To be fair, if Candy Crush is someone's jam and they truly enjoy the challenge of using strategy to beat the levels to the point that they play it consistently, I'm not gonna judge; I've got some very "Candy Crush"-like puzzle games in my Steam library that scratch that puzzle itch. But if it's just something they do while taking a dump or because they're bored on a bus, no, they're no more a gamer than the guy who plays Solitaire at work is a card shark.
@Dracopol6 жыл бұрын
Dargonhuman Naaaah, if you haven't taken six hours to set up your character on a computer RPG to balance damage factor with weapon speed factor, if you're not there to cut the enemy's head off and shit down their necks, you're not a gamer. Go back to Hello Kitty Massive Multiplayer Online.
@Kynareth66 жыл бұрын
And Candy Crush (or other casual smartphone games) is often pre-installed. Some middle-aged women may very well try it out once or twice, being automatically counted as "gamers". Hilariously bad statistics making.
@DrakeSilmore6 жыл бұрын
If we count mobile gamers as gamers, we should no longer generalise and specify which demographic they belong to. Adjusting AAA game titles on the demographic of everyone who ever touched a game regardless of platform is making AAA titles very, very bad. But luckily we now have C&C Rivals because of that.
@Kynareth66 жыл бұрын
Honestly I feel like during PS2 era, most games were actually targeted at real gamers while now most games are targeted at casuals. I am gradually moving more and more to indie titles as AA/AAA are often disappointing and money grabbing. Not all of them but many. There are still some OK large companies, like CD Projekt Red or Rockstar Games. Stay away from EA Games though.

As to women being buried with weapons in the Viking age: This was an era in which everyone owned weapons, in a culture that exchanged swords between bride and groom at weddings. (Yes, look it up). Mere presence or weapons in a viking age grave, whether male or female basically says nothing.

That argument cuts two ways. Being buried with weapons/armor/shields/etc is usually enough evidence for archaeologists to conclude that a grave occupant was a male...in fact that was the *only* reason the occupant of that grave was believed to be male in the 1880s. So...it they in fact did assume one's lifestyle (based on one's grave goods) determined one's gender. In fact, it probably is correlated with it. In the same way, subject only to the margin of error on the DNA tests and extremely rare cases of intersex births, sex chromosomes are conclusive evidence of biological sex. Then, biological sex is correlated with the gender performance most people evince in life (even if it is not 100%).
@swordmage5 жыл бұрын
@@Tom-sd2vi I think there is a useful reason to define "sex" and "gender" differently, as making them synonyms (especially without noting that you're doing so given that people clearly do not always use them to mean the same thing) simply makes it harder to discuss the difference between the characteristics that are determined and hard-wired by the sex chromosomes, those that are influenced by various other factors like differences in fetal development in the womb due to hormonal and epigenetic factors, and those that are culturally derived. The difference between the three is not always clear as we have a limited understanding of the which characteristics fall into which category. That is a semantic point, but if the point is clarity of the discussion and not just "scoring points" then clarity is important. It is clear beyond all doubt that some traits we ascribe as "masculine" today must be cultural. For example, in the Middle Ages, it was well understood that women could not control their sexual impulses and therefore men (being "more reasonable") had to fight them off when they got sexually aggressive. That changed entirely and the story later became that men had the poor impulse control. Sometimes being competitive or having an interest in "rough play" is ascribed as being a "male" trait, but studies have shown that hormone exposure in utero plays a big part in instilling those traits in boys (without being entirely determinitive), and that in many cases girls who are exposed to larger than average doses of androgens in utero (and boys exposed to fewer androgens) flip the stereotype. Calling "mentally ill" is also merely a semantic game, I think. If a person could be capable of leading a typicaly productive and happy life without imposing any cost on others while believing a thing about themselves, calling that belief an "illness" is strange. (I am not counting the adverse reactions others have to, or mental anguish others feel upon, learning of the belief, as "minding one's own business" would cure them of that) We used to make life difficult for left-handed people (treating it like it was a disability to be overcome), we used to burn people alive for believing the "wrong" religion, we learned that was stupid of us, and we adapted accordingly. I imagine we could call people of other religions "mentally ill" (some of them believe in one or more invisible people who live in the sky watching everything all the time...that sounds kinda nuts), but I don't see it as productive, even if I happen to be shocked at their beliefs myself. As long as, again, they are not hurting anyone else, we have learned that we should live and let live.

To be fair there isn't much difference between WoW and Candy Crush. They are both casual games that require mostly time or money, repetitive, and keep you going with a sense of achievement without much effort. Also, point out most female gamers on PC play games like WoW, LoL, or TellTale games. All those games tend to have management or reaction time watered down compared to similar games in the genre or are slowly paced(or just not games in the case of TellTale).

Surprisingly enough yes, that's actually it, they've been trying to construct this narrative for a while now, I recall seeing articles 3-4 years ago, saying that women were making up nearly 50% of "gamers". What they might have wanted to point out in the articles themselves (and not buried under 50 hyperlinks to other articles still thrice removed from the actual study and data) was that this included stuff like people playing Candy Crush on their phones and people playing clickers on Facebook.

They went as far as saying "nobody looks like this model we have a picture of right in front of your face." NOBODY?! NNOOOBODDY?! Then they proceeded to point out all the flaws with the model for no reason, I guess they were "body shaming," her to show us ignorant men that only fat women can be sexy because they are flawless. I honeslty could not figure out how the insults helped their point towards positive "body image," and i doubt I ever will. KOO KOO libs cant go five minutes without breaking their own damn rules. And there's such thing as being predisposed to not being able to healthily achieve a good-looking body as well. And then there's just people who don't care about it enough to actually work for it. But saying someone's good looks aren't "real" is just hilarious to me
@nuderedfinger7 жыл бұрын
That said, I definitely don't have as good of a body as I could have, but that's because I don't work out enough, because I'm very busy and have other priorities, just like anybody else who's hustling these days. But luckily having someone who loves and understands you, usually should mean they're attracted to your soul and beliefs and actions, not the end result of what your physical body looks like, although that is a factor (and is a representation of your choices, very often).

You guys all fail at history. Brunhilde probably did not exist, and was loosely based on a different historical figure. The actress that portrays Lagertha is very attractive, Lagertha's actual attractiveness is relatively unknowable. Viking Shield Maidens did exist, though they certainly were not common. Lagaerthe very likely did exist as she actually appears in real historical records. Lagaertha was in actuality a bad ass, and with the character of Brunhilde, became the archetype for almost all other Shield Maidens and Woman Warriors in modern times. The show Vikings that you use for your reference, is bullshit, yes, but not entirely. The major historical points are mostly true (She did divorce Ragnar, remarry a noble, who died, took over his House, and later rescued Ragnar with her army, for instance). At that time, as a house leader, she likely wasn't riding in to the forefront of battle though, if she was even actually present, however. All the homelife stuff and political drama & intrigue is most likely all bullshit with the many, many unverifiable assumptions it makes. That's how "Based on XXXX" Hollywood stories work though. Maybe do a more in-depth study before letting people erroneously and lazily influence your bias.

Viking warlord woman is absurd, let alone viking, vikings weren't just warriors, they were the strongest, even the byzantine empire recruited them to be their elite force, and bodyguards of an emperor himself, they were called varangian guards.

Science sure can predict who is ugly.

Yeah, nobody can tell you you're wrong about what you're into. Everybody has their own preferred bodies, though there is a general type of body a lot of men agree is attractive. I'm guessing short, small waist, curvy hips are a common interest but I'm not a guy.
@DrewLSsix6 жыл бұрын
No, and no scientist would suggest that. It can Attempt to explain WHY you are attracted to something.

Yes Hello I am Snek As a guy I can confirm that yes most men prefer women slightly shorter than themselves with small waists and curvy hips. It's a generally accepted measuring stick of attractiveness. There are outliers though. I tend to prefer women as tall if not taller than myself as well as being well built. I never really got the appeal of shorter women myself. Especially slender and short women.

@StunBuns6 жыл бұрын
Maybe not a "perfect" body type, but there's *definitely* an objective spectrum of desirability. There's a reason ugly, frumpy chicks aren't demanded in porn, porn of course being that thing that almost the entire world of men contribute their "vote" on what kind of women they prefer.
@ViolentKisses876 жыл бұрын
Sure but peoples likes same as everything else can be mapped on a bell curve and 45* just so happens to be most peoples preference.

Luminen Kettu We didn't ever used to like fat women though. That's a myth that can be easily debunked by looking at the right paintings and a little historical knowledge derived from somewhere that isn't buzzfeed. Botticelli's The Birth of Venus, for example, represents the most beautiful concievable woman according to the people of the Italian Renaissance.
@sophiacristina6 жыл бұрын
I agree in parts, but the idea here is that people use those ideas of "perfect body" because fat shaming, but if someone don't want to be fat shamed they shouldn't use nonfactual science. The idea is that they use those science for ideologies and probably pushed it to Lauren, but when Lauren checked the science behind their ideology is funny that the research says otherwise.
