The corporate world is not built for introverts. No matter how "outspoken" I am in the workplace, my colleagues expect me to talk through the whole 8 hours. It's so tiring 😢 I excel better in silence.

I never spoke up at meetings. About two years ago, I gave myself a challenge to ask at least two questions and comment at least twice in every meeting I attend at work. It doesn’t matter if it’s a group of 5 or 50. It is hard but I force myself to do this and overtime it has become a little easier for me to speak up at meetings. I am currently in a role where I facilitate meetings of over an hour during which I am expected to do the most talking. I also make use of my voice recording on my phone instead a journal. This allows me to listen to how I sound, my pace, and enunciation.

Thank you very much for this, I learnt a lot! Two tips I'd like to add: 1. ELIMINATE FILLER WORDS. Fight them like your life depends on it. Too many people these days say "like" at least five times in two sentences! "Like" may not be the filler word you use, it may be “umm”, or “you know”, etc. Whatever it is, train yourself to eliminate it. 2. If you're asked a question you don't have a prepared answer for, feel free to pause to properly articulate your thoughts before speaking. This kills two birds with a stone because it also creates anticipation in the listener.

do you have any tips for eliminating filler words?
@Vee_TheWorshipper
@Vee_TheWorshipper 3 ай бұрын
@@4nd3ll hi! Sure. I’m no professional, but I’d be glad to let you know what worked for me. Firstly, I identified the filler words I used, and became hyper aware of my use of them. This way, it was easy for me to catch myself before using them. Secondly, as the name “filler words” implies, we tend to use them as crutches when we’re talking faster than our brains are thinking, so we get to a point where we’re unsure of what to say next. That being said, use the second tip in my original comment. Before you start speaking, and when you catch yourself about to use them, pause to properly gather and articulate your thoughts, then speak. Thirdly, (building on the foundation of my second point), speak slower. This is another way to gain time to gather your thoughts. It also makes you sound relaxed and confident, which again is killing two birds with a stone. Hope this helps!
@phyllisissami

It’s exciting when you realize you’re replacing your filler words with ‘silence’ which is a great pause and makes the speech a wonderful one.

In this HIGH digital age where everything we do is online or on an app and very little is in person, it’ is more critical than ever to be able to present ourselves with our voice as well as our looks. I see so many KZbin videos where the person cannot pronounce words, misuses words to mean something they don’t mean or does not enunciate clearly and it ruins the video for me. I generally turn it off. There’s so much focus on looks currently but if people open their mouth and it’s not as well-pleasing to the ear as their look is meant to be to the eye, I don’t stay. Speaking well is so important, on every level. I’d like to see us spend more time, effort and attention on it. 🌱
