WTF? Women can make their own decisions, they do not "need to be controlled by men" (jesus that phrase makes me ill to type) Sex-workers being valid doesn't make everyone in the exchange valid. This isn't having it both ways it's looking at two sides of the same coin. Sex-workers are valid and are free to do that and the customer is exploitative, like literally. The customer is paying them for sex, that is exploitation under capitalism. It would be better if sex-workers could do it just because they wanted to and not because it was the only viable path to making money that they saw. There is no need for "control" here. Sex-workers aren't out of control because they are sex-workers. That implies some moral or personal like problem that needs to be kept in check which there isn't one. If that's what someone wants to do for work, they can do that. But if someone feels like they need to to survive that's gross. The fact that Dave is only looking at this as if in a vacuum is gross, he seems to think that there can be no economic, or social factors that he could possibly be exploiting if they agree to it. Like that is such a gross, simplistic understanding of what consent is. And it's not even that consent is complicated, it's just not black and white all the time. when I was 19, I had moved to a new city and wanted to find friends. I met a girl who was still in high school...I can't remember if she was 16, almost 17 or 17, almost 18. Either way, it was no more than a 3 year difference and I had just moved out after graduating high school...we ended up getting crushes on each other but nothing ever came of it. Honestly...even then...it felt weird and off in some way to be even trying to date a high schooler. Dave's lack of understanding is wild to me, how can you not understand that going after people 15-25 years younger than you is creepy? It's a problem of relativity, like Jake correctly says a person who's 18 and fresh out of or possibly still in high school doesn't have real life experience. They probably haven't lived on their own or worked a serious job, they're above the age of majority, but they're not much of an adult, that's the issue in question. A person will have to be some amount of time above the age of majority to have lived in a world outside of school before they can become a mature person (this is also why I think it's weird we as a country try to get people fresh out of high school and straight in to college (and take on thousands in debt) without like a gap year or 2 because who really knows what they want to do with their life at 18). A person fresh out of school is not going to be an adult. If everyone did a 4 year degree at a government funded college and it was normalized to do that straight out of high school while they still lived with their parents I would call it a little sus to want to date 22 year olds as someone in their late 20s to early 30s, the age gap would be smaller sure, but the experience gap would be in effect at least similar.
