as a patient i found this very usefull and informative and yes they are clever people the doctors, i take my hat off to you all and say thankyou, My job is a "petroleum engineer". i have had AML6 for nearly a year now, it started with bleeding gums, teirdness i mean teird and a sore throat that wouldnt go so i had a blood test (i am needle phobic), 14hrs later im rushed into hospital and started on a course of chemo thearepy 7+3, this went on for 6-8mths, i cant remember for certain as it happened so quick and is a lot to take on board BUT the 1st lot of chemo opened a can of worms which took about 10 days to diagnose, i went sceptic/ceptisemia blood piosening, (pardon my grammer), but it was caused by the remains of an old absys in my gum, 6x teeth out and all cleared up within 48hrs, anyway a lot of chemo later then i was refered for stem cell transplatation, 1x week of full TBI total body iradication, then on the 1/11/13 the transplant all went well but the mental side of it all was overwhelming for me, the thought of a part of someone else being pumped into me was hard (but all in the head and nothing to worry about). its now 24/02/14 and in remission at the minute and i have been lucky iv had no infections/sickness anti rejection drugs are reduced each week and about 4 weeks time i should be drug free, and so far so good and thats the way i intend to stay. but it is mentally draining and it hasnt sunk in yet. that is my journey in brief but you will be amazed at what your body can take and cope with..... probably waffling on but untill youve had any type of life treatning cancer you wouldnt understand.... if you have AML it is scary but you are in good hands where ever you are I NOW HAVE A BUCKET LIST AND IM GONA DO THEM ALL..... TWICE, happy days to come

Unfortunately my son passed away last week due to Rush medications done by The doctor. They were not transparent to us. And very katelt told us my sons Will die soon. I knew as a Mother that doctors dis not do what should be done carefully. They just rushed him in antibiotic and chemo. I know there some faul play and then washed their hands and thats it. Sorry but not all doctors are fair enough to help 😭😭😭

From this doctor it sounds AML is not so terrible, so it is only the sickest AML who need a transplant .

thumbed up by mistake, and this is not ment to be a bitchy comment either, but no its not so terrible if you like bone marrow tests every few weeks and constant needles and pipes being pushed into you, gallons of fluids and drugs pumped into you, loosing all your hair, and weight because you have no taste and trying to eat with no taste was no easy task for me, but all this becomes routine just another day at the office lol, and thats if you dont pick up any bugs or infections, but it depends how aggressive and the type of AML you have, in my case the chemo did not do its job everytime it started to come back, so a stem cell transplant was the only way for me, and its all been good iv recently had a top up of DLI (donor lymphocyte infusion) which is normal and yes as mine were fresh at transplant, the rest was frozen and frozen cells DO make you smell of sweet corn hehe but it doesn't last for long. anyway AML is serious and life threatening but any cancer is a rough ride, physically and mentally you just need to stay and think positive, easy for me to say now but its something you have to do. if you hav'nt had it, its so hard to comprehend the stress and as for a loved one who has no choice but to sit and watch whilst all this is happening the pain the not knowing or understanding must be mind blowing so hats off to our partners wives husbands, there im waffling again lol there is light at the end of the tunnel

12/27/2020: Very informative, but still 7 years out of date: is there a more recent update re: new treatments, better prognoses, etc? I was diagnosed in 2018 with MDS, anemia after 6+ years of Rituxan'based therapy for Agent Orange exposure in 1968 [lymphoma diagnosed in 2011]. Not looking forward to having AML, already told my VA oncologist that I am 76 and not interested in BMT/Bone Marrow Transplant rigamarole. Occasional future blood transfusions, 50+ years of healthy diet, and a good attitude are my weapons, "come what may."

My daughter in law was diagnosed 4 weeks ago. She is home for 2 weeks. They say she will return and say in hospital 3 in and 2 out until October. What is the best thing to do besides support. They have 2 small grand children 5 and 7 yes old whom she is very protective and she is very independent. So while she is at home what can i do. Did anyone juice or protein drinks or what did you want someone to help you with but you didn't want to ask. I would appreciate any advice to help her. This is just a temporary normal. Just need to make it to remission.
