I really do love how subtle and unsubtle the dynamic between Miles & The Spot is. One character made his debut in 2011 and didn’t (truly) become a beloved character until 2018. The other was virtually unheard of until this movie outside of one or two cartoons and the comics where he always stayed a joke. "This is gonna be good for us, Spider-Man." "You and me, we’re finally gonna live up to our potential."

What I love most about the Spot in ATSV is how he evolves as a villian. He goes from simple villian person of the week, to one who learns to use their powers effectively, to straight up eldritch horror. All good in one movie.

I think this film also deconstructs Spider-Man's quippy and humorous personality and interactions with villains. By treating the Spot as essentially a joke and not taking the interaction seriously, he escalated the situation by amplifying on the Spot's own negative emotions and insecurities. I think it's just interesting the implications there as well as the nature of de-escalation in conflict resolution. Which is an interesting idea in-itself for a movie that serves as an allegory for police abolition.

I didn’t see ATSV as an allegory for police abolition. To me, it touched more on police reform, and certain characteristics that could make it possible, such as Gwen’s comment about her dad wearing the badge to prevent someone else who shouldn’t (i.e., corrupt cops, including white supremacists) from doing so. Jeff Davis has a “by-the book” philosophy as a police officer, implicitly in conjunction with his race, which I can’t recall the details of right now. Could you explain why you believe the movie is an allegory for police abolition?
@cabnbeeschurgr6440
@cabnbeeschurgr6440 10 ай бұрын
@@astraldirectrixI'm not sure where they got police abolition from. The movie doesn't do acab to any extent, in fact both captain Stacy and Jefferson are shown to be good men at heart. Stacy's flaw is that he puts the law before his personal life and relationships, even when the law is in the wrong morally. But he does come back around. The way this movie treats parent-child relationships was very refreshing compared to a lot of modern movies that villify parents or have them be negative stereotypes.

@@astraldirectrix Yeah sorry for the late response, I've been busy. So, Spider-Society is basically a multiversal police force. Their job is to monitor, to regulate, i.e. to POLICE the multiverse in order to eliminate any anomalies and maintain canon events, and they posit this mission in a very dualistic, either/or manner. Either we enable canon events OR the multiverse will be destroyed, regardless of if these canon events involve death and trauma. In order words, canon events are a kind of necessary evil for the greater good as it were. This is a direct allegory for police abolitionism, since policing posits that either we maintain status quo OR we have absolute disaster and chaos. Either we police the public and the world to achieve a desired outcome OR we don't get a desired outcome at all. There is no room for criticism or debate or discussion. Even someone were to suggest "Hey, maybe we don't need the police for public safety to exist", people would think you are attacking the very idea of safety itself. Safety and order becomes conflated with policing, even though they are actually two separate concepts. Miles represents this decoupling in a sense, he criticises the mythology that is canon event theory and posits we can protect the multiverse without enabling essentially mass death and misery. Comparatively, we can protect the world without relying on a system that kidnaps (we call this arresting) or isolates people (we call this incarceration); the "necessary" evils of policing, which is a system that completely rejects the consents of its people, aren't actually necessary at all, and only exist to serve the needs of people in power. Policing serves the needs of the wealthy and political power; it maintains the social order of capitalism and the state, even if maintaining those needs causes lots of suffering for other people. Spider-Society serves to meet Miguel's needs; he was given a traumatic situation from losing his entire family and he blames himself for it. Canon event theory provides the perfect explanation for a person who is extremely suffering: it says my trauma was all for a good reason, my damage was "good damage" if you were. I "had" to suffer in order to help everyone is the message, even though such a claim doesn't actually provide any healing or direct forward. Miguel cannot be wrong about canon event theory, because if he is, all the people he allowed to die or suffer in order to preserve the canon was for nothing, and worst, all of his pain and trauma was completely pointless. Miguel lashes out very violently against anyone who disagrees with this theory, similar to how police lash out against people who question that institution's legitimacy. The establishment in our own world cannot be wrong about policing theory either, because if the cultural narrative changes to include the "third way" of police abolition, that we can protect the world without non-consensual violent measures, a huge pillar that legitimizes capitalist state society crumbles too. I think ATSV posits that Miguel and the Spider-Society are wrong about how canon events work, and will side with Miles narratively in the next film. Even so, yeah I think the allegory is there. Sorry if this doesn't make much sense

I think Spot also brings a very special feeling I’ve only seen before in one of my own villains: “Why would I stop? This is the only thing I’m good at.” His life is so miserable, what talents he has are so undervalued, if he can’t improve this one talent he’s discovered then he feels he might as well be dead. When he fights Spider-Man, those brief moments when he’s winning are the first time he’s felt good about himself since the accident-same goes for when Spot figures out how to power himself up-and the more he wins, the better he feels. And, god, how can you ask someone living a life of isolation, disrespect, and mockery to let go of the *one thing* that makes life not just bearable but even slightly pleasurable? How can you expect them to? He feels like he’s found not just identity but *purpose* to his very existence, something everyone everywhere is seeking, so of course Spot doubles down every chance he gets. There’s something so heartbreakingly pathetic in a villain who behaves the way they do because this is the only thing they have left. And there’s something so terrifying, because it means that the very behavior you need them to stop? That’s the only thing they have to *lose.*

yeah, I've seen some people saying it's weird he fixates on Miles, but Miles is the only person left he has any connection to. He's excited to see Spiderman during his first robbery and become something, anything, in relation to Spiderman. He wanted to be a villain because that's all he thought he had left after his colleagues, friends, family, and face left him. The Spot even had his tragic backstory and persona ready like some giddy D&D player. His parasocial fixation isn't healthy and he's still the bad guy, but I get it.

The thing is though, ATSV establishes that any disruption in the Canon will cause that universe to start collapsing in on itself, as we saw with Earth 50101 and with Miguel's "villain origin" story. If Earth 42 still ended up existing for a whole year despite its spider not biting Miles or Peter from that universe, then it stands to reason that this wasn't a Canon event, and that Earth 42's spider was always meant to bite someone from another dimension.
@snowboundwhale6860
@snowboundwhale6860 10 ай бұрын
It's cool how Miles was also hinted during the first movie to have been on the way to becoming Prowler Miles himself prior to the bite, and gets set on the path to being Spiderman by the other spiders (seen by his spider sense colours being Prowler's green & purple when he meets his own verse's Spiderman, then becoming blue & red by the end). So if 42 Miles was meant to become a Spider and became Prowler instead, then they've basically traded roles. If canon events are real and it's not Miguel misunderstanding what went wrong in his own dimensional fumble and declaring it as fact, this could be why 42 hasn't collapsed; The narratives for universes the two universes traded places and the broad strokes surrounding them were able to self-correct.

Another thing I love is that it reverses the framing of the threat away from the standard tropes. Miles is confronted with a multiverse shattering threat. The entire spider community and mumtiverse is against him. (Friends not withstanding) but the actual threat HE is trying to prevent isn't the destruction of all that. It's saving his father which seems small in the grandiose scheme of things. In the battle of titans and God's my man's is worried about one relatively small person. Ironically so is spot.

The overall point is fair enough, but I'd like to point out that Spot isn't 'that' much of a joke in his debut story. Sure, the introduction is played for laughs, Spider-Man does mock most of his villains that way and Spot got some of the most scathing mockery possible, but in both of his first fights against him, he kept Spidey on the backfoot for most of it thanks to his powers being hard to comprehend for his opponent and him having a somewhat good idea of how to use them to their fullest. It wasn't until the end where Spidey drove him into a corner that he cracked and begged for forgiveness like a coward. I'm sure that's enough for most to classify him as a joke villain, but his debut was seriously strong otherwise. It's mostly his legacy thereafter that made him a joke in the publics eyes. (Even though there is that one newer story where he becomes a REALLY scary silent assassin that uses his spots for some really brutal kills, but that wasn't part of the point I wanted to make)

I loved your analysis in this! Your point about Spot not having an identity got me thinking: One of my favorite parts of Spider-man stories is his compassion for the villains and him trying to help them. And in Miles case he hasn't had an opportunity to do that because Prowler got shot and Kingpin was so far gone. But sort of like how in most Peter stories he doesn't stop the robber who kills Ben, and that regret causes him to learn the theme; what if Miles not showing compassion to Spot is his version of not stopping the robber that shoots ben? What if Miles needs to learn that he needs to show compassion to the villains too in order to truly understand his responsibility. And that way the loving family in his life could still live because he learned the main theme through a different person. Another thought: What if part of Miles showing Spot compassion helped Spot try to do something more altruistic, and with his powers, he could find a new identity among the multiversal Spider-society. He could use his powers to help the Spider-society go between universes and protect them and would therefore have an identity, a purpose, and a community who recognizes and relies on him. Plus there might be cool science stuff he could do since that's what he was into even before the Spot stuff.

Another interesting aspect of the dichotomy of the Spot vs Miles is how their cultural and racial backgrounds impact their perspectives. Miles, as a POC is more used to and prepared for being disrepected and this is shown in the movie through the speach his mom gives. She tells him to never forget who he is and never let anyone tell him he doesn't belong, which is important and familiar advice for any member of a marginalized community. As a result, when Miles is disrespected by the other spider people he deals with it in a healthier way by relying on his inner strength and reaffirming who he is. Meanwhile, the Spot, as a white man, is used to privelage and reacts much more violently and unhealthily when it gets taken away. His mentality is reminiscent of many incels and mass shooters who often feel disrespected for various relatively insignificant reasons and channel that into extremely destructive behaviors because they're used to getting everything.

This is the first time that I've seen someone compare the Spot to incels and mass shooters, and I kinda have to disagree on that. We don't know what kind of life Johnathan Ohnn had before he became the Spot, so we can't really make assumptions about his "privilege". His reactions towards Miles were so violent because in his eyes, Miles, the person who blew up the collider with Ohnn near enough to be affected, not only didn't take responsibility for turning him into the Spot, but even belittled him and his situation by calling him "villain of the week". Heck, the transformation itself is quite horrifying when you think about it; as he says himself, he literally LOST HIS FACE, which is now replaced by a large black void. His entire body mutated into this lanky form with unusually long arms and interdimensional portals constantly forming on his ghostly white skin. While I don't doubt that cultural and racial backgrounds played some part in their situations, I don't think the Spot's mentality can be explained as incel-ish or because of loss of privilege. When you undergo a physical change so immense that everyone you know doesn't recognize you as a fellow human being, and then the person you see as responsible for that change makes quips and jokes about your situation, I think it's a bit justifiable to want to get even.
@samuelrosenberg1991
@samuelrosenberg1991 10 ай бұрын
@dctrsnstr Well, another question we can ask here is why is he blaming Miles in the first place for what happened to him. Why does he blame Miles for blowing up the collider instead of Kingpin and Doc Ock for creating the collider in the first place? I think its significant that the only thing Miles ever did to him directly before their confrontation was hit with a bagel, which was a pretty minor incident in self defense because all the scientists were literally trying to kill him. So I think there is an interesting comparison to incels here too: incels, among other things, always blame external factors for their situation and never critically examine how their own actions and attitudes effect how others treat them. Similarly, The Spot only blames Miles for what happened to him instead of critically examining his own role in an obviously evil company (he literally tried to shoot Spiderman with a laser gun). Another point I want to make is that after a certain point, even The Spot doesn't think his powers are that bad "My holes aren't a curse, they're the answer." After then, he seems to really enjoy his powers and even if he would still prefer to have a face, he's making the best of it and is now mostly upset about being disrespected. As I wrote about in my original comment, he dealt with that disrespected in a very unhealthy way. In response to the whole privelage thing, yeah there's a lot we don't know him, but we can assume at least that his job as a scientist was pretty well paying. Coincidentally, my brother was recently hired to be a full time quantum researcher at a major company, which is about as comparable a job as you could get and he will be paid very well. Jonathan Ohnn worked directly with Olivia Octavius so he must have been pretty high-ranking in the research team too. I know privelage is a very complicated and multifaceted topic but it at least gives us some insight into his situation.
@dctrsnstr
@dctrsnstr 10 ай бұрын
@@samuelrosenberg1991 I see what you mean about Ohnn blaming Miles instead of Kingpin or Doc Ock for the creation of the collider, and my answer to that is that those two have already been dealt with after Into the Spiderverse. They were already arrested, with Doc Ock literally being hit by a truck, and now Miles is the last person that Spot needs to address. I don't think the Spot even had that much hostility towards Miles at the beginning, he seemed more intent on explaining his backstory and maybe engaging with a small scuffle between them. It wasn't until the "villain of the week" line and their time in the Alchemax collider that he got REALLY pissed, especially since he lost of all his relationships and societal worth upon becoming the Spot. As for the laser gun thing, we have no idea how powerful those things really are. In Into the Spiderverse, the lasers' effects didn't really seem to do much other than leave slight char marks on whatever they hit, and they weren't even powerful enough to do any significant damage to trees, so it's likely they weren't trying to KILL the Spidermen. As for why he was even in that company in the first place, he likely wanted to study quantum science for his own reasons, and found that Alchemax would be the best place to do so. I'm sure that he was paid a lot and got to a high position, but we don't know HOW he got into that position. Becoming a professionally recognized quantum scientist likely takes an insane amount of effort and preservation, and then using that knowledge for interdimensional travel is even MORE insane. And after he was transformed into the Spot, all of that became *worthless* since he likely would never be allowed in a lab or near his colleagues again due to his condition; or, at least it WAS, until he found a way to properly utilize his newfound abilities and even enhance them further, which is why he was so excited, and might've gotten power-hungry. I'm not trying to say that the Spot is good/justified or Miles is bad, but to call him privileged or an incel just doesn't sit right with me, especially when compared to TRUE incels like Tighten from Megamind. Those words, in my opinion, has become about as overused as "woke" and many others. What makes the Spot interesting is that he's more of a MANUFACTURED villain rather than a ticking time bomb, or a purely evil villain like the High Evolutionary or Jack Horner.
@samuelrosenberg1991
@samuelrosenberg1991 10 ай бұрын
@dctrsnstr So it seems like maybe we don't really disagree that much here. As you said, Spot being called a 'villain of the week' is what caused him to start getting more vengeful and violent, while Miles getting called an anomaly caused him to fight even harder for what he believes in. All I was pointing out is how this can be understood, whether it was intentionally written this way or not, as a parallel to some real life personality types and experiences that have racial components. Maybe incel wasn't the best word to describe that attitude, but I think they stem from similar worldviews. But yeah it's not like I'm trying to claim Spot was literally written to be an incel or something like Hal in Megamind was.

I reallly like this breakdown. Spiderverse is literally a genius premise matched by brilliant execution. The meta narrative (as you touched on with Spot) is literally weaponized by the story. A stellar example is using the comic book look. Other stylized/npr animations like Arcane or the Last Wish did this but not to the extent of Spiderverse (In Arcane, they incorporate meta references and game mechanics from League) I'd argue it's a kind of intertextuality using everything in an IP (while still drawing from archetypes from other stories ofc) Basically Spidervese's producers know exactly why they love Spiderman, and use it tenfold.

Spot on .. All jokes aside I really love foils in fiction because they show the power of choice or nature/nurture debate. Smallville does this with Clark Kent and Lex Luthor. Both have distant fathers (literally for Clark bc Jor-El is dead so Clark literally is talking to a computer program) who love testing them, lots of power and the desire to fit in. Both lie and hurt people close to them (not intentionally for Clark). Clark had good parents and a real friends and chooses to hold back with his power. Lex didn't and chooses to use his power to control. Smallville of course shows that while Clark may have enabled Lex Luthor, episodes like "Lexmas" shows Lex was pretty much destined to be a megalomaniac (like Alexander the Great) and pretty dogmatic (like Martin Luther). Tl:dr: Character foils are amazing

Avi Arad is such a strange dude cause he is responsible for some of the best and some of the worst decisions when it comes to Marvel's work outside of the comics, and Spider-Man in particular, but when he hits it he hits hard, I'm so glad they consulted him and we got The Spot because Across The Spider-Verse easily made Spot one of the best Spidey villains ever.

Nice to see ya back! Great breakdown❤ Honestly looking from a zoomed out position, i also like where the villians in this franchise thematically go: the problems that are small obstacles, the problems that go with you, and (I'm hoping because its Spider-Man) the problems that will always be Look forward to seeing more from you here and the other channel!

Awesome to see you back! Excellent analysis. I am working on character development for a villain for a story I want to write. I also love Across the Spider-Verse, so this video is very timely for me and got me thinking a lot. The head of Marvel saying "Use the Kingpin's Johnny On The Spot" is such a case of longstanding story understanding it made me laugh at no one else thinking to keep following the web from the last movie's original universe for the sequel. Way to lose a thread between projects in communication and have a hail mary from your company's God.

This whole video is really well done but I have to say that hearing an American talk about the Lampton Worm was wild. I grew up about ten miles from Penshaw, and that fable is in my blood. Barely anyone in the rest of the UK knows it, so it was the last reference I was expecting.

I Really Hope in the next film we get to see Spot now full on dark kill a load of people even just minor characters in creative horrifying ways as with his powers the dude can be a very serous threat I remember in a short story where he goes after this crime Boss who has a load of security and he effortlessly kills all the guy's Henchmen in Brutal ways. my man can be a serous Spot of Bother when he applies himself.

Do you have a list of the antagonist archetypes you mentioned? Because I made a list myself a while back, and I'm kinda surprised by how similar it sounds to the ones you mentioned. My list is: -The force of nature -The mastermind (i suspect this is who you called the "control" villain) -The sadist -The "could have been a hero" -The actual hero

I think this channel kinda reminds me that just because someone is a profesional expert, that doesn’t mean they’re not flawed or don’t have biases. Because Bleach does not have great writing, the new episodes are mostly good due to rule of cool and stellar art and animation. The writing itself is juvenile

Fun fact: in grammar, "parallelism" is the mechanism of ensuring that all items in a list are structured so that they can be ordered interchangeably. For example, "I need to get some eggs, broccoli, and some ham" breaks the rules of parallelism -- either the word "some" needs to be removed from in front of "ham" or added in front of "broccoli". If you don't, then not all the items in the list are interchangeable -- you should be able to order them however you want, but if you did that here, you could, for example, end up with "I need to get some some ham, eggs, and broccoli". Is that important? No. Is that related to this video? No. Is it even interesting? Probably not. But now you know it, so ha.

I had a feeling that we would disagree on this, what you call 'seemless integration' is what i call 'remember me writing' where the villain is a random minor character from the previous installment, like abby from the last of us. This was my 1st problem with the game as abby is the daughter of one of the doctors from the hospital scene who has 5 seconds of screentime. I think it would be better if she was related to a more major character like nolan norths character for example. To me, this type of writing seems lazy but i havent finished the video yet, maybe youll change my mind
@fantasysherlockholmes

Forgot to mention, i saw spot as a parody of that type of writing, he felt like the writers were saying that it is bad, which is why he is presented as a loser at the start of the film

As much as I dislike TLOU2, I think that for the message they were going for, that all of the enemies you kill in the first game are not just enemies, they were people. You never think about or see their family, but by our nature every person has two parents, which already gives you two possible characters who would most likely be upset about their death.
