I love how Adam pointed out that once you put personality into a puppet you forget about the puppeteer, seemingly forgetting that he subconsciously did it himself earlier in the video when he couldn't help himself and said hello to the bug.

It's kinda like the puppet randy felt face, it's basically a puppet controlled by a comedian. The first minute your watching a puppet and the second minuted your watching randy. A good puppeteer will make you forget the puppet

Exactly, it's like second nature... Its weird because if i were talking to someone whos playing with a puppet, i would assume they're not even listening to me becaude they're too concentrated on giving personality to the puppet. But here he's doing it like the puppet has a mind on its own, and even formulates answers like the puppet and him are 2 different beings

So the crazy thing about Barnaby is how young he is, and how intelligent, ingenious, and innovative he is, at such a young age! If you watch his videos, it's striking how well the editing is done; the original music that he makes himself, etc. He literally does it all, and I'm just tickled at the idea that he's legitimately just getting started! Watching these two talk to each other makes me think that Barnaby is a young Adam Savage in the making. I hope you feature him more!

Imagine stepping into a closet where Muppets like Kermit are stored. Characters always full of life and energy laying dead, or hanging like skins laid out to dry. people who have seen the Muppets puppets not being used have always described it as creepy and off putting because your brain makes them a person, gives them life when they never had any and you don't think twice about this cloth person not being a living creature, same with his hand puppets. Dabchick laying out on the table is a bit creepy when I'm used to seeing him in videos emoting and moving

Here's the thing that startled me about this: given something that Barnaby said early on in the piece, I feel that unequivocally celebrating him is a little hypocritical on Adam's part, and here's why: Barnaby's trying to patent the ENTIRE IDEA of this kind of hand/accessory puppet (search "patent WO2017207990A3"). Obviously, no one should be able to copy his characters, nor sell them. But if that patent is awarded, no one else (including Adam) will be able to make ANY kind of two hand/costume puppet without being in violation of said patent. That seems to me like "...treating something as a scarce commodity, when it is not scarce at all" (from Adam’s talk at the 2018 Bay Area Maker Faire on May 23). Maybe that's not the intent, but that's what it seems like to me.
@Hudson316
@Hudson316 6 жыл бұрын
I mean, there's a balance there, because he's come up with a new form of puppet, and there's very little to stop someone else seeing how he did it and producing them to sell without him seeing a cent.

I think it would be cool to make a baby dragon with the same "aardvark" base with an even longer swinging tail and baby-like wings showing they are too small to fly yet. Then just mass produce them and sell them to Renascence fairs around the world and toy companies and your good to go. People LOVE dragons so I figure it would be a good start.

The most amazing thing about puppeteers and ventriloquists is, if they're good, the puppets take on such a life of it's own that you no longer see them as puppets. Almost like the puppeteer has a split personality and the secondary personality exists in the puppet rather than through the puppet.

That plastic btw, if it's what I think, is polycaprolactone. It's sold under all sorts of names, the stuff I've used is called Polymorph but I think it's all the same material so brand doesn't matter. I think the reason it's not a huge thing with makers is it's not patented so nobody can make much money selling it, so there's not much advertising/marketing. The plus side of that is, it's pretty cheap! I love the stuff, so versatile and easy to work with. Seriously, half the time people 3D print something they'd be better off sculpting it from PCL. Quicker, easier, and stronger.
