Blew up my S13 and Got Another!

Day 1 of Super D consisted of practice & qualifying. I had some bad luck pretty soon into the event, but managed to make the best of it! Competition video will be up tomorrow or wednesday - it's a good one!

Very very true, even a good ole 2zz to keep it 4cyl can do well with a bit of boost. Probably alittle lighter too. But all things aside i like the cream 240 and its personality, no need for it to sound like a camry at idle. Gotta let Adam's dream grow :)

You need to remember the rated hp on these turbo is a theoretical engine hp rating based of how much air it can flow. So your 480rwhp if you only had 15%drive train loss is 552hp... if your then running more boost in different places you absolutely over spun that tiny little g25..

The SR was tuned on a Dynojet, many people in the tuning industry say they read high and put out less realistic figures than a mainline or mustang dyno. They are only a tool for achieving the tuning job, people get caught up in the numbers when they aren't even realistic to begin with. G25's come with a speed sensor port, anyone who takes their investment seriously will utilise this available technology and implement a safety net. Also atmospheric conditions, especially altitude will have an effect on turbo speed, as barometric pressure decreases with altitude it will require the turbo to spin faster to achieve a given boost level.

That block has been rebuilt soooo many times. I bet if he picked up a new sr block and had it sleeved it would hold up better. This time it happened to be the turbo, but with his luck and that sr he will replace the turbo then blow that motor the next drift session. Lol poor guy

One thing I've learn't from watching Cleatus, when there's big variations in temperatures etc he always adjusts the map Leroy is running. Could be what caused the turbo in the SR to scream enough.

I did watch it before I commented, I understand it's his turbo. Consider he wouldn't bother with one if he had an LS. The main reason I suggested chevy power is because it is a common engine sold in many vehicles in the US. The advantage to having auto parts stores spares available to you anywhere is huge. I'm at the track 2x a month, I imagine its similar for Adam. I used to run "exotic" JDM engines but without bringing a 2nd complete setup its tough to keep them serviced and working all weekend (endurance w2w racing - similar abuse to drifting given the extreme long stints on road course?). I gave up several weekends and also have rented and borrowed cars to not waste trips to far off events, I got sick of it and engine #3 I flipped and went with something more "common" that includes being able to get parts everywhere, help from anyone (no weird gotchas or domain knowledge required for LS) and I'm only going faster than before.

I’m a huge fan of a well done KA-T motor. It seemed like it was never on rev limiter and performed very well. As fun as a 500 plus SR is, it seems like it has a lot of reliability issues! I’m not saying it doesn’t rip when it is running right but it seems like running right is difficult as that power level. I would love to see Adam keep the SR but maybe dialed back a bit?

Been following you for a while now and completely relate on why you want to keep the “stock” engine. But I know so many people reliably running ka-t,s with 400+ hp. With much more torque than the sr. And it’s a factory option in those cars, and won’t throw the weight off too much. I’m done with the ka-t and moving to 2j, but I can honestly say the ka,s are super reliable.

The turbo is absolutely going to be at a higher shaft speed to achieve your requested boost when operating at a higher altitude. That being said I really doubt that was the reason for failure. I would immediately assume foreign object damage or an oil supply issue.

Just FYI, I would double check the wastegate to make sure it was opening fully. If the turbo was overboosting, and the boost control was done right, either the wastegate wasn't opening fully, or it's too small to bypass enough exhaust.

Adam. Altitude has a massive affect on turbo rpm. Higher altitudes means thinner air so the turbo has to work harder to produce the same boost level than at sea level for example

if you figure drive train loss your sr was actually making 550 crank which is literally maxing out the turbo so its not that big of a surprise that it let go. [since the turbo is rated for crank not wheel power]
