I remember lying in bed in the dark listening to the Friday Night Rock Show on Radio One when Tommy Vance played the new single off the Painkiller album. It was Night Crawler and it blew me away. It was September 1990 and I had just worked all summer stacking shelves and spent every penny I'd earned on a CD player, so my brother had to buy the CD. It was the first one we ever owned. I remember having family parties with 10+ people all rocking out playing air guitar to the Painkiller solo! Wonderful times. Priest probably have the most diverse catalogue of any metal band. Victim of Changes is a riff fest, but I just love Blood Red Skies. I feel like I could conquer the world after listening to that song. Oh, and I love the applied theory lessons! I should really try harder with my sweep picking. Thanks so much.

In the era of sweep picking, the trick was to avoid bar chord fingering to make it clean....BUT, Glenn Tipton actual embraced and perfected his bar chord sweeping (i.e The Sentinel, Locked In, Pain Killer). Thats what makes his sweeps different from the crowd at the time.

Check out Joe Satriani's Mind Storm song. It has a ton of elements from Painkiller but slowed down a bit. There is even a sweep picking part about 2 minutes into the song. I first realized this when I heard a Painkiller tutorial that was slowed down for practice and thought, "wow that's Mind Storm."

I think the best thing about it is that it's right on the edge of being clean: it's "almost" sloppy, but it's clean enough that it doesn't sound like modern Kirk Hammett sloppy, if that makes sense? It sets the tone for the rest of the solo, where it feels like it's riding right on the edge.

Was nice to come across this ... I remember when I first came across this track as a kid and today it sounds as good as it did the first time every time I heard it. As a budding guitarist, I HAD to know how the hell he executed that opening, and yes, it is the best opening to a guitar solo there's ever been in Metal. It then continues beautifully, perfectly phrased in every part .. that wonderful kinda chromatic/bluesy climb to THAT legato part ... it just takes the piss ha ha I must say though, I think KK Downing comes in after that section and I am not particularly keen on that part of the solo, but either way .. doesn't change the fact that this is the most complete metal song ever IMO, and weirdly at same time, I would never have considered myself a Priest fan really. I am often staggered at how many people disagree with me over this track, though, particularly musicians. But anyway, Glen Tipton one of my heroes just for this moment alone Think many folk just take is as over-the-top Spandex instrument gymnastics, but so what! ... it's so much more than that. Priests' new album, I must mention it. What an effort. I was genuinely impressed.. don't listen to metal as much these days but always go back to the old classics once in a while and it was nice to hear them still releasing and playing inspired. My hero growing up was DImbag Darrell, I think he was the best player in the genre overall, that man played with fuckin' soul and it is tragic he was takn from us in such a cruel way too soon. But that track, I agree with you completely that this has always been the perfect example for METAL 🤣 Played a bit of guitar myself in the past and had classes with likes of Paul Gilbert and such guys once before, so always come back to my old faves on a nostalgia trip, and was nice to see someone break this down so well. Wish I could have watched something like this when I was 12 and trying to figure out what the hell he was doing on my Rhodes Jackson V really got an itch to pick a guitar up now ha ha

This is another one I'm late to the party on listening to. With limited exposure to Judas Priest, I'm going to say Breaking the Law because it's one of the first few songs I could play along to the intro. Yes I like music theory, the more I learn, the more I want to learn 🤘🎵🎸 There is heaps of KZbin content on technique, but not that much that helps you learn what to do with it.

I was a very late comer to Priest! I had a lot of catching up to do!
@JD-vj4go2 жыл бұрын
You got way closer to figuring it out than i did lol. When I figured it out I played 3 note per string sweeps. Fm 1st inversion, Fm 2nd inversion, D 1st inversion. I was so far off and I played it that way for months until I saw Priest live on the Painkiller tour and thought 'uh oh' (in my defense, I don't think anyone ever noticed and I am a tone deaf moron). The Sentinel is my favorite Priest tune. Defenders of the Faith was my first and will always be my favorite Priest album. Awesome lesson. I like the music theory stuff. Please do Alex Skolnick's intro solo to Trial by Fire. I shudder to think how far off I was on that one :D

Everyone plays this solo differently. I tried to learn it note for note like on the record so I slowed it down and tried to pick out every note. It's actually hard to hear it because the tone has a lot of chorus and reverb on it. It's hard to distinguish individual notes, especially at that speed and with the effects on the guitar tone. Even when it's slowed down. I had to settle for close enough.

Wow! So much going on in that intro pattern alone. Glenn Tipton is a true guitar god. From a technique and theory standpoint he's up there with the likes of Randy Rhoads and EVH. He seems to be flying under the radar of a lot of people tough, sadly. Pretty low down in many top guitarists lists if included at all. Maybe that's just because the people who are in the business of ranking guitarists only know one or two Priest songs?

02:00 wasn't Richie Faulkner the replacement for KK Downing? Would have though Andy Sneap now fills in for Glenn Tipton 🤔
@perroborrego15 күн бұрын
That's the magic of Tipton's hands. The notes are correct but he has a blurry way of playing them that is impossible to replicate. Playing the solo in a Ritchie Faulkner or Paul Gilbert way does not make the cut. Check the intro of "Heavy Metal", you can tab the notes but you can't sound the way he does.

True, but now Faulkner takes the Tipton leads once Tipton stepped aside. No way in hell Sneap could replace Tipton. I mean, no one came, but Faulkner is a beast. Who else can have their heart explode on stage, I think during Painkiller, and complete the song?

Am I forced to choose just one Judas Priest song as my favorite? So I choose "One Shot at Glory" (obviously combined with the intro "Battle Hymn"); in my opinion, it is a song that represents very well all the extraordinary qualities of Judas Priest: great atmospheres, powerful melodies, superlative vocals, granite rhythmic guitars, solos that take no prisoners, and lots and lots of positive energy!
