Yeah, the Bezos songs make more sense when considered in the context of Bo being mid-pandemic-shutdown: the world is halted and suffering, institutions that were supposed to protect the public were failing left and right (healthcare, politicians, social safety nets, etc) and meanwhile all the billionaires were raking in RECORD profits and partying safely in their isolated mansions. So the notion of a cheerful song encouraging Bezos as if he's some determined underdog is the height of bitter sarcasm.

Well I mean, it's the story neoliberal capitalism tries to sell to us, isn't it? The so-called 'self made man'. That it's totally possible to go out there and hustle and work yourself to the bone in order to build an empire. And yes, it is true that some people have had success with their ventures despite the odds. But. There is no such thing as a self made billionaire*; *EVER*. Bezos was the richest man in the world by a large margin when Bo was making this...would have been, uh, interesting to see the difference in reaction if he'd picked Musk instead, but I think it's because of the way Amazon has just crept into so many facets of our lives, like, how much of the internet is on AWS?!? Also Bezos is competent. Evil capitalist, but actually competent *no, not even Taylor Swift, her family was VERY well off, to the point they could afford to just pack up and move a thousand miles away in order to get her a career, assisted by her father buying a stake in the fledgling record label in order to have a vote in how things were handled. He was a hedge fund manager and her mother was an advertising and marketing executive - yes she has worked very hard, yes she has talent (very overrated imo but I'm not going to pretend she's not good at what she does), but if it weren't for all the above factors we likely never would have heard of her

One of my favourite parts about the Sexting music video is the note he flashes on the screen at 2:08 For anybody who missed it I highly suggest you go check it out. Press pause to read it, but essentially it’s him telling her that she should not feel pressured to send anything and that he wants her to feel comfortable and know that this is all just fun and at any point if it’s not fun for her they can stop.

I appreciate that you notice how intentional Bo’s performance is. He’s brilliant at making the in-between moments feel spontaneous and natural, but you’re right; everything he does in this special is intentionally planned, produced, and performed (which I find even more impressive)

I love that, too. Though, there are a couple moments I think are most likely unplanned and raw that he chose to include.

what i understand he plans down to the breaths he takes, part of his anxiety i believe, perfectionist
@jlerrickson

@@Kate98755 I don't think that's true. Bo has real experiences with depression and anxiety. He definitely chose isolation as a theme for the special and leaned into that, but there are consequences to doing that when you're already under stress from something that actually contributes to that, not to mention everything that accompanies it.

@@jlerrickson i’ve actually read that his performances are completely planned, the parody on kanye…the last scream was unplanned, his crew knew something was up. he’s doing all effects himself, it has to be timed perfectly, he’s extremely talented,

Fun to note that Bo has acted in his own TV show before. Only ran for a season but it was so comically and story dense. Was called Zach Stone is gonna be famous.

The duality of wanting a society that rewards laborers for their efforts and a man who literally built an empire by working at a loss to give people what they want. Very simplistic way of putting it, but that's the essential of Bezos. Check out CJs video essay if you find the time.

Oh yes, amazon is such a massive corporation because it worked at a loss. You ar confusing doing something because its right inspite of profitability, and foregoing profit to monopolise another industry for greater profits later.

@Cyborg_Lenin I don't think it is as binary as you said. I think part of him was greedy and saw that as a viable plan toward long term growth. I think he also felt good about how his business was making books available for people who want to read books, for a cheaper cost to them (don't what is right). And there's probably a lot of other factors in there as well.

It’s odd to me that anyone could possibly question the very blatant and obvious sarcasm and disdain he makes crystal clear in his messages, especially ones as simple as Jeff Bezos.

@@tcrzsppr3163 in the late 1700s France when guillotines were commonplace and the french revolution took place, the income gap in their country was extremely high but still less than it is today. the gilded age in america is another example of extremely high wealth disparities that were solved through government intervention. For example billionaire rockefeller's standard oil was broken up.
