I'm glad to see that Adam's got the cameraman back in the shop, but to be honest, I love the style of the videos that he's been filming in lock down. I think it would be really cool if filming on his phone just became a part of the One-Day-Builds series. It gives them a lot more of Adam's personality, which works very well with that content since the whole video is also devoted to Adam's creation. Just a thought. Edit: Bro, Adam's mask is designed with the same pattern as a NASA Snoopy cap! That's so cool!

I agree. Having a person dedicated to thinking about what's visible on camera can be great, but I personally think that static tripod shots suit this channel much better. Adam, a few hints on how to use those suits (I work in semiconductor, we use similar suits): As others have noted - make sure the fan unit has a proper filter installed (HEPA filter!) - otherwise it would make things worse for the one wearing it. You need to clean/disinfect/exchange the filter after every use if you take this serious - less often if you just "play", but don't let it simmer for months - filters are a breeding ground for bacteria. For "cosplay" you don't have to buy actual medical filters, there are vacuum cleaner filters that are HEPA level. You also want to put a clip on your battery - if you just tuck it into the belt you'll lose it. (Actual medical workers: please correct me if I'm wrong on this!) You wear the hoodie into the suit, not on top of the suit - put on the hood first, then the suit, make sure the material is tucked in, last add the fan unit. Have someone (wearing a mask) help you with the hood and the fan (with some experience you can do it yourself, but it is still easier to help each other). Booties: those wear down within a relatively short time - even on smooth floors. You can buy new ones online - but they are usually blue, not yellow. They are there to keep infectious particles and/or chemicals away from your shoes and to keep your shoes from spreading outside "dirt" into the protected environment. If you want something more durable: wear white boots (clean rooms and isolation environments often have their own set of boots for workers) - that's also much safer than wearing booties, which sometimes slip. Right now contamination by shoes is not a real concern for us normal folk, so please don't order hundreds of booties, lab workers need them more urgently. There are as many rules on how to wear the gloves as there are environments. In the movie they taped them down (appropriate for the danger level). Gloves are usually single-use - for good reason - wear them for two hours and you know why you don't want to wear that pair ever again. Some people (like me) like to wear thin cotton gloves under the rubber gloves - this makes the sweating less icky (it'll never feel nice). If you are concerned about being able to handle tools like this - call Cmdr. Chris H. - he'll tell you how easy you have it with those gloves! Challenge: try to type a report on a laptop in those gloves (no mouse, keyboard and touchpad only)... ;) Don't wear street clothes under the suit - T-shirt and thin jogging pants are much more comfortable. Try to use cotton - more comfy than synthetics. If you are slightly cold in your under clothes, then you'll be comfortable in the suit.

I didn’t want to make a comment going, “I have absolutely no experience in this, I’m just some asshole on the internet who thinks he knows better, but I feel like the hood should be inside the collar.” And now I don’t have to, because I get to be the asshole on the internet responding to someone else’s comment and going, “yeah, I totally knew that,” when in fact I was just guessing.
@KonradTheWizzard4 жыл бұрын
@@General_Nothing Good guess though! ;) To be fair to Adam: this is an easy mistake to make - when you put on a suit for the first time it feels totally right to cover the suit collar with the hood. You say that the positive pressure makes it COVID-safe, just popping in to clarify that this serves the opposite function of a cloth mask: A suit like this (assuming it actually works, which seems likely) is PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and is therefore designed to protect the wearer by pulling in air through a filter or series of filters. If it's like the PAPRs (Powered Air Purifying Respirators) I've used at work, you can have different filters for different purposes, like protection from specific gases or general particulates. This is the kind of thing you'd wear if you were in a high-risk environment and didn't want to get contaminated/infected, but the positive pressure system in the suit system will allow air to leak out (this acts as a barrier, since airflow will always be from inside the suit to outside due to pressure differential). I doubt this will pose any significant viral loading threat even if the wearer is sick or a carrier, since the pressure differential and therefore airflow rate is small, but it would be nonzero. A cloth mask, on the other hand, is useful for diffusing the air coming out of the wearer's snotholes and reducing the amount of potentially virus-laden droplets that reach the environment.
@PaulMcCannWebBuilder4 жыл бұрын
Seconded, (as one who's worn a MSA PAPR with HEPA filters, all day, on many a worksite removing asbestos, back in the day.) Postive pressure breathing systems protect you from the environment, not the other way around, so they probably won't let you on an airplane with one of these. Nevermind the panic it'd cause, or the lack of a USB plug on that fan.
@ResidualSelfImage3 жыл бұрын
A real PAPR will cost about 900 to 1800 dollars way too expensive for a cosplay. The disposable filter on a PAPR will cost about 50 to 100 ...as a cosplay costume it really looks cool though.

Tested's camera operators seem to care more about fiddling with the camera and trying to show off (ex., constant zooming in and out, shooting with an f/2.8 aperture to get blurry backgrounds, but being so bad at manual focus that they blur all the important things instead) than with actually *showing the work being done,* which is kind of the point of maker videos.

I'm sure Adam is thrilled to have his Cameraman back, but there was something about the style of video when he filmed himself that was so much more personal. @gruntlife50554 жыл бұрын
As a CBRN specialist I see 2 things wrong with this video, the PAPR unit is only a fan and does not have a CBRN rated filter, but that could be easily converted, and I see user error with with Adam because he did not tuck the hood of the helmet into the suit which would keep him exposed to the outside elements, other than those things, the suit could be rated for a CBRN environment as long as the material for the suit it water proof and airtight and is strong that it won’t rip if you trip

Oh cool, my dad worked on Outbreak as the first unit dolly grip. He has some fun stories from shooting that. I love the suit by the way! He has said that the current situation is rather coincidental for him. Since he "retired" from working on set he now works for IATSE in Safety and Training and has been very busy since March helping to prepare the industry to get back to work in a safe way while the pandemic is on going. One of the short stories I could share right now is a rather stressful dolly move he had to make for the scene in the overcrowded Cedar Creek hospital. It required him to push a 1000lb camera dolly with the operator and focus puller sitting on it (about 500lbs of camera dolly, camera and equipment, plus the weight of the operator and focus puller) which was not on track and the wheels would be within inches of the barefoot extras playing sick hospital patients. The move actually had to be choreographed with the background actors so that they could flatten themselves against the walls as soon as they were out of shot. I think there were a few other interesting stories, if there is interest I'll ask him to remind me of them.

@assassinlexx Yeah, that report is understood to be a politically-motivated lowball from the CDC. Low COVID-19 counts and lack of mass testing and tracing bork the numbers lower; the real rate is likely 0.5% or higher. Plus, a low fatality rate doesn't mean much if millions are getting infected. I know you're not okay with a quarter-million+ deaths. We can do better, but folks need to step up, grow up, and take some of that "individual responsibility" folks are always droning on about in this country. And to address your throwaway comment: half a million people across the United States are currently without a roof over their heads. A society doesn't malfunction this badly unless strong cultural and governmental forces are causing it to happen. Hundreds of thousands of people, millions of souls over the course of five decades, did not just wake up one day and decide that a meth habit and a dangerous home on the streets was the life for them. We can do better. If you want to cast blame, look in the mirror. You allowed this. We all did.

In fact it makes it worse if you’re sick because the positive pressure will actively eject your fluids. So stay safe and always monitor for symptoms!

Adam goes outside in the PPE suit and tells the first person he sees on the street, "If you want to live, come with me!"

Yep, I can’t be the only one missing the scene of him waiting in line at the coffee shop.

I recently rewatched outbreak and it’s shocking how many similarities there are to what we’re experiencing now.

This reminded of the Myth Busters episode where they Adam pretend to have a cold but used dye to keep track of how far things spread and the ned result was crazy.

I absolutely love the fact he has Serenity on the exit.

The cameraman is moving way too much with his camera, I'd much prefer static shots at this point

I'd been saying that for ages, I'm glad we got to see some videos made by Adam (who understands how to frame things and properly and where he should focus to), so that people see how much better they are. Adam may not be at the level of This Old Tony (who does the best shots / editing in KZbin's "maker community", IMO), but he still manages to film things much better than anyone else working for Tested.

You'd think if they are actually paying a camera operator, they could employ a competent one. Someone needs to superglue the zoom controls on the camera, this dude just can't help himself.

Let's just say that we all have no choice but to notice every wiggle-jiggle of the camera work. Welcome back team!

I want to see Savage just running errands in that suit

This is where we learn that Adam Savage has become the new Orson Welles, by walking out into the streets of San Fran wearing a hazmat suit leading to public panic and confusion!

Adam Savage is the grown up-ten year old we all wish we could be.

Well, positive pressure is handy for self protection though less good for source control which is most of what we're wearing masks for... I'd totally like one too though, even if it wasn't fancy movie prop stuff.
