Thanks for all the videos! I do not like Active Lane Keeping Assist. It has scared me many times. 1. When I have to overtake, I use turn signals. But when I drive back, I do not. Then the car brakes and keeps the car in the opposite direction. Terrible when approaching an oncoming car! 2. When I drive on a narrow road and meet another car, I keep to the side. Then the car brakes and keeps the car in the middle of the road. I get scared! I appreciate when it thumps in the steering wheel. It is enough for a safe journey.

There are times when I feel the need to switch it off temporarily, for example I had to travel to Devon the other day a couple of times and the narrow roads are unpainted, it wanted to course correct a few times, so I just toggled it off. Other times though when it’s active above 40mph like on a motorway, it’s pretty good. Just depends where I’m driving 👍🏼

Asked and finally answered. My Question: So the Lane Keep Assist: say there is a diesel coming from the opposite direction, WIDE LOAD, taking up a foot or more in your lane, lights flashing pretty big kind of hard to miss, so you hug the white line and trust during this 'passing by' you each hold steady and true. Would the autocorrect cause an accident? How smart is it to where you decide not to be in control of your own vehicle? Have you tested that? Is it worth a life or someone's limbs just for a chance at beating a manufacturer in a lawsuit? Just how close to the white line you you have to be? Some instances you have to be on a shoulder. Say someone had just bought an outdated APC that is very wide. Is it still a safety feature at this point? Did you hear someone say it was a good idea and you are just repeating it is a good idea? Did you test it? I am more interested in what people know not what they think. I have seen a lot of videos where a lot of people talk about this feature from a number of manufacturers no videos of it ever being using. Yet everyone claims SAFETY FEATURE. Is this true or no. I do know you can have the warnings without having the vehicle take over. That seems ok. Does it follow Asimov's law? It will 'lane keep assist' UNLESS at the risk of endangering or harming a human being? Is this just mercedes or ALL vehicles with Lane Keep Assist?
@npoleary2 ай бұрын
So all the car will do is check lane markings it does not feature an advanced camera system to detect the variety of different sized objects coming your way. *It is only an assist system.* Having bought a car and used this many times before, I as the driver will have to do something if a lorry with a wide load is coming my way or say an emergency vehicle comes onto my side of the road to overtake their side etc. I will have to: 1) Indicate to temporarily switch it off or 2) Switch it off in settings or 3) Or in a more extreme scenario if I had to avoid something or go over a lane marking with intent, it will not intervene. All this system will do is intervene if I drift over a lane marking without indicating if the system can see it (if the lines are painted correctly, it’s not raining too hard and load of other variables as detailed in the manual). I think as you said it’s very important to know a car’s capabilities regardless of the manufacturer so you know when it will take action and know what it is capable of. Happy to revisit this in a future video if you think it’ll be interesting!

Mercedes should have created a shortcut to turn this off at will like I’ve seen on a Kia. When driving on highways being repaved or expanded here in the US, the sensors are tricked by the old lane markings, while I’m intentionally following the new lane lines. My 2022 GLC used the brakes to jolt me back into what it thought was the right lane, in such a rough manner that it almost caused a collision with other cars properly following the temporary lane markers. I can’t be fiddling around with the MBUX Settings menus when driving at 55 mph.

Same thing happened to me in the UK on narrow motorway lanes. I dont want to sound like a wise-ass but ESP isnt used to prevent wheels to spin but to create counter moment around car center of gravity to keep your car in control not to drift. It applies braking to a specific wheel to create a counter moment to balance the car. Thats why you can not drift while ESP is on.

Quick question , does Mercedes have a lane assist feature that actively steers and keep you in lane similarly to Audi's Lane guidance or Kia's Lane follow assist. These two keep you in lane with minimal input from the driver. You do have to touch the wheel every 10 seconds or so though. I tried asking my local Mercedes dealer about this and they were not too sure.

@npoleary3 ай бұрын
Thank you! No this system does not keep the car between the lines all the time, this is designed to stop someone drifting or accidentally moving over a white line or dashed white line without indicating. Providing conditions are right then it can either jolt the car back into lane to stop someone leaving their space. If a Mercedes has the Driving Assistance Package, this will have a thing called Active Steering Assist, this will “guide” the car within the lane markings which is probably more like what you describe.

Dreadful device... A week after I bought my AMG last year I was driving on narrow motorway lanes along the M27 when there was a length of roadworks. The lanes were (temporarily) narrowed down and speed restricted to 50mph. Travelling along the centre lane within the speed limit, I passed an HGV driving on the inside lane. In that instance the cats eyes were located in the normal lane widths and my nearside wheel was tracking along them even though the lane lines were blacked out. Suddenly and without warning the car lurched to the right under auto assist almost into the side of a vehicle on my right narrowly avoiding a serious accident, Scared the life out of me. Now every time I get in the car it gets turned off..

Sadly I got rid of the A45S+ last summer as I really didn't like the lane discipline . Had such a near miss in 2022 when in a centre 50mph motorway lane (reduced width) when the wheels ran over the blacked out cats eyes whilst paralllel to a 30 tonner on the inside lane. The car veered sharply maybe only for a split second , but it was enough to shake you up.. . No thanks .That was first time it happened and at first I thought I had a puncture/blow-out as it was getting dark. I pulled over on the next available (safe) hard shoulder ta mile further on to check. Next day I discussed it with Mercedes but in UK they can't /wont disable it, though they admit to getting many complainants every single week about the same problem. I wish Mercedes would listen... In certain situations, it is far more dangerous than the protection it offers in claiming to keep you in lane. No thanks.

There will be instances where this technology is useful...drivng at night on a long motorway journey for example, but for me I do not like it and always routinely turn it off everytime I start my car along with the Start/Stop. The latter can be infuriating in the way it works when combined with an automatic gearbox. I found out the hard way with LKA because there is a left turn filter lane when approaching a roundabout on a 70mph dual carriageway that I drive regularly. Often it will be at night with no other vehicles around (pedestrians are not permitted) so no need to indicate and I gently let my car drift into this filter lane while doing approx 50mph, but I am given a violent fright by my car braking one side and wonder what the hell has just happened! By the way watching it in the above video does not prepare you for how violent this actually is. After that I made the decision to always disable this LKA.

Exactly what I do everytime. I have a laminated card that I leave in the front storage box where the gearshift would normally be to remind to switch it off everytime. What a pathetic system, and as for start/stop, it really cannot be doing the engine any good to keep cutting in and out like this?

I haven’t heard of MBUX needing a reset because of the sound…what’s it doing? If it doesn’t sound right, I’d get in touch with your local Mercedes dealership who will be able to take a look. Also I haven’t heard of a reset from Star & Tel before…does that turn it off and back on or something?

@@npoleary Yes, it was a bit annoying, both the Apple car play and radio stopped working. No sound.. nothing. You were my only hope as a Mercedes expert, so I did a quick scan under your channel to check if there was any mention of this issue or any troubleshooting steps. I couldn't find any video there. Finally, I did some looking over the internet and found many people were suggesting the 'soft re-set in this situation as a fix. I tried pressing both the start and tel button together and it switched off half of the screen and then it reinitialized with the 'MERCEDES BENZ' written over the screen after 2 or 3 seconds. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWGxeGt6j5t4na8 .. this site I looked for this help.

Dear nick, I’m still enjoying my A35 and just recently visited my local Mercedes dealership to add myself to the Mercedes me app. I’m sure this problem is staring me in the face but I cannot seem to lock or shut my windows remotely from my phone. I purposely left the windows open and the vehicle just to see if I could lock it from my mobile phone, on the Mercedes me app I do get a Highlighted area of the doors and windows in red telling me they are open but I can’t seem to find where to lock from this app. As stated I do get the warnings on the areas on the car in red but I’m lost on how to lock from that point. Kind regards paul

@@npoleary thank you nick for that advice, I did recently visit a local main dealership with my V5 document as I’m the new owner of the car and just importantly asked the dealership to cancel the account of the last owner of the car which I believe has been done. I was asked to download the Mercedes app when I got home which I now have but still don’t know if I can lock or open windows ect ect on the vehicle. Naturally the app shows me a lot of information about the car but when I want to close windows lock or unlock I can’t do it from my phone, and I’m sure there are a lot of other things you can do from your phone without having to pay extra for, although I’m aware there is a premium cost for certain things for the vehicle. I think I will make another visit to Mercedes to see if they can advise me. Thank you nick

Hey Nick. I'm in a similar boat. I have felt the steering wheel rumble and jolt however only 3 times in nearly a month of using this car. I have drifted gently from lane to lane, replicating an unintentional motion as I saw a Mercedes Genius in showroom who said the system doesn't respond if it senses an intentional lane cross. I had it on standard but for past 2 weeks on sensitive. I'm concerned it's not working properly.

Don't quite understand the difference between solid line and dashed line. In the US we have freeways and streets with multiple lanes separated by dashed lines .... Was expecting the system to "actively" keeping me in lane with break action no matter what line I drift across .... Am I understanding your description correctly ? only get a vibration on dashed line ?
@npoleary2 жыл бұрын
It depends, it will probably be set up differently in the US. In the UK: Dashed White Line: vibrating from steering wheel Solid White Line: Braking one side to jolt you back into lane (most commonly when a car is coming the other way) There are certain speeds when this is not active and will not operate every single time due to the lines painted on the road and weather conditions etc
@No1sonuk7 ай бұрын
@@npoleary I've not noticed anything from dashed lines in mine (UK). My Grandland would steer away from any of the lines.
@npoleary7 ай бұрын
It depends on the model, there are a lot of Mercedes models with varying different multimedia systems which control this so it might be best if you chat with a dealer and they can let you know exactly what yours will do in that situation. Some Mercedes now I’ve noticed you can adjust even more settings with it’s sensitivity. Also depends if it has “Active Lane Keeping Assist” or “Lane Keeping Assist” too!

Is this GLA the most dangerous car to drive? This lane assist feature made my heart miss a beat. Whilst overtaking a lorry travelling around 45mph, I went to overtake at around 70mph. The car steering suddenly tightened up and tried to pull back into the lane, not something that seems safe when you are heading back into the lane where the HGV is travelling slower than me. It's happened a few times when I have forgotten to switch it off. So annoying that it can't be switched off permanently. Had 3 GLC's previous and none of them had this stupid system. I suppose the hairbrains at MB will introduce it to all models in time!

Ah so that would happen if indicators weren’t used when venturing over a lane marking at speed. I’ve tested it a few times prior to making this video to see when it would activate 👍🏼 I don’t believe it’s Mercedes forcing it upon people, it’s safety regulations. I cover not just Mercedes but a few manufacturers across my channel and most new cars have it these days.

@@npoleary Thanks Nick for your reply. I'm afraid I don't share your view on this. If it was completely about safety, then I don't think you would have the option to turn it off at all. The fact that you can disable it, but annoying as it is not permanently, suggests to me it's another gimmick. I do however think I may have found a solution. Today I put some gorilla tape over the camera on the windscreen, and what do you know, with this gimmick still enabled it did not work, yippee! My next attempt will be to remove the tape as it will not last long with the wipers working, and chemically clean the screen around the camera and then fill in the area of the lens with an indelible black marker pen. This will hopefully block the camera from seeing the lines on the road as the tape did and will stop this gimmick from working. I know the camera has other functions that will not work, but my view is if you are a competent driver you should not need to rely on all this rubbish. Unfortunately I am stuck with this GLA for the next 12 months, so anything I can do to prevent all this rubbish from working, is a massive bonus to me

Trust me there are more regulations out there than people realise! Some get in the way, some can helpful eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/PDF/?uri=CELEX:32021R0646&from=EN Just did a quick search to find some legislation, I’m sure they’ll be more documentation on it. The most recent ones I’ve seen have a car’s camera system read traffic signs but have the car “beep” & “bong” if you go over the speed limit.

@@npoleary Thanks Nick, It seems like a game now to me. Manufacturers give you this stuff (legislation or not) and we spend time trying to circumvent it. The most annoying thing to me is you spend a lot of money on these cars, but you are never the one in control. Fair enough they put all this rubbish on their cars, but at least give the person spending the money the choice. Enabled or disabled, your choice, not their's to keep turning it back on everytime you start the car. Everyone is different, and the manufacturers should cater for all, especially with something as simple as on or off. Can't still get my head round swapping the GLC for this thing, need to go and checked for sanity I think.
