Oh holy WOW!!! I was there June 5, 1968 around midnight at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, when there’d been be deafening chants of “We want Bobby!!!” … filled the stifling big old Embassy Room … where Bobby Kennedy weaved his way across a jam packed stage. He had arrived in the ballroom to declare victory ✌️ in the CAlifornia presidential primary. He had said in his campaign, “I run because I am convinced that this country is on a perilous course and because I have such a strong feeling about what must be done, and that I feel I am obliged to do all I can.” I was in art, poetry and music school just graduating in June 1968 and was a registered member of the Peace & Freedom Party only party felt at all like home ever… since President John F Kennedy had been assassinated November 22, 1963 …right after my birthday and before Thanksgiving and before I could vote in 1966 …and I met Eldridge and Kathleen Cleaver, Minister of Information For the Black Panther Party and Presidential candidate for the Peace and Freedom Party heard him speaking at the Library of Congress. In the November 7, 1968 issue of New York Review of Books, letter produced under heading of “Cleaver For President” by the “Eldridge Cleaver For President Fund”, as he attempted to rally support behind the Black Panther Party.. running on a platform of support for Black liberation struggles and immediate withdrawal from the war in Vietnam, he was clearly the only viable electoral challenge candidate to the discreditable politics of Nixon, Humphrey and Wallace…all we had going after Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June 1968…. and of course we’d all been through the assassination of MLK Jr April 4, 1968 in Memphis… we have were all super Peace & Freedom community people… still am. Always will be. Forever. Bobby Darin’s Song must be taken up by our global world wide rallies for Freedom! We are the largest peace movement in the history of humanity. We are people of all colors, all ages, all religious and spiritual light bearers, all political backgrounds, all healthy sexual preferences. We are United in the light with truth, love and healing for our freedoms, liberties and rights. We are family global. We support peace, people and planet. We are many millions of people all over the world. We are for freedom from war NOW! Let us all everyone everywhere have a revival of Bobby Darin’s Song and sing it clear and loud and strong. That’s what we were born to do and it sure is time to do it!!! Now over five decades after Robert Kennedy

At 79 I have to admit Bobby's version of this made me cry; the words have full meaning from start to end, and should be everyone's swan song, I hope it will be mine. Miss you Bobby, sleep warm and rest in Peace.

Clive, what do you mean, "Bobby's version"? Bobby wrote this song. And of course it's PERFECTION. The only other person I'm aware of that sang it was Tim Hardin, also a very fine job.

Bobby Darin died, in 1973, during open heart surgery. He was only 37 years old at the time. No one should ever die at that age, regardless of the reason. Robert Louis Stevenson once said....."Love makes us believe in immortality because there seems not room enough in life for so great a tenderness and it is inconceivable that the most masterful of our emotions should have no more than the spare moments of a few brief years." I believe he's right and that we'll hear Bobby sing again. :)

Come and sing a simple song of freedom Sing it like you've never sung before Let it fill the air Tell the people everywhere We, the people here, don't want a war. Hey, there, mister black man, can you hear me? I don't want your diamonds or your game I just want to be someone known to you as me And I will bet my life you want the same. Come and sing a simple song of freedom Sing it like you've never sung before Let it fill the air Tell the people everywhere We, the people here, don't want a war. Seven hundred million are ya list'nin'? Most of what you read is made of lies But, speakin' one to one ain't it everybody's sun To wake to in the mornin' when we rise? Come and sing a simple song of freedom Sing it like you've never sung before Let it fill the air Tell the people everywhere We, the people here, don't want a war. Brother Solzhenitsyn, are you busy? If not, won't you drop this friend a line Tell me if the man who is plowin' up your land Has got the war machine upon his mind? Come and sing a simple song of freedom Sing it like you've never sung before Let it fill the air Tell the people everywhere We, the people here, don't want a war. Now, no doubt some folks enjoy doin' battle Like presidents, prime ministers and kings So, let's all build them shelves Where they can fight among themselves Leave the people be who love to sing. Come and sing a simple song of freedom Sing it like you've never sung before Let it fill the air Tell the people everywhere We, the people here, don't want a war. I say … let it fill the air … Tellin' people everywhere … We, the people here, don't want a war. Show less REPLY

Bobby Darin wrote this song in 1969 right after Nixon took office with the promise to end the war in Vietnam, but instead started dropping more bombs. I remember the people in the streets chanting: "Hey, hey, LBJ. How many kids did you kill today." So Oatifer has a point. Carter was the only president in recent history who didn't kill anybody or invade anybody, and spoke forcefully for human rights. But it's a great song however it's presented.

@MHumberto Hi Manuel! You're right. He had become involved in the Vietnam anti-war movement. He had been also been highly involved in Robert Kennedy's campaign (he was there when Kennedy was assassinated in 1968). He went through a very difficult period after this and it was during that time that he wrote the song (1969).

To me, Bobby Darin was an inspiration. He stuck it to the man, and chose the path of music he wished to take. Both individually, and with Mercer, he was such. On a side note, he and Mercer made a terrific combination, and it's tragic that they didn't make any more music.

Maybe SJW and ANTIFA should take a listen also. There are also many Dems who should listen say maybe Maxine Waters. This hatred and vile behavior is not limited to Republican or Dems. Oh and one more point, it is the Dems who currently want to stay in the Middle East and it was the Dems who went off their rockers when Trump said we were pulling our troops out of Syria and it is the Dems who have been pushing for harder sanctions against Russia and want to increase troop allocations in Europe. Seems to me that the Dems are more hawks then Doves.

One of the greatest songs ever written by Bobby Darin and only now becoming an important world anthem -- as far as I am concerned right up there with Bob Dylan's "Chimes of Freedom," John Lennon's "Imagine," and Elvis Presley's "If I Can Dream," written by Walter Earl Brown. Darin actually outdid the heroes of protest song with this incredible anthem. Joan Baez? Did you ever cover this?
