Nevertheless, once you run out of your electric battery charge (25-mile range), you are left with only 577 V8 horsepower to push a 5,368-pound car. What a disaster! And the rest, I am not sure where to go with it. What is up with not having a gear lever? I don’t think BMW is listening to their customers and clients anymore. Every interview they feed us a bunch of BS and the interviewers are afraid to ask tough questions. The BMW may fool new buyers, but not the BMW enthusiasts and the people who are loyal to the brand. You can’t fool us. Cheap plastic door panels, plastic carbon fiber-looking paddle shifts, and no carbon fiber steering. Yet, all of which is available on the M3 and M4 models. The rear diffuser truly looks like an afterthought. And the front kidney grill is identical to the i5 M60. What is joke! And I am sure BMW has increased the price beyond any measure to match the rest of the model lineups.

I know that this is a standard nowadays (I am looking at you mercedes) but that doesn't mean it looks great. That's why all those upper luxury brands try to avoid LCD screens as much as it is possible because that doesn't look good.

Although I do agree the car is a significant downgrade from the f90 m5, it's really more of a different take 9n the m5, it's more of a luxury saloon than a go kart handling 4 seat sports car which was the opposite for f90. Another thing I'd like to point out is that the battery would never run out of power as the engine will star recuperating it once the charge is low, it won't let you full 730hp but you won't be left with just 577hp.

I'm trying to embrace the new 5 series model and being an F90 M5 Comp owner I know things have to move on, however I just don't like it. There's no specific reason and I will probably grow into it (like the new fronts of the M3, etc), but for the moment I would rather spend my money on the F90. Speed and BHP isn't everything, and it sounds like the V8 engine in the new one has to rely on the electric motors to push it past the stock BHP of the F90 M5 Comp. The dash also looks very much like any other new model BMW (My son has a new 220i BMW and the dash is identical) so apart from the M1 and M2 buttons there's not much difference there either. So I'm glad they have bought out a new version M5 as it needs to have come, but disappointed with my initial thoughts. Oh, and where is the sound!?!? The only sound in the cabin I can hear sounds fake! Thanks for your video Joe, always very good and always very honest... 10/10 for the video, but probably a 2 or 3/10 for the car. Obviously this is my own opinion.

From what I've read and from my understanding of what makes a car handle good, the extra weight being the batteries under the floor actually helps with the way it drives. The batteries significantly lower the center of gravity making the car feel more planted and more confidence inspiring to the driver. Now if they could figure out how to get the weight back down while keeping the batteries and the center of gravity low, it be a millions times better of a car. It's still a boat after all.

I am not opposed to plug in, or EV, or alt fuel, or completely ICE. All flavors have their place. And I appreciate their unique flavor as an automotive. But I do wish this trend of ever heavier cars stops, no matter which type of motor or fuel type is powering it. Besides light weight, I want them to engineer back the steering feel/feedback that they engineered out,all in name of improved tech. Today’s cars are far more numb and void of man to machine interactive connection. I will hold my verdict on this car till I drive it. But for me the weight gain is a huge negative.

BMW have thrown all their true performance values out of the window. I'd buy a second hand Porsche Taycan Turbo S which is faster and prettier than that because they're mega cheap used, then find a beautiful V8 E90 M3 from 2010, have it fully serviced as a weekend warrior. Or maybe find a mint low mileage E46 M3, or maybe an E39 manual M5. And I think i'd still have £10k change after you spec that hideous thing up. Oh dear. This car will grow on most people just like the lastest M3/M4 has. The M engineers know what they are doing. Give the M5 a chance. The review will be better than what people expect. M5 Engineers have had years of experience and development so will make sure it’s not a disaster

why would anyone give a chance to a 2.4 tons vehicle?
@renas53714 ай бұрын
The latest M3/M4 hasn’t grown on a lot of people though outside of KZbinrs and is considered to have a horrendous front end still by most, to this day. Come to think of it, I don’t see many of them on the road either.

Good design shouldn’t have to grow on you, it’s more the BMW fanboys accept it rather than it actually being good looking. Plus it’s slower to 60 than the outgoing one, and it’s 600kg heavier for what only 100hp extra? Think this may be a miss for M
@Cruor344 ай бұрын
It is slower 0-60 than the old M5. That is unacceptable. If it was hybrid and weighed 4 tons but was quicker and somehow magically handled well IMO that would be fine. But that isn't the case. its a DOWNGRADE from the old one. Looks are an opinion, numbers aren't.

People complaining about the weight forgetting it's still M division that knows what they're doing . Go and drive present X5 M even drive M50i they go like crazy so I'm not worried about the new M5 at all . On top of that it was never a track car it was always a shuttle so everything is on point because that torque on the straight line will kill 🚀

We are complaining about the complete loss of direction. More weight. More tech to control it. No engineering restraint. It’s an arms race of power with no finesse.

Thanks for the effort to get this review out to us Joe. The sensible and reasonable folk amongst us understand that you only had limited opportunity to drive the car and within BMW's contractual boundaries. We also recognise that driving the nearly-finished car on track and driving the production one on the road will be completely different. I'd be keen to hear your views, if you're allowed to say, on how it performs compared with the F90, the F90 CS and G80 CS.

Great overview thanks. I am attracted to this I have to admit. I like the fact that it's hybrid. I mean I could do all my daily in-city driving just on electric power. That is kind of priceless. It is one reason why I was eyeing the new Mercedes E class hybrids but didn't ultimately go in that direction because, well I'm not an octogenarian. The M5 on the other hand seems pretty much drawback free. You get supercar performance more or less and you get that in a car you can drive every day. The weight is a non issue on the road. On a track maybe I don't know. But this is a road car. Would make for an amazing road tripper here in the US.
@eugenux4 ай бұрын
honestly, it can be the most comfortable, amazingly fast and other similar bla-bla...; I think that if you're not a teenager, these things mean very little; even if I would beat verstappen on sundays in one, I still wouldn't be interested; touch, feel, supplesness, engagement, interaction and connection with the road in front of me; 100-110 mph is really enough on a back road, you don't need 200.., no one needs actually. This is excessive and made me realise the last true m5 was the e39 one. Cheers!

Stop lying Joe. It does feel it’s weight, it’s not so much faster than the previous model, cheap plastic bits and again, it will 100% feel it’s weight on our crap UK roads plus the stiffer ride. Pointless hybrid for what? The weight kills the BHP figures. Save your money and get a G80 M3 👍

When are manufactures going to move away from "gloss black" plastic trims? It is not a quality finish, it does not give the impression of a premium vehicle as it is found on the cheapest of vehicles these days. Oh and if you even look in its direction it scratches! its extremely impractical for both the interior and exterior of any vehicle.

@@pevvex4452 I had my first car in 1977 (Beetle model 1971) and still 5 years ago I thought I would never have an EV. Have had 4 M-cars. Now I have had a Porsche Taycan since May 2021 and it's the best car I ever had, maybe par with the E92 M3 I had for 5 years. It's heavy yes, but feels way lighter (feels like 1800-1900 kg) when driving it. It's fantastic on curvy roads, especially in the Alps. My wife's car is a X1 e25 and it's the most solid car she has ever owned. Both our cars have around 75 000 km on the tacho. Yes the Taycan has some software tweaks but otherwise nothing. I would still wait to give judgment. Joe Achilles thought the G90 drives fantastically.
