Recently on our podcast The Weekly Planet we had a discussion about numerous huge roles including James Bond, Indiana Jones, Aragon, Catwoman, Gandalf, Han Solo and more and the famous actors that very nearly landed those parts. This is an excert from that podcast because frankly, I have a kid due in a few weeks and I'm trying to get on top of the workload before then. Eric Stoltz was originally cast as Marty McFly in Back to the Future. They even filmed a decent chunk of the movie before they recast Michael J Fox

They have previously discussed that and shown the video. You might be thinking of something else they were only 2 or 3 weeks into filming at most. Back to the Future was shopped around for ages before it finally got picked up. If most of the movie had been filmed it's unlikely the studio would've let them start over. Word is he didn't even get told he was up for it because they needed him on Family Ties. They struck a deal and he'd film during the day at FT, drive to BttF then sleep in the car. He said he got 2 hours sleep a night for months. There's a sad addendum to the story. He had to leave Spin City because his Parkinsons was getting worse. He talked about it later and said he knew back then he had Parkinsons and didn't realise how much the lack of sleep would effect him. It accelerated his condition quite a bit. The Lance Henriksen Terminator one has a cool backstory. He turned up at Cameron's office with metal foil on his teeth, told the receptionist "I am here for James Cameron". Then sat in the waiting room and didn't move a muscle apart from occasionally showing his teeth. Receptionist didn't know who he was, and got freaked out, everyone else in the office got freaked as well... was about to call the cops, and James Cameron walked in, said "Oh hi Lance! You must be here for the audition". Then ended up casting him as a cop instead :D

Yeah, I'd agree, he's extremely consistent in the roles he takes, but not every movie has hit the same high marks he strives to achieve. Look at the cult classics like Last Action Hero or Junior or Twins, none are particularly good movies, but all benefit from Arnold's great performance.

16:49 I was a Twi-Hard back in the day so I know about this one. It’s all on the author’s website. Stephenie Meyer wrote the book in 2003 originally so her “casting choices” (aka references for physical descriptions of the characters) were dated by the time the actual movie was green lit in 2007. Her original choices for the main characters were Emily Browning and Henry Cavill. By the time they actually started casting the movie these actors were too old to believable portray teenagers. Henry Cavill was offered the role of Carlisle Cullen but had scheduling conflicts.

to be completely fair to Al Pacino, literally nobody understood Lucas' original screenplay for Star Wars. Throughout filming the cast would just not say lines as written, or they would approach Lucas about cutting lines because they didn't make sense. Then after test screenings the editors completely rearranged the entire film.

Here is the way the story is told. Chris Farley was a mess, but Dreamworks was working on this movie called Shrek. So to protect him, they put a watch on him constantly. They made sure that they were safe in their "investment" in this film. But then they did a test screening of the footage they had with Katzenberg, and Katzenberg said, we're not quite there with the technology yet, let's put this on hold for a while. So they shelved the film and pulled the watch off Chris Farley. Within days, Farley was dead.

I think it's odd that Sean Connery said he didn't take Gandolf because he didn't understand the role. He was the Green Knight in Sword of the Valiant. How could he do the Green Knight and not understand a wizard. I think he was either lazy and didn't read it all the way or maybe he had a bad taste in his mouth from doing fantasy films in the past. Sword of the Valient, Highlander, and Zardoz to name a few. Just a weird reason to turn down the role considering his past work and the fact that LOTR is a known property. Oh well. Ian killed it.

I think Harrison ford might have been too handsome and confident for Jurassic park. Sam Neil did a lot to help you feel the desperation of the situation because he looks and acts like a middle aged regular guy. I can't imagine the scenes being as intense with Indiana Jones running around in them.
