There are different shades of black, just like how there are different shade of white, but it’s very subtle. So subtle that if you just look at a pigment of black alone, you would just see black, but if you put it next to another pigment of black, you will start to see the color difference. But still different enough for artists to make money out of it (by just getting different pigments of black on a painting). Ever heard of “White on White”, a painting that’s worth $20.6 Million even though it’s literally a “blank” white canvas? It’s exactly like that. You can see the differences of the white paints in the canvas, but if the pigments were alone, it’d look like normal white.

it all depends on how you define black, right? If there is only one shade of black, then it would be the absolute absence of light. As in, no light would be reflected off the object. Therefore black could only truly be seen if youre looking at a black hole. Everything that we call black is also a really dark gray, the cutoff between black and not black is arbitrary. Therefore by any common usage, there Are multiple shades of black.

People are commenting about how from an artist's perspective there's different kinds of black, but that's also true from a linguistic perspective. The vast majority of people call a number of different colors "black," even if those colors are actually really dark gray, because what matters in communication isn't inherent or objective reality, it's a common/shared perception of existing reality

I've actually had this argument before: sometimes it matters what is literally the case, but other times it matters what the contextual meaning is. Like in storytelling; even if you have a completely unique description and lore for what a "demon" is or what an "angel" is, using those names already short-hand implants a perception of what these creatures might be in the world you're creating.

Technically those are all shades of gray (or another dark color). True black is the absence of light, if a substance reflects light, then it’s not truly black. If something is truly black, you wouldn’t be able to see it, only it’s impact on the world around it
