Fun fact. Those stereotypical African tribes that live in the wilderness with the animal hides and no shoes? Those actually are pretty well off. The poverty problem comes from the modern African cities that attempted to urbanise without having the necessary provisions to maintain an urban city. Those people don't need food (okay, maybe some of them do) as much as they need the means to successfully assimilate an industry/services sector to their economy.

More like: cities have lots of opportunity and poor village farmers want to get in on the action but can't afford a house in the city so they build their own on the outskirts. Thousands of people do this and boom. Huge slum. But they aren't exactly in need of anything, except maybe some decent police.

I've seen some boards where people have pointed out problems like this, and the predominate attitude is "Oh be quiet. You're just complaining because it makes you feel better about not doing anything to help make this world a better place. At least these people are doing something; and that's ALWAYS better than doing nothing." No, no its not. It's easy to contribute to something to get a quick warm fuzzy feeling, but it takes time and research to know how to get involved in a way that really does help instead of unintentionally causing damage.

Agreed. I mean half the time people who say such phrases are the same individuals who would be extremely defensive if you were to suggest that decades of European imperialism contributed to the poverty in developing nations we see today. Seven years later and Mr. Beast is in the middle of a controversy for making a video for publicity where he donates shoes to a random village to fuel his brand image. Nearly a decade later and NOTHING has changed, but at least we've learned to wise up about these types of things a bit. I just hope more people can find this clip and share it around to help explain exactly why this is an issue while pointing people towards actual real solutions to the actual problems these poverty-stricken African cities have to deal with.

OK this is one that I actually agree with. This is the basic concept of "if you give a man fish, he'll eat for a day but if you teach him how to fish, he will eat for the rest of his life." My friends in Africa tell me about this all the time. People in Africa actually want to work to make a living . This is why it's a hard concept for people to grasp in America.

People don't understand that it's more complicated than that. Self-sustainability isn't necessarily a good thing. In a global economy it's better to be specialized. All the Nations are connected by trade. If Person A in Country A can produce 1000 shoes an hour and Person B in Country B can produce 5 an hour person B would be wasting they're time trying to make shoes when instead they could do something else and generate more value.

It is similar to how people don't approach homelessness properly as well-the most effective programs and measures against homelessness are the ones that give people the help they need to help themselves- plenty of charities do great work getting people food, clothing and other necessities, but to actually help people get out of that situation you need to give them access to the tools to do so. Adam goes over it briefly in the episode where he is homeless- amongst other housing issues- Utah has a program that provides housing, which gives people less to worry about in surviving day to day, and a permanent address, so they can more easily find themselves a job. it has been a while so I might be remembering things wrong though

As an African living in Africa this is so true! What America does is take the worst situation and make it seem like it's like that everywhere. It's like if I go and take pictures of slums in America , the dirtiest places and post unemployment rates, everyone won't think America is so perfect. I'm not saying Africa is perfect, we're just not what America would consider happiness. We have diseases sure, but what place doesn't and poverty is a big problem. Constant electricity is a book g problem, but guess what? People have adapted to that, they don't need constant electricity to be happy, personally most people I know are living happily without 24/7 electricity. And yes some of our children are starving and needy and we are not helpless. Our government does have charities trying to help these people. Americans go on and on, finding fault in every other country and then their own (sorry I know this is a generalisation). And oh well this has become a rant. I love Adam ruins everything!

Right? I thought it was weird they talked about the guys trip to Argentina 1:15 then she brings up Africa? Maybe she was going for a different point but it's also weird how Africa is just always thought of as how she pictured it. The attempted to correlate them by poverty (which is somewhat offensive but i get it) but worse her character just assumes the whole Continent is poor living in shacks. I say character because she is just portraying a role and most likely does not have the same views as the character. My last issue, she's saying that and she's a teacher. Is she going to teach them Africa is a hut village instead of a whole Continent? (Edit: meant Continent. Not country. My apologies) But let's all remember, they're just trying to inform us and most likely mean no harm. But this was a trigger issue.

Sure, but what are the further implications of giving shoes? After these children have become adults they no longer receive shoes and since they were unable to build up calluses they are now more open to infections that could potentially lead to death. (Sorry, I did not mean to jump on my soap box, I know many appreciate the thought of helping others, we just need to ask ourselves is this the right way)

Very good video. I hope that we understand that helping others isn't simple. We need to listen to those in need to understand their problems, and GOSH DARN IT, economics and social sciences matter. Mosquito nets aren't a complete waste, but we can distribute them in a better fashion in order to maximize their benefits. We can learn from our successes and failures, but most of all we can't give up. Poor people are still people, and sometimes the best way to help someone (from the corner store to the entrepreneur in Africa) is to buy something from them, so that they can, in turn, feed their families and buy something from another local.

+cablooshki Yeah I agree. Even though it can partly promote illegitimate business models. Think about the textile industry in Banglades for example, the working conditions and the wages are awful but the booming textile industry does make wealth flow into the country which will eventually get to the workers benefit in the same way as the western world has. It was only a hundred years ago that many western europeans had a similar situation but look at the improvements that has been done since then! Because it will only be worse for them if you raze their workplaces so that the 40 million people who are working in those factory become unemployed. If you call their current situation misery so will that be nowhere near the amount of poverty that will come in that case. It would be a better idea to promote unions and education as that is what improves the situation on a long term scale.

People need to realize, giving stuff to others, wether shoes kids in Africa, or 20 bucks to the panhandler at the intersection, is not doing anyone any good. You help people, that ask for it, also. Not because you FEEL they need it. But, you only HELP them, not, do it for them. That way, once your liberal ass has gotten bored with that problem, and on to the next popular crisis, the people, you've abandoned, will know how to keep the momentum going. Otherwise you're only doing it, for yourself, to feel good.

+cablooshki "human welfare or humane conditions, as well as environmental conditions" means imposing Western standards on economies that haven't worked up to them yet. Trying to shotcut the process only impedes their ability to get there at all.

Jesse Fortner Well, apparently I'm not the only one that thinks child labor and environmental concerns should be an issue - while the devil is in the details, it seems that the recently negotiated TPP will have some provisions and some restrictions for those causes. Also, perhaps workers making my shirts shouldn't have to worry about the building they work in crashing around them - that seems like it should be non-negotiable.

The shoes provide support for the feet which is needed in these scenarios. But I'm assuming the children these shoes are being donated to dont live in a city... So you're right! They dont need them.

+jeroen berendsen What happens to the companies that screw people over? They go out of business a few years, or even mere months after they make all that extra money for just a short period, because people don't like being screwed over. Corporations care about profit, certainly, but the smart ones care about long-term profit. For that reason, reputation is key. If almost everybody in one industry is doing business in a crooked way for years and investigations reveal this, the corporations that aren't screwing all the consumers over suddenly get a rise in sales and many, many more loyal customers when the other corporations take a massive hit or even shut down because of this hit to their reputation. Screwing people over for short-term profit margins is not a smart business strategy. The triple bottom line _is_ a smart business strategy. It's also becoming far more prevalent in contemporary society as the years wear on; consumers are more aware and more caring, while corporations are more transparent and have less power.

I bought a pair of Tom‘s without knowing the company & feel bad about it now. Only reading the remark in the shoes itself, I assumed they would give the second pair to someone in the US /Western countries that struggles and needs, but can‘t afford new shoes. That might make more sense - giving teachers or parents the chance to request shoes for example or helping college students that are poor due to their debts.

.......I'm just going to say this if don't want to listen fine. Every country has a poverty issue. It is understandably more dominate in the Middle East, Africa and Asia due to internal power struggles. But, putting our hand in the cookie jar is giving hope to a dead family. What I'm about to say may sound heartless and sociopathic; their deaths are the fault of the country helping them, the parents who bore them without the necessary care needed, and is their problem. Countries in a big economic hole will not survive unless the helping country leaves and they figure out how to walk away from their loved ones or sustain a economic growth if they can't they will continue to die. it's hard decision and its one that a very good Somalian freind of mine had to make. you tell him he had a better choice, "why didn't you save your family." is the same as "die with your family" in those countries.

I’ve even seen commercials saying “if you buy a new car, we’ll donate $200 to some charity!” Big whoop! If a company is only “charitable” if you BUY something from them, that’s not charity. That’s lining their own pockets while trying to make you think they’re SO KIND!

They care about *JOBS* The water, food and shelter are not upto the first world standards, but they are present. Humans once lived by drinking swamp water, humans lived by sleeping in caves. Blissful, that's not actually too far off the bat. To overly simplify it, people from America are more willing to "help" the poor in foreign countries that seem exciting and exotic to them and have gross poverty porn surrounding them. So they would, for example, send aid to the poor of Uganda (African culture), Argentina (Latin American culture) or Greece (Ancient Greece alure) but they probably wouldn't send aid to the poor of Japan, Germany or Australia.
@cameronmcallister7606

It is also a point that, Americans view poor Americans as lazy, as if living in a rich country means you cannot be poor, but in these far away countries, they see them as not at fault, and that it is the problem of the climate, or terrible governments.
