Bought my 944 as my first car at 17. I saved up and fought to convince my parents. When I bought it I knew how to change a tire and That was it. In my last 5 years of ownership I’ve rebuilt the front suspension, trouble shot many different gremlins and learned about electronics. Put in all brand new speakers, with a modern radio, replaced everything that was broken or wasn’t working, and even added other factory options that my car didn’t come with when I initially bought it. Brakes, starter, every single oil change on time, I just replaced the timing belt and balance belt. In the last 5 years of owning it I’ve put about 35,000 miles on it and it’s about to tick over the 200k mile threshold. I love this car to death and it will never leave my ownership as long as I’m alive lol. Edit: My car was totaled today. I am beyond heartbroken and shocked. Im alive because of the integrity of the structure and chassis. One of the safest cars I have ever driven. Thank you Porsche.

Is it worth getting it? What are the first things i should look out for when buying one?? Also, are parts expensive?
@TakeFlightGarage3 жыл бұрын
@@WoozieWookie it depends on the part, a control arm is $20 for an early car, but a fuel pressure damper is $500 so it depends. If this is a car you’re trying to purchase as an investment it’s not the best choice. If it’s a car you’re going to love and keep then absolutely go for it. I wouldn’t buy one unless you have another car you can depend on while the 944 is down. Keep up on oil changes and basic maintenance and these cars can last well over 3-400k miles. I just ticked over 200,000 myself. Most costly and expensive maintenance is timing belt. If that goes engine goes. 30-45k miles or 3 years is the general rule of thumb. $500 for a Tbelt kit with rollers and water pump, $1700 for labor at a Porsche shop, dealer will obviously be more expensive. If the car doesn’t have history move on. Look for obvious things like overspray, body gaps etc. check the coolant expansion tank for milkshake. Head can be clean but oil cooler seals will leak oil into the coolant system. That’s about a $700 job at a shop or a weekend at home. Every car is different. Pay as much attention to the owner as the car. Are they clean, organized, is the car inside or out even if it doesn’t run etc.

Another great option that's even cheaper than this is the 924S; it was a short two-year run of the 924 that basically had the powertrain ripped directly out of the base 944 and a few of the exterior bits from it too. I nearly bought one as my first car, a 1987 model in Guards Red with the black leather interior and the 5-speed for $8,500... oh yeah, and it had just clocked 36k on the odometer, so a low-mileage car. My mother was the only thing keeping me from traveling over to Dallas and picking the car up on site, especially after getting in touch with the owner and figuring everything out with it. She was against it for the fact it was a Porsche and an old one at that with no modern safety features. What a damn shame.

I love it. Edit: I had a Flowmaster and it was ok but I like my Magnaflow better. Edit 2: I’ve always driven her really hard. But I was doing modifications at the same time so I’d swap things out as they developed problems. 😆 Manual steering rack, engine, suspension, wheels and tires...and I got most of those free from parts cars I made money from. Edit 3: You don’t slide around in original leather sport seats 😉 Most comfortable 80’s Porsche seat outside of the 928. Edit 4: When my 16v engine gives up, and I have the resources, I will absolutely give Sabine an electric drivetrain with the goal of reaching 200 mph.

The power to weight ratio is close to a new Miata. I've taken a couple hundred pounds out of it. I like the rounded style of the 924 better and I think they match up well with the look of the early 928. One of my cars has the Koni set up and I like it, but I redid the other with 16 inch forged 928 sewer lids and all stock- with new struts and shocks and bushings and decent rubber ( I went Dunlop’s because it looks like I can’t get my beloved P7s for the fronts anymore unless I mix all seasons with summers on the back) .

911's are awesome and 944's are awesome. All Porsche's are awesome.
@16v153 жыл бұрын
@@robt8042 911's are just the ultimate Beetle-Evo. It was never a true Porsche, the old man hoped he would learn something when he committed "Butzi's Mistake" - failing upward (sorta). The 944's are the Porsche-fication of the 924 Volkswagen (which was built for Porsche by Audi - incest is the best). The 951 was/is awesome. The 928 was the first clean-sheet Porsche, and the Boxster, Pepper, Pana, etc kept Porsche solvent, so the 911 millstone can be kept alive for some reason. As a Porsche owner, I haven't been able to figure out why in 40 years...

Hee. I've had a 944 on my list of possibilities a while. (I'm not on Facebook at all so not in the group.) It's a rear-drive hatchback with a nice gearbox and stuff. (And perhaps typically of gals, I'm looking for a nice experience driving around rather than bragging rights, so I'm more about suspension and balance than power. I'm starting to think I'd skip any going out of my way for pasha fabric in those, though, that seems to belong more in 928s cause those are more From 70's SPAAAAACE. :) I'm not really sure what I might find for a next project anyway. It'll likely be a target of opportunity when I do, anyway, either for a project or some beaterish thing to run around in while I made my *Volvo* the project. (I work too slowly these days to do much in a single day most days so that can be limiting. )

It does sound awesome. But that yeti seat cover. Yikes!

Now I'm thinking of my favorite cheesy seat-cover material, namely Navajo-style horse blanket, and that might actually be pretty cool in one of those 944s where Casey put pasha. (Cause sure, I hire upholsterers all the time, really.... ;) )

Honestly if you want the driving experience of a 911 and don't want to pay the donaros. SW20 MR2 turbo can't be beat. Almost a 40-60 weight distribution. Bang it off the revlimiter. Slip the clutch. They really don't give a F. It a Toyota. And the Turbo's come with one of the most overbuilt drive trains of any sports car from the 90s. Apparently the head gasket is the weakest link and will go when your pushing low 300whp. But Trans will take almost 400whp on a stock clutch and gears that's more than double stock power numbers. It's non interference belt driven 4 banger so really not unlikely to grenade. Seen em driving well with 200k on the odometer. People forget toyota was the king of the 4 cylinders before honda made the K series. 4age and 3sge are great motors as well and came in non turbo or earlier generation cars. Buy em while their still cheep cause they are going up in price fast! I found one with 70k miles. Great daily! Lot's of cargo room and fast enough to have fun without killing yourself. They get a bad wrap for the lift off oversteer. All rear weight biased cars have that attribute even 911s. Once you learn to tame the beast it is one of the most rewarding and fun cars to drive! Plus it will pull over 1g from a still launch that's the same as a vspec r34 gtr. Always fun! Kudos on your 944, fun sounding car!
