Hi Josie, great to hear from you and there must be a really good reason why your family is wanting you to play guitar... (answer, they know you have talent) !! I'm glad you found my channel and am happy to help! Do you have the study guide with these lessons? Ask your parents first please, but there is a free study guide that has more videos than what's on KZbin. In lesson 1, I tell everyone how to get it, and just have someone from your family to help out. All the best and happy pickin' !!! bob btw, I started playing guitar at age 7, and I play guitar for a full time living as a studio musician. My teaching here is a sideline but I love to help people!!!

looking forward to learning this system! i play southern gospel and old hymns in a strumming style now, but I know doing some rhythmic picking would really add to it!
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons8 жыл бұрын
Hey Wendon, great to have you here and I too am into southern gospel with a bluegrass twist. This style I'm showing here fits perfect into what you are doing (any 4/4 song) and is very similar to "travis style" picking or what Chet Atkins did (only on acoustic without muting the bass strings). Looking forward to hearing back from you with your progress, and big thanks for taking the lessons!! bob
I'm actually very comfortable making the more traditional Em chord with two fingers. If I want to make that version of the Em would I just keep the same finger picking sequence, on the same strings you introduce in video number one? Which, by the way, I am enjoying how you teach. It just so happens I already know one way to make the Em.
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons5 жыл бұрын
Hey Steve, great to hear from you and yes, if you want to play the standard 2 fingered Em- by all means. I think that we are not plucking the one open string anyway so, it doesn't change the sound or anything. And in the next course which I hope you will take, we do the Em chord only we still don't pluck that 5th string- as my thinking was to get everyone acclimated with that chord anyway. Thanks Steve, hope you are having some fun with this and happy pickin' !! bob

I have just found your lessons and have enjoyed them. I notice you don’t have the guitar resting on your left leg like you suggest in the very first video
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons11 ай бұрын
Hey Kent, thanks for taking the lessons with me and glad you are enjoying them. I wish I could take credit for the rules of body positioning but that is the standard prescribed classical approach. I've found it extremely useful for beginners who just can't stretch or have trouble arching and playing on their fingertips. But if you are getting clean chords and not having problems with chords like a C , F or Barre chords, then I would stay with what works best for you and what is comfortable. I had a student that was having the hardest time making chords, and after working with him 1 on 1, we both realized that the classical approach was making it more difficult for him (due to his body shape). We changed around a few things and he was finally able to play the chords and be comfortable. So I guess what I'm saying is, one size doesn't necessarily fit all people. If you are still having troubles with the chords, let me know. And to answer your question, if I could start over again doing things by the book... I would. I still have tech issues that I wish I had corrected way back when. Wishing you a great guitar year 2024!!! bob

Hi Lindsay! Thank you soooo much for the kind words and GLAD you are here!! It sounds to me like you are doing well with this. and,,, very happy that you will be taking your time as it's all about repetition and training your hands (I'm still doing that). Regarding other "how to" videos... kind of a sore point for me as well. Whether it's assembling a grill or fixing something, seems many will leave out a key detail at the beginning (like I know what they are talking about) and that is so frustrating. So I do pay a lot of attention in the lessons to not do that (yes, I'm OCD...😀 I just recently put this 1st course up on my fingerpickingwithbob.com site (new site) The course is now easier to navigate and also has study guide material and more lessons that are not on youtube. Hi iamSydneyÉlese, great to hear from you and thank you for taking the lessons with me! The course used to come with a study guide PDF but is now been moved to my new website Fingerpickingwithbob.com (hope that is the website you are talking about). If so, the course is now updated in modular form with the study guide material right underneath each video. I also have included the sheet music download in one of the modules which comes after we learn how to read tab. So if you can follow along with this course, it is perfect if you've never played guitar before as I cover everything. So if you go to the site, you will see in the left hand sidebar in your members area "Play Your First Fingerstyle Song"... just click on that and it will take you to the course. Also if you need help, you can also go into the coaching area and write to me there. Wishing you a great 2024 on your guitar!! bob

I figured out what was mixing me up. When you count 1 2 3 & 4 the numbers don't correspond to the string numbers. For this old strummer who put her guitar down for 4 years I'm not surprised it's harder to catch on than it should be plus no calluses. Not giving up just need to commit to practice. I like your lessons.
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons Жыл бұрын
Hi E N, yes, the counting is what you would typically hear musicians and conductors do during a song when practicing. In the study guide I have flow charts that not only tell you what strings to pluck, but also what fingers to use. The free study guide has all this information plus more videos that are not on KZbin. I'd be happy to send it to you- just email me at acousticguitarvideos@gmail.com . Thanks E N, wishing you a happy day! bob

when i try to play chords while finger picking, the strings i’m picking don’t make a noise. Ive noticed its not just for this video, but for all chords i try and play and pick at the same time. Any advice? Ive already watched your video about the 8 tips to get chords to play clearer, but no luck so far. For example, if i hold down the E string with my left hand, and then try to pick the same string with my right hand, it won’t make any sound, even if i’m close to the metal fret strip.
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jade, thanks for writing to me and hope all is well. Let's see if we can get your guitar playing "well" too. So let's back up a little- did you get the study guide with this? Let me know and I can send it to you via e mail. My e mail address is acousticguitarvideos@gmail.com . At this point if the 8 tips didn't work much, I'm starting to wonder what's up? Many times students will send photos or even make a video for me to see. Usually I will know instantly what's wrong. I guess e mail me either way.. It also might be your guitar? Anyway, I'm going to do my best to help. bob

I’m having some difficulty with my placement of the thumb, when I place it straight on the back of the neck and arch my fingers they get really sore. I think I need to build up the strength in my hands somehow
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons6 жыл бұрын
Hey Richard, the arching is important but from what I could see, it looks like you are already doing that pretty good. But chords like C, and F, and then chords that you have to stretch your fingers, the thumb in the right place is key. Also tilting the guitar neck upwards is important too. This will also help your right hand with striking the strings at the right angle (for better tone). Try to relax your hand.. can't play well if you are all tensed up and grabbing the guitar like a vice grip. Some chords just need more pressure than others. Save your strength for that. It's like a car race, take the curves slow, and floor it on the strait aways ...

Help!! Bob may I ask your method for changing strings? I have checked scrolled youtube and there are so many different ways - is there a preferred method or not?
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons5 жыл бұрын
Hi Marie, you hit a topic that I haven't addresses successfully yet (filming the video part). mainly because it was hard to see and I need a camera man to do close ups showing me doing it. There are many ways to change strings and so many variations. And yes, there is one way to do it that is better than the others where a knot is formed which locks the string in and they don't slip out of tune that much (but they still go out of tune and need tuning every day or when you pick up your guitar). To describe this would be impossible so I'm going to look around and recommend a video that I think is good and send you the link... Give me a moment.....!!
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons5 жыл бұрын
Hi Marie, I just looked at about 20 videos and none of them do it the way I do. Guess I better make a tuning video soon! Tony's vid is a good one and covers some things that others don't which I think important.. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJezo6GtiJ6kn5Y ... hope this helps!
@marievanpeski51855 жыл бұрын
@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons cool Bob, well i got them changed for better or worse and . I've trolled thru most of them and am still confused as to which side of the neck the string should lay...inside or outside of the winding..some vids arn't very clear on that , well to me that is but Im not the brightest bulb at best..M.
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons5 жыл бұрын
Hi Marie, If I am understanding correctly your question... lean your guitar against the wall and when you are looking at it, the thickest (6th string ) starts on the left, and as you move right the strings get thinner and thinner From left to right 6,5,4,3,2,1 and 1 being the thinnest. So inside the winding... I'm not sure what you mean? It's difficult to explain anything about putting strings on a guitar without the visual. I need to do this video... thanks Marie, bob
