Thanks for this video. My system had a small leak that I suspected was in the evaporator. But adding a pound would last almost two years when it started. Now it was 7 months. I cleaned the leaves and dirt out under the condenser looking for traces of oil. Didn't find any. But after watching this video I'm going to ask service guy to check it out before looking at the evaporator. Have a tentative appointment next April to decide if we need to replace the evaporator or install a new system. Installed in 2004. Leak started in 2018. Thanks again for the valuable information.

Thank you for posting this video. I moved into a condo apartment four years ago, and the AC never worked properly. I did some research, in short, the AC is fixable. However, I had over eight technicians look at it, and they either did not diagnose the problem properly, wanted to upsell, or both. I took upon myself to learn how to fix the AC. I would happily pay to get it fixed, but that is not an option. At a minimum, I might arrange specific repairs with a technician. I do not know enough yet for an intelligent choice. Your video brought that day a little closer.

Here’s the delema, fix or replace? .... a typical coil can be half the cost of a new unit. If it’s a leaking joint, fine... but typically where there’s one leak, there’s more. The law of diminishing returns apply. When the repair is done, what do you have? An old, inefficient, not environmentally friendly heaper, that costs more money to operate in comparison to modern energy efficient units. Then the fan motor dies.... now your costs are more than the new unit would have cost. Good Mechanics recommend replacement units because it will save money for the customer in the end. I do commercial only, and we typically make more income by repairing these older units. In the end, the customer makes the choice, after all, we work for them!

@@hvac01453 Thank you for the interest. As I said before, I could not find an honest technician in my area. They only wanted to upsell because that is where the money is for them. My unit was not really looked at, not properly evaluated. I am learning how to make this repair, or at least how to properly evaluate my situation. From what I have seen, I Know my unit is worth repairing.

I got this detector and what I can say is, it will take time to adapt to this style of alerting. The loud hissing is usually easily located leaks, you’ll know the general area, the yellow attenuation tube helps limit the reflected sound and focus the source of the leak a bit better. The smaller leaks sound more like bacon frying, a little popping sound, this is also heard in your video. I have used it to locate about 20 leaks on one unit... these were very small leaks coming thru the solder joints and verifying with Simple green as a bubble solution. Especially useful in loud factory areas.

@Puner54 problem is a lot of guys claim to be technicians but they are just installers with minimal knowledge. I have been in the trade 20 years now and I would absolutely never assume. The only reason you would ever tell someone to change the furnace along with the AC equipment is if it makes sense. They shouldn't ever tell you what to do only recommend it and give you different options for which route you want to take.

Tech said you must have a leak somewhere, just get a new central air unit… didn’t look for a leak. So what is the proper professional answer? Oh, he also said they can’t find R-22 …they could find R-22 , fill it, but could leak out right away….so why waste your money buy a new unit. Is that the professional answer?

Valves are fixable Leaks around rusted area is not worth fixing BUT we could fix them but you'll never know if it will start leaking somewhere else since it's rusted. Condensers and coils are usually 5 years warranty, and if they are registered they go up to 10 years, if your still under warranty? Replace it, If not ? Same as above, rust cause are not worth fixing , just replace it and register it so you'll have 10 years warranty, but if it's dented or got hit like accidently wile mowing? Yes fix is worth it if it's a new unit like 1-8 years old. Not all the time 8 years old units are good but mostly they are good . Filter dryer , joints, valves, bad brazing areas are all easy to fix and quick.

Very informative video, and that leak detector looks quite effective. I didn't see a reference to it in your links, could you provide again? Just a comment, I've had 2 different companies now attempt to find a major leak in my heat pump, and both failed! Almost 15 pounds of R410A leaking out within 30 days! The second guy replaced what he saw as a leaking king valve, pressurized the system and waited an hour for any leaks to appear in pressure drop, none found. First guy had filled system with nitrogen and had a nitrogen "sniffer" that found nothing. Could a tiny leak of the sort you demonstrate result in such a large and rapid refrigerant loss, yet remain undetected by these other methods? I'm pulling my hair out and considering a complete unit replacement now.

Hi, great video. I would like to ask a question AC SERVICE TECH: Is there any other leak detector You would recommend me? I'd like to get one ACCUTRACK, but here in Mexico is hard too expensive to get one, Is there any cheaper option you would recommend? Thanks in advanced and keep with the great job You do in every video.

In my experience as a widow w/2 refrigerated A/C units is technicians prefer to replace expensive rather tha look for the problem &/or leak. Once my grieving ended, I realized I have been hiring A/C companies for the past 15 years to replace 2 A/C units & furnace. I will be calling my attorney today to work w/this new company I hired that did not fix the problem. I 2as told the leak had been fixed, 9lbs of refriferant had been added that lasted 1 week. Now the want $1600-$2000+ to replace yet another furnace. Sick of it!

No need to spend over $400 for a tool like that unless you are in the business.........just make up your own soapy solution from liquid dish soap in a spray bottle and spray it everywhere. First fill the bottle with cold water to 3/4 full and add a little soap to it. Doesn't take a lot of soap either.

How would you go about finding a leak in a furnace evaporator? If other tests indicate a leak but you can't find one, would you remove the evap core to test it?

@@allanbrito13 did have sent refrigerant so nothing to pump down. Pressure tested for half hour because I couldn’t imagine N2 not dropping by even a decimal if there is leak. I cut and isolated coil , braze cores and did pressure taste and used pressure ultrasonic and soap bubbles, no leaks. Teatrera pipe as well. Nothing. Leak were on compressor discharge and suction connections! 8 year old system. I still don’t get why pressure so close to leak won’t show.

Is the ultrasonic leak detector better than the baccarat h10 pro??
@hvac01453
@hvac01453 4 жыл бұрын
Porye Yang my option is No. It doesn’t replace bubbles either. It’s just another tool you have in your bag of tricks to try be the best you can at your job. If your a diy person, stick with bubbles. Leaks can be the most time consuming and most common problem for hvac techs. I have 6 electronic detectors. I use mainly 3, and then bubbles to visually see the leak. The only authorized leak detection on a flat system is R22 W/ Nitrogen. The H10 is the gold standard. The Fieldpiece is better on an R410a system, that still has refrigerant (low).

@@acservicetechchannel If I buy the leak detector and the coil needs to be replaced then it cost me extra, but if I find it in the tube it'd save a ton of money. Not sure what to do? Had 2 big companies out last year and neither had a leak detector. They'd rather sell a new unit I suppose? Thanks for your help!
