ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A man was shot after he opened fire on deputies outside the Gwinnett County jail on Monday afternoon. There was a massive law enforcement presence around the facility off Ga. Hwy. 316 outside of Lawrenceville soon after the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office said there had been an “active shooter situation” at the jail, which was locked down over the incident. No deputies were hurt. “Nobody is ever ok after these situations. There’s going to be ongoing trauma. Mental drama. Things that they will have to deal with. All of us when we have incidents like this, so you know so in that statement, I thank God none of my deputies got hurt physically,” said Sheriff Keybo Taylor. The suspected shooter was taken to the hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown. Sheriff Keybo Taylor said the suspect, known to law enforcement, was acting “erratically” before getting into the jail building. “Law enforcement had an encounter with him earlier. He went over to GJAC, over to the Gwinnett County Justice and Administration building and from there he came directly over to the jail,” Taylor said. “The individual had previous encounters with law enforcement prior to arriving at the Gwinnett County Justice and Administration Center earlier this afternoon. It was reported that his behavior was erratic.” The sheriff’s office said the suspect left the building while continuing “to demonstrate unusual behavior.” They said the suspect went to his vehicle, got a gun and fired at deputies, who immediately returned fire and shot the man. “I want to assure the community that there is no ongoing threat to the public’s safety,” Taylor said. “I commend the actions of the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office deputies for their quick and decisive response that allowed us to bring this incident to the best possible conclusion. I also thank all members of the Gwinnett County Police Department and Lawrenceville Police Department for their assistance.” The sheriff’s office said they asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to investigate the shooting, which is standard in shootings that involve law enforcement officers. The GBI confirmed to Atlanta News First that it’s opened an independent investigation. All traffic to the jail was redirected soon after the shooting, and the facility temporarily stopped accepting new inmates. The sheriff’s office said the jail has since resumed normal operations and is accepting inmates.

jI watched Gwinette go from the country, to nice suburbs, to another metro Atlanta trashed county. The crime went out memorial drive to Stone Mountain, then started North up through Gwinette. I knew people that lost 100s of thousands on their homes. But hey, I remember when Buckhead was a nice, clean, safe, enjoyable place too.

video shows nothing but fat cops taking way too long to get any sort of real firepower to deal with the threat.
