Okay, you’re officially brilliant!!! Just ordered 3 for my crew. It’s a custom leather holster for your tape measure!!! So the worst thing one could do in the engine room of a faired and class-A finished painted custom yacht engine room is to drop one’s tape. Seriously - I love this. And it’s Quick Draw McGraw :) That’s a nod to Hannah Barbara for you youngins. If you could cover the rest of it with a flap so it makes no scratches to finished veneer while you’re walking down a tight hallway bumping into things that would be the ultimate.

I saw a vid featuring a triangular leather wrap for keys, with a single bronze snap closure. Something like that, stitched to the leather tab from behind could work. Or a design utilizing the tapes pre-installed clip? Or, for a different shape, have an additional oversized rectangle of leather with two snaps, for optional removal, that cradles the tape like a sling. Might have to play around with this myself, just for kicks. Like Laura said, “If you want, make one!”👍🏻

7:17 That's a pretty much universal thing. Remember sitting in the drive through of some fast food spot and the line was taking AGES. Ahead of me was this beat up work truck with random bits and tool boxes in the bed. Was zoning out waiting for them to move when I noticed something sticking out of the drivers side window. Was a tape measure. Then out of the passenger side? Same thing. Was hilarious watching each one slowly creep out. Few inches at a time and ya could see the guys in the cab turning to look at the other when it was his turn to risk another extension. Car behind me must have noticed it too cause when the drivers side tape finally collapsed I heard a cheer and an "awww!".

I love the folding rulers. Only thing I don’t like is that the 2 meter versions are a bit bulky. So I have 1 meter versions in my shop. I use them for precise short distance stuff and tapes for longer measurements
@NickUncommonАй бұрын
@@laurakampf the half meter folding ruler on my keychain gets replaced once the hinges are so worn out, that it unfolds on its own. Still have one from my dad, that I broke as a little kid not knowing how to work the hinges properly yet. He had brough t one back from Canada, which he used and the paint started peeling off so some areas were unuseable. I dont have as many memories of tape measures. But we sure played the "how far can I get the tape out without collapsing" game. And snapping back with the fingers in the way caused several cuts, too.
@chriscluver1940Ай бұрын
@@ShaneB666 Assume they're talking about the folding end-over-end kind, not the smaller 24 inch kind. I hear that european carpenters (germany, netherlands, etc) use them a lot b/c they're decently cheap, light, don't wear out like plastic-coated metal tapes can, can do vertical or angled measurements easier, and can open a beer way easier.

I LOVE tape measures! One of my favorites I keep in my pocket all the time. It's actually made by Zippo and was made for Deutz (German Deisel Engines) when I worked here as a Warranty Engineer in the US operation (Atlanta) in the '80s. 6' tape, imperial and metric. As far as I know only employees got them. About the size of the lower part of a Zippo lighter (which I also carry constantly). Hey, Engineers have to carry tools ...

Seeing your designs in the wild! Right out of high school in the late 80s I landed a job doing color separations for a print company in TN. Back in the days of using exactos and rubylith. I did a series of boxer shorts licensed with college sports teams. I was only there for about six months. After that I landed a job in Key West checking mini bars at the Hyatt. Private butler, ha ha! Great title. I went into a room one morning and saw a pair of boxers lying on a bed. Had to check the label. It was my print! Not my design, but I made it happen! It was very exciting, but I was glad no one caught me checking out their boxers! Still a good feeling!

Menard's isn't exactly a bastion of high end tools, but they have a game changing yoyo. It has a reverse lock. You pull the tape out, and it locks it out to where you stopped pulling, and stays extended. Just the act of pulling it out, no button sliding/pushing. Then when done, you press a perfectly tensioned button to retract the tape.

My favorite tape is a LeverLock (I think sold by Craftsman years ago). It automatically locks, and you press the lever on the bottom to release the tape. I have seen something similar recently, so some on may finally have realized that this is a GREAT idea.
@Blutzen2 ай бұрын
My Dad had like six different tape measures in his tool box when I was growing up, but the one he _always_ reached for was his LeverLock, and I never understood why anybody would ever use a _manually_ locking tape measure when the auto-locking ones were an option. One of the first things I bought when I was old enough to start buying my own tools was an auto-locking tape measure, but it's a Komelon "SelfLock" instead of the LeverLock, with a thumb button on the top to disengage the lock because, I assume, the LeverLock is a patented design.
