I own an X7. It is more about luxury than the MDX which I looked at also. You save money on the MDX. It is sportier...more like a X5. But the X7 has way more luxury, more room, and the interior quality is a few grades above the Acura. I prefer the BMW inline 6 and transmission also. Both vehicles are good choices.

Mercedes, Audi, and BMW used to have an issue just like this when accelerating hard out of a turn with cars that had limited slip differentials. The issue was caused by the awd system and the ECU putting the drivetrain into "limp" mode for protection. The ECU would detect wheel spin and axle rotation ratios that were not compatible with each other and would put the car into limp mode until the car was stopped and allowed proper time for the drivetrain ratios to readjust(or when shifted out of drive). Putting it into neutral automatically readjusts the ratio. It's the same stress release you feel when your cars comes out of drive and goes into neutral or park. It's common on cars with torque vectoring. This issue is pretty much trying to prevent the damage that can occur to a drivetrain similar to taking your 4wd truck with locked diffs and driving in tight circles around a parking lot. You will blow your transfer case or diffs.

Good explanation. It seems a bit ridiculous to me to have mechanical problems and computerized solutions this complex in what is essentially a three row land-boat of a crossover. I guess it's a luxury/premium crossover, but it still seems to be getting ahead of itself. It'd be like a coffee machine stalling mid-pour because it needs to re-triangulate itself to the relative positions of Jupiter and Saturn.
@iggibars
@iggibars Жыл бұрын
@@0hypnotoad0 It's not a mechanical problem. It's a simple limitation of cars that drive all 4 wheels while suppling torque to them while they are all spinning at different rates. The higher the rotational speed, the less you can get away with this off-balance rotation between multiple wheels. It's what happens when you have an AWD system that can vector torque to one wheel at high speed while also limiting slip. This problem has existed for decades, we're just only used to seeing it in mechanical 4x4 systems like trucks and traditional SUVs, or high performance cars with torque vectoring AWD systems. Ever owned a truck? They have the same issue, only they don't have a smart enough drivetrain that can slip the drivetrain into neutral when it sense extreme ranges...they just crack open your transfer case or diffs instead.
@Nicedesk
@Nicedesk Жыл бұрын
Good point about binding. They do the same maneuver in almost every video (punch it from 0mph in a 90° turn) but other AWD systems do not seem to do this. MDX Defect?/intended preservation mode?/other brands will bind and eventually self destruct? Perhaps an issue with the rear end clutch pack stages not being able to gradually release, so the ecu just throws the trans into neutral for rear end preservation? It will be interesting to find out...

The gorilla grip is a great example, the horrendous butterfly keyboards are my favorite. I'm not talking physical damage or anything, it's the defects. Sure, getting another mac with a butterfly keyboard will temporarily get you back and working, but it didn't solve the issue. It's the unwillingness to accept that a product can have flaws and inability to admit them. I've dealt with Apple from an enterprise level as well as a few Honda products. They're the same. Honestly, that dealership experience is up to par with what I experienced with my old Honda Accord. It had a steering issue that put the wheel slightly out of alignment with the direction of the car, but whenever I told the dealership about it, their response was just “meh, we don’t see it,” or “meh, we test drove it and it’s fine.” Understandably, the dealership considers themselves the experts on the car-especially when they get a lot of consumers who don’t know anything at all. They aren’t used to car owners coming in wanting to be educated about their vehicle. They also aren’t used to having to spend more than the minimum amount of time on what they consider a “niche” issue. There’s no care like that anymore when they have tons of cars to go through in a day.

I had a similar experience with my 05 TL a few years ago. Car went into limp mode on a WOT pull onto the highway. had it towed to the dealership since it was a computer issue most likely and my local mechanic told me to. They rebooted the computer and couldn't repliate the issue, and charged me 200 bucks. 2 months later, same thing happens. I kew it wasn't a transmission issue because it was a manual and it still went into gear fine and the engine was running good as well. got myself a 15 dollar code reader on amazon, pulled the code and researched it on the good old forums. Ended up replacing the throttle position sensor myself and it solved the issue. It seems like issues that aren't immediately obvious to dealer techs get brushed off more often than not. It's unfortnate, but in those scenarios I've always relied on someone smarter than me figuring it out and posting to a forum. The internet can definitely be a great resource!

I have a new 2023 - and I have not encountered ANY transmission issues reported in this review. I use the wireless Apple Car Play 100% of the time. It links flawlessly without any cables and I appreciate the wireless charging. I have zero issues with the trackpad interface - I think it works perfectly well, and I never have to reach up to touch any screens and take my eyes off the road. As the reviewer stated, if you are using the Car Play - there is nothing wrong with this interface. The drivetrain is strong, the handling is amazing for an 3 row SUV, and the ergonomics are first rate. I agree with the reviewer - that it is truly a bargain compared the other 3 row luxury SUVs out there. Spectacular "Liquid Carbon" optional paint - far superior than the recent MB and INFINITIs we've had. Typical ACURA flawless fit and finish, and great styling. The ELS sound system is in a class by itself. I highly recommend the new MDX to anyone wanting a 1st class luxury SUV. You will not regret it. Your reasoning for the transmission logic issues is actually pretty accurate. Working for a medical transport company did fleet technician & we had lifted Dodge Caravans 2016+ and they would do the samething at half or more throttle is turning more than 10° despite being able to corner very well for the added height (highway ramps or curved entry ramps). Basically dropping into neutral and then once straight, accelerates like a soccer late for pickup. Probably programmed for it.

That transmission issue would easily get me killed or kill someone else unlucky enough to be behind me when I merge onto a fast road. This is absolutely going to get someone hurt or killed. They also program semi trucks to do the same thing. Contrary to popular belief, you can get a semi truck up to speed decently quick: Not with standing you're loaded super heavy. The computer sees it as hard acceleration and will stall you out in a intersection for half a second, before it accelerates. That why I'm pretty sure this is not a factory flaw, and has been implemented by some stupid effete weenie from the American division. As long as Honda/Acura keeps up this relationship I would never buy something where the R&D was done here in America, if I wanted disappointments I would buy only domestic vehicles..which is what Honda/Acura is according to their relationship.

I've had one of these (the "base" type s) for about a year now and put about 10k miles. Haven't encountered the transmission issue but I likely don't drive it as hard as these guys. It has been comfortable, sporty enough and practical for hauling 2 kids around. Overall very happy with it. Complaints are below: * The infotainment is shit, still get annoyed by it every day. * The transmission I am not particularly fond of the way it shifts. Not even talking about that neutral issue mentioned in the video. It is just annoying somehow. * The lane keep assist seems to be get confused sometimes which is annoying. * Oh there is one issue with a steering judder on start up when it drops into the setting. It is apparently a known issue and they will be replacing the steering column when I take it in. * I wish the seats were more supportive on the sides. * The wipers seems to have a mind of their own. Lot of lag responding to changes and either too fast or too slow.

Glad to hear this is (mostly) holding up. I came close to buying one of these after a test drive (inspired by your review!) ultimately I'm not sure the performance is where I want it to be for the one-car lifestyle, but that's more of a me problem than an acura problem. Everything other than driving like an asshole seems top notch at the price point. I'm curious to see where the gearbox issues end up, if that's common and not easily remedied it feels like a dealbreaker.

Regarding the transmission problem, that could be considered a safety issue. My guess is it is likely software related. When you do that specific action to make it repeatable, it just happens to be a scenario that wasn't programmed into the controller. problem with this car is not the car itself, but the Acura dealership and lease program. This thing is $75k with advance tech package even with no markup, however even leasing this thing is $950-1100 which puts it into the X3M, X4M, X5 M50, Macan S/GTS depending on options, etc. range. Financing a $75k car is also ridiculous in itself with the absurd interest rate right now. also keep in mind; performance wise this is similar to a X5 xdrive40i which is similarly priced, but you can get one of those for $250 cheaper a month on a lease.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. Service centers now (not all of course) don't bother getting technicians trained on mechanical skills and common sense troubleshooting. They hook up a scanner and if it doesn't spit out complete diagnosis for them, they say "no issues detected." Dude the issue is on video, what are you talking about? Had a similar thing with our used F150. Overheating, they try to tell me it's blown gasket that the tech sees visual external leaks, $5k quote. Meanwhile I throw in a $40 thermostat and back to normal temps. Come on, not everything can be read with a scanner. It's going to get much worse before it gets better, especially with hybrids and EVs becoming more prevalent.

Being an MDX owner. I've expeiranced some annoiance with the transmission. Once they switched from the 6 speed to the 9 speed in 2016 that transmission for me has had many issues. Horrible tuning, super jolty on shits in fact in the exact gears 2nd to 3rd especially at low speeds around 20-35 mph. I have had the transmission changed and after a while this issue continued to happen. If you look up the forums on the 2016 module this issue is rampant. Funny how the HUD showed 37mph when it shifted to neutral. Honestly I like my MDX a lot even for 2016 but man that transmission is such a weak point and a huge annoiance. It is a big factor for me that has made me look for other cars and seeing the 2023 modules still struggling with transmission issues is a huge disappointment. They REALLY need to get on this.

I drove the MDX Type S this week. It was like driving a computer running Windows 11 on only 16MB of RAM. I didn't attempt to induce the limp mode problem in a turn that you experienced, but there's a 1.5-second delay when pushing the gas pedal from any stop, regardless of whether the wheel's turned or not, that's maddening. Further, the comfort wasn't mind-boggling, and the acceleration certainly wasn't worth the additional $10K for the added performance and a few sexy badges. Just speculating, but I rebuilt a 3 speed ford ATX FLC once that did this, even more so on right turns, and it was an inherent design flaw of the fluid pickup on hard left and right turns causing the throttle body to momentarily run on low pressure and not build up enough fluid to engage a kickup. The solution wasn’t to actually modify the pickup but replace the engagement spring and ball in the throttle body with a stronger spring and a lighter ball. The ill-recommended solution throughout the 80’s for these FLC transmissions before Ford came up with a throttle body TSB was to overfill the transmission. While that fixes one problem it causes others, most notably eventually blowing out seals, so don’t do that. Eventually there was a modified filter that had a relocated pickup but on a hard enough turn it still slipped out of gear, so not a fix.

Is it possible the rev-hang is a feature? Akin to some "sport" modes where they do it for throttle response/sporty driving? We have a 2018 Mazda CX-9, and we cross shopped MDX. At the time Mazda's infotainment layout was better with the knob/touchscreen and screen location and CarPlay was available with a retrofit. No creaks/rattles on ours. CX-9 good for loafing around, and still fun when pushed (for an SUV and definitely a momentum vehicle). Certainly the new MDX Type-S is a league ahead, but I'm excited for the CX-90 and think it will once again be better value than the MDX. My bros. in law's 2017 MDX eats rear brakes, maybe a feature of the SH-AWD. I really hope you guys get to sit down with Mazda to go over the technical details of the CX-90.
