Lyrics:
Well I'm standing here looking at you
What do I see? I'm looking straight through
It's so sad when you're young
To be told you're having fun
So unplug the jukebox
And do us all a favor, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, that music's lost its taste
So try another flavor

I've seen a FB comment that says "you know you're old when your favourite music is played at the supermarket". I literally was doing my groceries at the supermarket about an hour ago ... and listening to THIS. Hadn't heard this in DECADES. I was happily pushing a trolley through the aisles, singing this and got so many weird looks ...I didn't give a shit. In my element. Forgot to grab half my groceries though. Boy, I miss this era of music.

I bought the album on vinyl in 1980, I was 15 & I played it so many times it drove my parents mad. I remember the gate fold cover & looking at the photos of Adam & desperately wanting to be as cool as he was. It is hard for kids now to understand the sheer impact this song had & how popular Adam & the Ants were. Like Star Wars in 77, you just don't see excitement about music & films like that anymore. It makes me sad for this generation, to never have experienced it.

Ha ha I was only 5 or 6 but I remember running around with some kind of electrical tape across my face mimicking him, what a different world back then, I miss the sense of community. But perhaps some things have changed for the better, there are probably less little kids getting thrashed by their dads for minor infringements, but then again they are snowflakes these days lol

I lived in a flat across from a music venue in Edinburgh, Scotland. Monday nights they had new upcoming live acts. You could tell how popular an act was by the size of the queue on a Monday night. The bus stop to my flat was two streets away. The night Adam & The Ants played (I'd never heard of them) the streets were literally packed! A normal 5-minute walk took 30mins to squeeze through the crowd, just awesome!

I would not regret that decision either. QGH was old by then and this was exciting and new. I still listen to both, as well as older and much newer exciting music. Artists always have a hook that draws us in and tickles the excitement centres of our brain. I have to admit that the older ones from 60's 70's and 80's give me more of a tingle than modern music but even recent stuff still has the ability to catch my interest. I just regret the fact that my attention has been caught by an algorithm or AI, or autotune. Obviously I'm a dumb human who reacts to a catchy meme, but the old catchy memes generated by talented humans still have the edge over modern interpretations of the old sound. Some of them aren't bad, and will probably infect my brain for the rest of my life, but, meh! they aren't the bangin' tunes of my adolescent years.

I remember when they came out on MTV - I was blown away by the music. The use of two drums, especially the deeper sounding drums like Native American drumming and the use of sticks. Bow Wow had something similar but not as melodic in my opinion. The people in the video reminds me of the people's reaction at this at first - like a "whaa?" type of music in a time when the "synth" new wave bands were popping out everywhere. A combination of Native American rhythms, pirate outfits, guitar chords that ring out for an extended time, a solo that's short and to the point and sounding like a 60's venture vibe - What can we say - a true original band that stands the test of time!

This is the song that got me into the Ants. I remember vividly, watching Top of The Pops and this being introduced. I liked 'Dog Eat Dog', but this one sold me completely. I was captivated by the Burundi drum, by the image, and the video. I'd have been coming up on my 7th Birthday when i saw this. Shortly after my Birthday i got the album, and played it relentlessly. I've still got it tucked away safely. The Ants were my first band, and i'll love them if i live to be 100.

This was the very early era of music videos when directors didn't have a clue what they were supposed to be doing, nobody knew what a music video was "supposed" to look like, and budgets were low. The result is some of the most creative, artistic and fun videos of any era. 10 years later and they'd be spending a million dollars renting navy battleships to film Cher straddling on a gun.

Chesterette It bears mentioning that there were two major incarnations of this band, of which this is the second. The first line-up was more punk-oriented initially but there are only a few recordings and the line-up was fluid. Early tracks like Lou, Beat My Guest, Hapstead, Fat Fun and Lady have clear punk roots (though the messages depart from the standard decay/despair/rejection motifs of punk of the day) and the original recordings from Jubilee are also closer to punk, particularly Plastic Surgery (Deutscher Girl been sanitized on all subsequent releases), and not yet the eclectic fusion of visual and musical ideas that the band would adopt after getting dropped by their label prior to recording Dirk Wears White Sox. The Jubilee soundtrack, however, ended the band's support from the punk crowd who felt it was a betrayal of the punk ethos by Chelsea set dilettantes. Until then the band had some support from the punk scene, thanks in part to their collaboration and friendships with people like Jordan (and the crowd from Seditionaries), Siouxie Sioux, Sid Vicious, and Marco PIrroni (who would later join the band) and others. Malcolm McLaren didn't create Adam and the Ants, rather they hired him to manage the band later in October '79. He broke the band up in January '80 to create Bow Wow Wow and worked with Stuart and Marco to create the final incarnation of Adam and the Ants responsible for this song, and most of the songs people know as being from Adam and the Ants.

This song in particular is so completely original and unique and...well, fun. Some 80's bands get reduced to one or two songs but this album is a f***king killer, and this song really pushed limits of what sounds could be made. The drums alone stand apart, but his voice and lyrics really separate him from the pack.

I am exactly his age and 40 years ago had no time for either his image or music. These days I listen and watch the video material with total admiration. I am amazed at his fantastic artistry and cannot believe that I let it pass me by all those years ago. I can only conclude that I used to be a coarse and ignorant peasant.
