Everything there is to know about match conditioning an AR for the best accuracy was learned by the USAMU back in 1994 when they replaced the M14 with the M16A2 in US Service Rifle Competition. Essentially, a 2 stage trigger, free floating match grade barrel, conversion of as issued sights to 1/4 MOA value, adjustable front sight base, and small aperture in rear sight. Now, back in early 2000’s I was a CMP-USAMU Military Rifle Instructor assisting the USAMU deliver SDM Training. My credentials for that work was US Distinguished Rifleman and American High Power Rifleman in Long-Range Award. So, after watching this video my highly qualified opinion is I think the authors are spot on about the whole matter, mostly don’t expect great results from a match conditioned rifle and match grade ammunition without having had some marksmanship training. The rub about that is who to go to for training? I’d say sign up for the USAMU’s Small Arms Firing School. It’s a 3 day annual event at CamPerry where Champion Military Shooters teach civilians how to shoot in Service Rifle Competition.

Recce Carbines: Recce carbines came from JSOC well before the M4 program was fielded. Guys on the Sniper Operations/Recce Teams spent a lot of time focusing on providing precision supporting fires for the Assaulters. These were all Sniper-trained guys who had been through SOTIC, SEAL Sniper School for NSW, and/or Quantico Scout Sniper Instructor Course who wanted accurate little Carbines, not run-of-the mill blasters with 4 MOA dispersion. These were used in addition to M21s and SR25s, which also had a lot of work done to them by Unit Armorers. In the late 1980s-early 1990s, JSOC elements in both the Army and Navy had their Unit Armorers accurize their Colt 723 and 727 Carbines with free-float tubes, Douglas or Lilja barrels, and topped with various optics ranging from Aimpoint 2000s to Hensoldts and Leupold LPVOs from the 1980s. The optic mounts were usually ARMS #2 or a featureless bit of rail that dropped into the carry handle slot. Others had the front portion of the carry handle machined off and a Weaver rail installed for the Aimpoint to be mounted lower and co-witness with the irons. Aimpoints were used a lot for rotary wing sniper support, where snipers remained in MH-60s providing overwatch for Assaulters, whereas the early LPVOs were used for more precise Sniper support. There was no specific standard for JSOC Recce carbines, and they all varied by Team and Squadron, who were all competing with each other to develop better solutions. They also mounted Own the Night configuration IR lasers on free-floated handguards to provide IR laser targeting, which worked both for helos and dismounted. Handguards were either 12” V-MATCH knurled aluminum or fiberglass with stainless threaded inserts for accessories. They were often front sight pocket cut for the FSB. PAQ-4Cs and early Wilcox LAMs were used well before the PEQ-2A came out. These carbines were often suppressed. Ammunition was 68gr or 69gr Match, in addition to M855. When the M4A1 started fielding in 1993-1994, the Recce configuration guns used some of the older accessories and features with the new flat-top railed uppers, and eventually new free-float handguard options were primarily sourced from KAC. One was the MRE to replace the modified tubular free float handguards used before, which solved the problem of the FSB pocket cut installation while still retaining the front iron sight. The other KAC quad rail eliminated the FSB and used a low profile gas block. There are all sorts of variations of Recce carbines in the post-M4A1 era. The Schmidt & Bender Short Dot LPVO was a Unit-specific request that became very popular in the 2000s, replacing a lot of the older 1980s-era LPVOs. SPR: Other soldiers who were in SOCOM occasionally saw JSOC guys with these carbines, and wanted a similar capability for the DM role within SF ODAs and SEAL Platoons. NSW Crane and USAMU answered that requirement with the Mk.12 Special Purpose Rifle using old stock M16A1 lower receiver groups, mated with 2-stage match triggers from different companies, M4 uppers, Douglas 18” RLGS select match barrels, the PRI flip-up front sight/gas block, SPR CF handguard, ARMS Swan sleeve rails, and suppressors. Ammunition developed with help from USAMU and others was 77gr SMK Mk.262. Optics ranged from Leupold 3-9x to MR/Ts, then later NightForce. Mk.12 Mod 1 had the Knights Armament free-float rail and M4 upper, KAC trigger, suppressor. SAM-R and SDM-R: DMRs included the SAM-R and SDM-R 20” rifles, meant for issue to USMC and US Army Infantry units. With a DMR, it makes sense to keep the chambering and mags the same as the rest of the Squad if you can, so the DM can fight like the rest of the element, while providing additional SA with his magnified optic, and more precise fires to extended distances. While many 7.62x51 DMRs have been issued, they are not a rule.

It's going to get more confusing for people since the M27 and M110A1 are both DMR's in use but are two very different weapons. To really understand the naming conventions it's much easier to look at the roles that have used them. I have shot almost everything the military has to offer from the M9 to the SASR and they all have their use case. I'm mostly excited about 6 ARC because it's a cartridge that covers most of those use cases very well.

I saw a 17.7” Ballistic Advantage .223 Wylde barrel on sale, so I bought it and paired it with an Aero upper and lower. Just took it out 2 days ago to do some load testing at 100 yards. Shot some Hornaday 73 grain ELD Match with CFE223, and it surprised the hell out of me. I had to seat them a lot deeper than I would like with that bullet, but the mags for an AR restrict what you can do. Best 5 shot group was around 3/4”. @kirkmartin2223 Жыл бұрын
Not trying to be a smarta$$ but....try it! Lap the upper and whatnot then try lapping the barrel nut. See if your accuracy improves. A high quality barrel will come pretty dang true to bore. I don't see how lapping the barrel nut to the muzzle side of the extension shoulder will help but it probably won't hurt.
@SGCXD Жыл бұрын
@@kirkmartin2223 I hear ya but as I thought about it more, I wonder even how you’d do it without a lathe or if the juice is worth the squeeze. @LRRPFco52 Жыл бұрын
It does matter to have equal and square mate-up of these critical components. Receivers and barrel extensions are machined square, but the anodizing on the upper receivers can dry non-uniformly by the anodizer, which will cock the barrel to one side even when you torque the nut down. If the inner face of the barrel nut is square, the flange is square, the threads are true with each other, and the receiver face is square, it will support a far more precise system with tight shot-to-shot consistency.
@whiskerbiscuit99 Жыл бұрын
I can promise you right now lapping the face of the upper reciever makes a huge diff. Ive had to shelf guns brought to me with cycling issues, one of them actually looked like the barrel was bent. Well known high end brand name shelf gun too, worst reciever face ive seen. All need a little, this was real bad. Mfgr requested photos and immediately sent out a new one. Did a little digging on the issue, high on low right side of the face, is due to the recievers relaxing some time after machining etc. Primarily in forged recievers, billet doesnt tend to do it.
@LRRPFco52 Жыл бұрын
@@whiskerbiscuit99 The faces are machined square and true, but anodizing dries unevenly sometimes. I had this conversation with JP face-to-face back in 2016, and he said from a manufacturing perspective, there are variances that have to be controlled with anodizing. Square faces also help significantly with bolt life and mechanical zero with sights and optics.

So i agree with everything you said. As another example, on my Daniel Defense AR-15, I took the original 16" govt profile barrel off and installed a 20" stainless heavy profile fluted Wilson Combat barrel, major improvement! That and a Triggertech adjustable (dialed all the way down), with an adjustable gas block, and H3 buffer, the gun is a sub-moa rifle now. The two factory loads that run good through it are frontier 75 grain and Hornaday Black 77 grain. Need to order some of your .223 ammo, for testing, to see how it does on hand loads. My other accurate AR is my Sgt of Arms 6mm ARC. I'm going to switch the Geissele to a Triggertech on that gun, because I am just such a huge fan of the Triggertech. I will say though their T-box barrels are really tight chamber tolerance and will be picky going from lot to lot on Hornady black. The match and precision hunter run superbly through that gun though. Point is, good optics, with good mounts, a well built rifle with quality products, and good ammo will get you there. If you go all in from the get go, then you'll have more time to develop good shooting habits and get training, to be a better shooter. Also get some good shooting bags and bipod/tripod, to practice shooting from different positions. Do this so your capable of shooting from any angle, when you're out hunting. I've been on situations where i saw something on a game camera, but couldn't get to the blind, so i had to make an extended shot, in the prone, or off a tripod, to take an animal.

Just one more thing: the USAMU Squad Designated Marksman Course begins with this fact: the bullet ALWAYS goes in the direction the barrel is pointed. With some thought on this students will realize for the bullet to hit where desired requires knowledge for where the barrel is pointed, so before any match conditioning first learn how to get consistent sight alignment and maintain it via smooth trigger control until the bullet clears the bore. BTW, the barrel is indeed the most important thing but over the counter barrels do not satisfy the desire. To be assured of best accuracy get a barrel that satisfies the USAMU Service Rifle Section.

SPRs are typically gonna have (16"/18") stainless barrels and are designed around precision rounds on target. Think MPVO. Recce builds can be anything (typical barrel length might be as low as 12.5" - but usually 14.5"-18" with a magnified optic capable of watching and PID.) But the barrels and accessories are less restricted/specific. Think LPVO. Generally, if you're doing recon, you are not trying to fight/engage targets. But you want that capability. DMRs, as the name states, marksman. That's the squad sniper.

On Mountain hundreds, if not, thousands of rifle rings and depending on the brand and depending on the manufacturer, you really get what you pay for but I’ve also seen $100 rings be out of alignment. Had brand new rings made by manufactures that a lot of people trust and swear be so out of the line that I couldn’t even bite and scope for 25 yards because it was putting so much pressure on the scope and internal components that max out the scope.

By the way, the difference between an SPR/DMR and a recce rifle is weight. Recce rifles are carried a lot and shot a little, and the general pack weight for a reconnaissance mission is significantly higher than it would be for a generic combat patrol because of time, specialized equipment, and the need to be self sufficient.

Goin back and watchin this again. Ive got an arguement though. Lapping the upper reciever.... ive got first hand experience with upper recievers not being true on the face, as compared to the upper reciever bore. Ill be open in saying ive seen very few recievers actually 100% true on the face. Most, regardless of brand coud benefit from lapping, a couple of the worst i have seen are from very well known AR manufacturers..... like bad, one of those examples had serious cycling problems. Goimg back to the idea of lapping... if the receiver face is not square with the bore of the reciever, then (assuming the barrel extention is 100% true) the barrel will not be square to the bore/or bcg right? Again ive seen first hand serious issues from this. Theres another factor too, thermal fit recievers vs recievers that will slide right in, thermal fit being preffered. But again ive seen even the most well known name recievers vary on fit to barrel extension.. its a combo thing Regardless i will attest that theres benefit to lapping the upper regardless of brand. Every ar i touch gets the upper lapped period. At this point i can say only a couple showed actually true when i started checking them w the tool. I want my barrel, square with the reciever bore, or anyone elses that i touch. Is there a giant gain in acvuracy? If its bad enough out then yes, not to mention reliability. That lapping tool was literally one of the first tools i bought when i got into the platform.

I would sooner take my f-class championship hand loaded ammo Even if it meant I had to shoot just the barreled action with no stock. As far as suppressors go there's no way I would put one on a gun that I built for precision work only... Of course it would be detrimental to your accuracy. When has hanging a pound off the end of your barrel ever increased accuracy in a gun? Unless by some queer chance you perfected the harmonics in the barrel somehow by adding it of course it's not going to help! If you insist that a suppressor has never made a gun shoot worse, maybe you could give me some examples of some of the names of guys who use them in the PRS series or maybe bench rest or f class? Fucking suppressor get outta here! New shooters this is why it's important to get as many opinions as you can on a topic such as precision shooting. After you get enough of them (opinions) the bullshit will separate itself from the useful information.

It's out of hand now. Seems like our rifles now have pronouns and the zealots that get triggered by misgendering their rifle are unhinged!

Really? Funny that an "influencer" is having influence?
