Number. That they printed the serial number on the felt is absurd. I will let you know if they honor the warranty or if I'm going to have to sue Apple. If you encounter this problem with your hardware on iOS that isn’t working anymore after an update, there’s another solution. You can be a beta tester for Apple. It comes with a feedback app where you can submit any issues you come by. Therefore it will be fixed sooner. But please be careful. Don’t install the beta profile on the iOS device you use daily. It’s better to install it on a secondary iOS device if you have one.

i actually managed to hack it so that the adapter instead going into the wall power, goes into my phone. and the USB mic connects to the USB hub. the device is recognised and the correct red light appears in the mic - but no sound on the video. completely blank. so not using the built in mic but not getting audio from ext USB mic either? Any ideas? this issue is driving me nuts!

Today I found out that you can’t chain apple dongles, so I can’t use a camera Adapter and a 3.5mm adaptor at the same time. Is the only other option an expansive audio interface?

Well there is another third party Lightning USB dongle made by Belkin that are meant for that type of stuff. However I’ve never used it myself so you might want to check out some other channels for info on that. Jakob Haq yeah I bought that one, but the lightning port of that dongle doesn’t support adding an other dongle. It is only for charging and syncing. I had this conferred by Belkin. But it still puzzles me why it can sync, but not act as a pass trough for the phones lightning connector. So I guess I’ll stick to using the camera connector and a Bluetooth speaker. And if I want to record and playback use Audiobus and garage band, to record, and then swap the dongle.

Your units will be powered fine but Apple deliberately block it from working. Apple have killed their desktop platform for creative purposes. You can even do it all on Linux now. Reaper and Bitwig work. Now Apple are killing creative users on their ipad. All of my usb powered devices work on all of my Android units. I ditched photography and video editing on Apple a while time ago. You can do that on Linux and many of the high powered 3D programs work on Linux. Apple is on the way out with Tim Cook at the helm. They have become a despicable company.

Android is VERY limited with its apps on the platform. There are only a handful of decent ones you can get on iOS available. I don’t think people are loyal to Apple products per se but if you are a serious music maker, you have a far greater set of options on iOS...
