@kezadrone6 жыл бұрын
Love how they all get into position like it's an instinct, then to life the puppet comes ,amazing.
@Corristo898 жыл бұрын
Seeing those puppets move is so strangely organic and human. You know it's just a bunch of glued foam, fake fur and felt, but the movements and the design make them seem like actual living beings. This is why Yoda from the original Star Wars trilogy is a billion times more relatable and organic than the CGI Yoda from the prequels. And actors interacting with puppets can actually react to something in front of them, which is being driven by another human, while the puppet is basically just a representation of another actor. You can't interact with a CGI character because there's nothing there. The only time I really saw a movie perfect that synthesis was in LotR, where Andy Serkis actually played Gollum in a motion capturing suit and spoke the lines. All they did was replace him with Gollum, but the actor's interaction with the CGI Gollum was exactly like it would be with a real character.

CGI is a powerful tool that can create amazing things in the right contexts, but the technology is not at a point where actors and actresses can treat CGI elements and placeholders as real characters, like puppets. Even though Thanos in _Avengers: Infinity War_ and _Avengers:Endgame_ was really impressive and his interactions in each scene feel so lifelike, his CGI was an exception to the norm. The way Mark Hamill would have interacted with a stand-in prop for a CGI Yoda would probably have felt less tangible compared to how he interacted with a physical Yoda puppet. Plus, we have the example of Baby Yoda - I doubt a CGI stand-in would have been able to capture people the way a cute, small, and organically moving puppet did.

OK there's no way this gets seen but... 29:15. If you made them longer intentionally, bore a hole into the centre of the foam and insert a metal rod with a couple of finger slings on the end that protrude back into the inside of the skull... you could have rigged a wire catch that tilts each eye a certain amount in a certain direction and had a cool alien-like movement (in/out, both in/both out, one in/one out etc) from the eye stalks.

Well, I'm late to the party. *shrug* What would've been a GREAT eye mech would've been if you could make the eyestalks turn, so you could make Finn crosseyed or looking out to both sides instead. I think that would've added to that alien idea a lot, plus it would've been a much simpler mechanism to create, though it would depend on where the wire loops would end up on your hand. (Maybe it would've been a middle finger pull, down to your hand.) I dunno, I'm not a puppet maker, but this video seriously inspires me. It'd be cool to work as an assistant in a puppet workshop. The time I spent as a puppeteer and maker was very much like this. The video brought back some fun memories.

Thank you. I love puppets and watching them being created. I had the honor of watching Scott Land (lead puppeteer for Team America) make his marionettes in his Las Vegas shop.... I'm not creative but I like how the builders touch the puppets and you can see how much they enjoy their own creations.

I'm sorry, is the shop you were in Newark, Ca or NJ?

When I saw the thumbnail, rather than thinking "It's Elmo," I thought, "It's the red guy from DHMIS!"

Who does he think he's fooling with that comb-over? The guy is brilliant and great at what he does so lose your hair with dignity and pride. Or, get plugs.

This is exactly why we love puppets. This demonstration was amazing! We need this on our show! We are kids on a budget but we can dream!
