Market research can even reveal how your customers feel about your current business and if it's meeting your their needs. You might even find out what people think about your business that you weren't aware of (positive AND negative!).

Hi Adam, i know this is an old video but I wanted to ask you a question I have been having for the past year while consuming your content. I understand that it's important to understand your customers, their geographic and demographic details are going to be useful to a business for obvious marketing and sales reasons. I often get confused when you talk about understanding their fears and desires, for example, if selling something simple like catering equipment to the hospitality sector, how does knowing their fears and desires help with my marketing. If I find out their fear is going out of business and losing everything, and their dreams are to have a family and to retire early. How does this help me with my marketing, it has no correlation. Love your videos, you've helped me so much and you are the reason I'm a wanna-be digital marketing nerd.

Hi ross, I know this is an old comment, but I just thought that if you find caterers who are small and want to provide for their family, you could emphasise reliability, ease and cheapness in your equipment cheap (adresses fear of going out of buisness) Reliable (adresses need to leave something to your children) Ease (won't have to spend ages training new hires to use equimpnent) Each want can be adressed in the product or marketing, just think a little more lateraly.

Nice video! I'm actually new with marketing. So I don't get how to get the data for "What When Where Who Why"? Like how would I know their goals are or pain points? I'll really appreciate your reply, Thanks!

That why asking your (potential) customers these questions can be useful. In this video, he is putting an emphasis on checking out real buying behavior - this answers the question of what they are buying, maybe also when and where they are buying. But the question about who, when, where, and especially why can be answered by using customer surveys. Or having small interviews with your customers in a more structured, unbiased manner. This can also deliver you psychographic data, which can in turn be handy for market segmentation and having target groups based on psychographic data.
