Yes, this is a great song with all the versions. * The Spector version did a few things that Lennon liked. - He lowered the pitch of John’s voice which Lennon preferred. - Spector took out the girls singing in the chorus which Lennon wanted removed (Lennon thought they were not good singers). - What Glyn Johns did which was a step towards what Lennon wanted was to remove the intro with bird’s wings flapping but Glyn Johns’ drumbeat intro was eliminated by Spector which Lennon preferred. - Those changes by Spector are in all later versions including the Naked version produced by Paul.

It's John's song that got Beatles'd up. While my guitar gently weeps is George's song that suffered the same fate but had Eric onboard. Ringo gave us yellow submarine bless him. Paul was gifted let it be. So many songs were collaborations in production but across the universe is timeless with John singing with a childlike purity from the depths of despair there is always hope if you ask.

“Nothing’s gonna change my world” - Lennon was so good at coming up with somewhat elliptical but broadly allusive/universally relatable lines like this. In a similar vein, Paul came up with “the movement you need is on your shoulder”, which (famously) he was not convinced about until Lennon made him see its elliptical depth.

I’m sure they had beautiful moments in India, but it also seems that India is where an important schism happened in the Beatles. They all leave India at different times. @@ModerateObserver Well observed, and George it seems declared himself Not Guilty. Despite the smiles in this video, it is clear their relationships were changing in the wake of the panning that 'Magical Mystery Tour' got. 1968 was very tough year all round. The innocence of their earlier years and music would never return. This song is a glimmer of deep spiritual hope underlying the despair, frustration and madness of losing people like Bobby K and MLK.

Never saw all this footage before - only stills. It is cool and is an utter time capsule. Just heard the Glyn Johns mix too - I really like sound and balance of it but can't help the feeling that John should have realised although it was (just) singable at this tempo, it may have worked better slower. I like that wah-wah gtr that George added later which combines with John's slower dreamier vocal which enhances the meaning and contemplative aspect of the song so I have an appreciation for the Spector treatment - save for the totally out place Hollywood movie-style choir backing. IF you could create the Spector version without that choir, I think that'd be the definitive version. As things stand here, you lose the chance to fully appreciate the beauty and profundity of John's lyrics as they are just whizzing by too fast to grasp in real time. I agree with John and many others - this is one of the best Beatles lyrics.

There is a raw take of this song with just John, I believe it was released on the White Album reissue.

I agree with you. And I miss the cello. It does a very creative line that adds some "uplifting" vibes to the ending.

This is not the Gyn Johns mixed version. He omitted the teenage girl fans voices you hear in this version. This is the 1968 WWF album version - mixed I think by Geoff Emerick.

No. Not in the slightest. The insipid chorus with the mantra, dates it terribly. It’s not even in their ten best. Why do you think it sat in the can for over two years? It’s awful

You have wonderfully put these images and the footage of the Beatles to this beautiful version of John’s masterpiece. John himself said he thought it was his best poetry, and Glyn Johns’ simple, clear production is perfect. So beautiful.

This is a lovely 'trinket' (and gorgeous footage too, thanks! 🙏🙏). I absolutely stand by the Spector version tho', (and for his 'Long and Winding Road'). Although the latter, at least, was *not* gratefully received by its author... 😏 I guess this was (obvs.) well before the age when multiple versions/mixes of a song would cascade around but, from reading, John seems to've kinda hoped that a cut-down version would eventually be the *album* version however, it seems we're lucky that this track came out at ALL - and I for one, am eternally grateful for the 'mad genius' of Spector when it came to these 2 BEAUTIFUL Beatles songs... “Jai guru deva, om...” 🙏☮ 🥰

It's just sensational to see the Beatles in these sequences from the Rishikesh trip - the very last time they would be mostly happy. It's before John brought Yoko into the clubhouse(so to speak), and everything changed.
