I need to tow about 7,000 lbs every day for 3-4 weeks a year at harvest time (mid August-early Sept.), but the buyer is only 25- 35 miles away from my fields. Sounds like this would work quite well.

Patiently waiting for a range extender model. Think that will be a sweet spot until such time that battery density and charge times improve.

I looked up the cost of a typically equipped F150, it’s just under $60k. The Limited, the most expensive trim level, is over $80k. The Lightning is priced just right if you ask me.

I think the main issue isn’t how/what the truck can tow, but that when it does what is expected of a truck (tow/haul), the depreciated range and the 150-200v recharge rate is unacceptably mediocre. If you frequently travel a long distance with a load, the constant long recharge rates sound frustrating to get anywhere. I love the idea of a lightning pickup, but if you need to do long distance travel, probably better to buy a hybrid F-150 that takes minutes to fill and go, rather than a electric F-150 that will need 30-45mins every 125 miles.

People also have a lot of bias and are scared of change (especially when they feel it’s being forced upon them). Can’t tell you how many comments I’ve seen about EVs being susceptible to being shut down remotely by “the man” when that type of technology is already in many cars regardless of powertrain. Good overview here, EVs aren’t for everyone yet (or may never be for some) but still this first iteration shows some considerable promise for the typical or casual consumer.

As with all things in life; you're only as good as your weakest link... and in this case with the F150 Lightning, it's the battery over range.

If you are towing a medium to large RV, in the mountains, you are lucky to get 100 miles of range, probably less. That's with new batteries. When your truck is 3 years old the range will be even less. And when you are in the mountains where are you going to recharge? And how much will new batteries cost in 5 or so years? My F150 will go 700 miles with a light load, and 400 miles towing a trailer. It takes 5 minutes to fill up at any gas station. And it will continue to do so for 10 or 20 plus years with no expensive maintenance.

Most people who bought a RV or boat do not tow them short distances around town. The whole point of buying something like that is getting away from the city and the crowds, going off into wild and remote places for long trips. The battery tech just doesn't provide the range we need yet, and charge times are too long if they even have chargers available. When I go on my fishing trip, its a 4 hour drive with an 8k lb boat and crossing 2 mountain ranges to get to an indian reservation for about a week. There isn't even a place to buy simple household goods like a hair dryer within 40 miles, they certainly don't have EV chargers there. As of now, electric trucks are made for people who buy trucks that they don't actually need. It's for the brodozer crowd.

Hey Einstein let us know how tow Ford f150 ev from field or dirt ! It’s Ford not Mercedes right?? So I hope we could just hook 🪝 it on bumper and go 100-200 mile if it’s needed and charge later on with no any problem???

Its biggest weakness isn't range, it's the insane price. $60k+ starting price, almost $84k for the cheapest Long Range version. Even if you didn't care as much about range and charge times, you can buy a gas truck for half the price of a Long Range. Not having to worry about range, infrastructure and charging time are just side benefits.

If you build a comparable ICE F-150 (crew cab, similar feature set) you'll be surprised at how much a regular F-150 costs. You can't look at a single cab, 2WD work truck starting price when comparing to a Lightning. Nevermind the Lightning is twice as quick, has the huge front trunk, and an on board generator.

I want to pull a 5,000 pound travel trailer up and down 5-10% grade hills in and out of WV and on relatively level ground thereafter over a period of about two weeks. The Lightning would do the job nicely if charging were not a problem and the cost of the vehicle were perhaps a little lower. I don't know whether a standard 150 would work well even though they will handle 8,000 to 9,000 pounds on paper; so I may need a 250 to do the job if I go with an internal combustion engine. If so, the Lightning would become more appealing because of price considerations. But if I go for a 250, I think I might more likely go for a RAM 2500. I think I could get more engine for my money with RAM. I haven't priced anything, including the Lightning, in a while, so I may be way off; though, I've heard things here and there that leads me to believe the Lightning is now way over my budget.

Reduced towing range will matter less once the charging infrastructure improves. D/C fast chargers have to be available within 25 miles of any point on a highway.

@@irfanhusein1445 takes way to long to charge to be practical for cross country, especially when towing. Charge times need to drop to 10 minutes for a 100% charge not this 20 to 80 in a hour or what ever nonsense it is and that's not going to happen any time soon...

You hit the nail on the head. It’s great for the people who buy trucks but don’t actually use them for their intended purposes. The crowd who drive around with their inefficient trucks and then complain about gas prices when they go up. Also, I hear all the time people bad mouth the lack of range while towing with an EV truck, but don’t take into account that gas power ones also lose a lot of range when towing. Bottom line is, that to me trucks are useless vehicles for other than their intended purposes. But if you must buy one to cosplay the lifestyle of a person who makes its living with their truck, then an EV pick-up is the way to go.

I have been saying this to everyone who tells me it's a dumb truck because they can't tow their huge camper across the country with it. Correct, it is a dumb truck FOR YOU. For me- a guy who does runs to Lowe's for lumber, the garden center for a bed full of stone and at most might tow from my local rental center- an ICE truck is a stupid truck.

The one problem with suburban cowboys buying a Lightning for larping is that, as an electric pickup, it doesn't have as much street cred as a Ford F150 or Dodge Ram.

Thanks for trying to be more nuanced about BEV Truck and Towing. Your test was with a fairly large camper. But here is my road trip with a small utility trailer, where I barely noticed any difference in efficiency: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4m8daCoe92Jl6M I was pulling a little 4'*8' utility trailer with maybe 2000Lbs total when we picked up the old ElecTrak Riding lawn mower and tiller attachment. This Entire Trip was 353.9Mi, 9 hours 25min, 2.1Mi/kWh, 3% Climate, 91% Driving, 3% Accessories, 3% Exterior Temp. Charging included: ~13kWh for the 90%-100% high SoC Start, +65.5kWh, +40.8kWh, +58.2kWh back to normal 90% SoC Start Point is 174.5kWh and 2.03Mi/kWh Round Trip.

Video starts off with everything that's really not even important about towing. Range is extremely important. Yes torque is important not so much horsepower. Yes Independence suspension rides better than solid axles but solid axles handle heavy loads better than independent suspension. That's why you don't see heavy duty trucks and light duty trucks with independent suspension ever. Most trucks come with four wheel drive so that's also a moot point. And you talk about trailer sway and swag. That's about how your loadout is not about the truck suspension. The biggest problem and trailer sway is people improperly loading their trailer truck or tongue weight. There's some simple rules to prevent sway. And once you have those rules in place you can even get wait distribution hitches with trailer sway control to handle open road winds where mother nature tries to win on your road trip. You should bring some long-term contractors onto your next video and have them drive a lightning for a while and let me know how that turns out.

when the constantly evolving technology in battery storage doubles the range (and it will) there will go the last argument against. When it triples range (and it will), no one will want an ICE truck.

When you can charge an EV in comparison to how long you fill a gasoline vehicle then I would buy one but not today. Hybrid is the way to go. Keep EV's in the city because that is where all the polition is.

You clearly don’t own one and have never driven one, don’t lie. I can say that mine has run very well, had only a few minor new model issues, and the torque is close to my 2019 F250 6.7L but more importantly…the lightning controls that torque sooo much better! No tire spin on wet payment, my F250 had a big problem with that as the turbos kick in. Is it for everyone? No, but it tows my 8,000lb boat to lake with no issues.
