I always hear this argument of "if it bothers someone, get rid of it", but that logic doesn't really make sense. What if getting rid of it also bothers people (it will!)? Then who do you listen to? Why is there a constant need to change things that aren't a big deal to most people? There has to be some line in the sand where you say "I understand this bothers you, but you're going to have to deal with it". Being bothered is usually more of a reflection on the person with the issue than the thing they think is an issue.

National anthem before games was lobbied by veterans and was put officially in place in the 1930s. It was played during world War 1 and 2 for patriotism and became pretty much popular during world War 2. It is up to the league to determine if they want to remove it. It is up to the consumer on how they feel about it and whether they chose to tune in to watch their product.

Forced patriotism isn't about remembering the freedoms and privileges because of past military people who died. It's the same cult of personality that a long list of other countries have that use indoctrination under the guise of patriotism. If the anthem is required, then that leaves it fairly and justly open to be used for the purpose of pointing out the hypocrisies of all the reasons people give for why the anthem should be played for a nonpolitical, non-international event. If it really needed to be played because of remembering past military soldiers, then there would have never been any confederate flags flying anywhere during sporting events or nonsporting events. And there would have never been any state flags that purposely adopted a design with elements and derivatives of the confederate flag. The anthem is played at sporting events because the military lobbied for it for propaganda and indoctrination purposes. And it's been done for so long that it's now part of the ceremony of starting a sporting event. Like dimming the lights before a concert.

I'm not American so my opinion is irrelevant. However, I don't understand the strong feeling about there being an anthem played before every sporting event; we don't in the UK. If it's for the sake of continuing an established tradition then why are there so many individualised emotional opinions on its persistence? If it's for an established, codified reason(s) (eg. National pride) then why have those reasons not been addressed nationally by the White House administration. There is doubt among historians as to whether the lyrics of the notorious, regularly unsung and ignored, third verse refer to slaves in a derisory fashion that applies to mercenary soldiers within the enemy ranks or whether it addresses slaves as those adopted by the enemy that now fight against their oppressors. While that doubt exists and the division is left unaddressed, opinions and emotions attached to the National Anthem will diverge and separate. Not very uniting.
