On February 14, 1989, the crew of Captain Karpenko performed a night flight along the route with an instructor pilot, deputy commander of the 13th aviation bomber division, Colonel Vasily Ivanovich Logunov
On the route, after working at the Kalinovka aviation range (Crimea), at the command of the leader of the group, Karpenko's crew went to climb from 1200 to 10100 m.After the report on the passage of 7000 m, the crew stopped informing the leader about their altitude. At H = 8100 m, the crew discovered a power failure, during the descent, they made 3 attempts to start the auxiliary power unit, finally discharging the battery. The instructor reported to the air traffic control in Simferopol about the failure of the onboard power supply and work on the battery, with a request to ensure landing at the nearest airfield with simple weather.
According to the air defense posts, the aircraft began a vigorous descent along a steep trajectory, after which the mark disappeared on the radar screen. The crew could not use the standard rescue equipment and died in a collision with the ground. The plane fell 36 km north of the city of Mariupol (at that time Zhdanov) in the Donetsk region near the village of Novoalekseevka.
The crew silently, fighting overloads, inexorably approached the ground along a steep trajectory at speeds over 1M. The last words of the instructor "It's okay." At 20:57 the plane hit the ground.
Until the landing of the group, no one knew that Captain Karpenko's plane was not in battle formation. On the approach scheme, the "loss" was detected by the far-field RP. The flight control authorities did not know that a catastrophic situation had occurred in the crew.
What then became the cause of the plane crash, you will learn from this video.
