In this video, I discuss the pressure point LI 4 and how to use it most effectively. Unknown to most people there are other acupressure points surrounding large intestine 4 and they should be used in conjunction with it. By applying acupressure at two or three points with LI 4 you can get better results.
Large intestine 4 is perhaps best known for relieving headaches but it is also effective for all kinds of pain. It may be used for abdominal pain, menstrual pain, joint pain, as well as neck, shoulder, and upper back pain.
This video focuses on how to use LI 4 for neck, shoulder, and upper back pain.
One way to understand how this point works is to know that it is located on the Superficial Back Arm Line (SBAL), which is a myofascial line. The muscles are connected through the fascia, and pressing on LI 4 can affect all the muscles on this myofascial line. The muscles on the SBAL include the forearm extensors, deltoid, and trapezius.
For pain located at the top of the trapezius and at the pressure point GB 21, LI 4 may be used, as it is able to affect the trapezius through the SBAL myo-fascia.
To get the best results with this point there are a few key things to know.
1. Use LI 4 with other points nearby and/or on the SBAL
2. Combine acupressure with movements and stretches
3. Use both static and dynamic massage techniques when stimulating LI 4
4. Use electricity or an electric acupressure pen
