At least you made the smart move purchasing the car already ASSUMING the engine was bad vs people purchasing projects like that just being optimistic the engine will be fine/good
@noxious891233 жыл бұрын
Exactly this! I bought my last car with a smokey exhaust, expecting it to need a new turbo and/or stem seals. It needed both, and it got both! Been a nice tight, reliable engine since :)
@helplmchoking3 жыл бұрын
@@noxious89123 similar story here! Got an incredible deal on an E92, loads of good kit, in great condition and already had a couple very minor tweaks I was gonna do. But kept my expectations down, I was saving $5-8k off what they normally go for so I knew there would probably be some work needed. Of course, it's an N54 which meant misfire, oil leaks straight on the belt and a cracked water pump but I was ready for it and even with the work it still cost less than the other ones for sale. Gotta be realistic! If I'd been excited about the deal and expected it to be perfect, I'd be disappointed and down on the car. As it is, I've still gotten a good deal, just not an amazing one, in return for a few weekends' work - meaning I got to hang out with mates and my dad a few times

@tstuff12133 жыл бұрын
Honestly that's the best option. If he is going to make the S14 into a rental car like he said he was considering doing then it should have the most robust engine possible because who knows how people will drive it. And a stock engine turned up to 400hp will not be robust for long under certain conditions. Also that engine is already in that car pretty much ready to go for driving he shouldn't end up with 2 cars not 100% rather than 1 that isn't 100% and one that is. Save the S14.

@helplmchoking3 жыл бұрын
Yup, plus it's an SR. You can give the cylinders ar rub with steel wool, hammer the rods straight in a vice and zip tie it up and it'll make good power for years (while leaking oil and sounding like a lawn mower). I guess they're rarer engines in the States, but here in NZ this would be good condition for an SR and none of our Silvias have paint as clean as either of Adam's 😅

Seems like you’re going to be doing some more SR’s.. couple things to note; letting the timing chain drop won’t throw the chain off the teeth in the pump, internal guides in the pump won’t allow it. Also, finding TDC can be found by rotating the engine and cylinder #1 will be at the top with the two timing marks on the sprockets will be at 10 intake & 2 exhaust (time), happens every like 10-20 rotations if I remember correctly.

Install new forged parts in the SR. What love to see the process of that on an SR!
@danielnelson48813 жыл бұрын
Pistons and rods are the same in this motor as they are in other motors... Nothing really exciting about it because it's an SR. I don't know what else he'd do but rods and pistons... I guess I'm not sure if SR's need sleeves, valves, springs, and retainers.. I think he mentioned something about those in the video, I'm sure what he's running are fine because they aren't gonna be revving it to the moon anyway since they have boost.. If it did need sleeves, he'd definitely have someone do that for him though too... SR20's are open deck right? They gotta be, I imagine. Anything further than this and you're just looking at going billet everything... Blueprinted block, head... The full works.

in my experience rocker arm stoppers tend to break rocker arms which is why I avoid them. The real solution is going to a VE(VVL) head where the rockers are fixed. Also with hydraulic lift SR's, the shims only job is to ensure the rocker arm contact patch is even against the cam lobe, the hydraulic lifter will always ensure contact between the two. When doing the double guide mod, you need to grind down the other side of the rocker arm, as the guide side of the arm is slightly narrower to fit inside the guide.

pro tip. if you face the blade of the razor opposite the direction you are scraping you can remove the RTV without running the risk of digging into the aluminum. A really good small engine technician taught me that years ago and makes the cleanup easier and faster.

Because metal was found (at least 2 big ones, more could of been dislodged turning it upside down that you havent found) I don't advise putting it back together & using it as it could blow up if those dislodged metals got someplace bad after it was upsidedown). I advise two routes #1 rebuild it or #2 take the upper pan/oil pump/frontcover off any inspect for metal & de-grease (few cans of card cleaner)l to flush any remaining metal out & slap it back together. Honestly rebuild it - something is bad inside if two huge parts were in it.

Hate to be that guy but you don't need to worry that much when pulling the cams out with the chain coming off, as the oil pump on an sr has to metal taps on it to prevent the chain coming off the crank pulley. As for what to do with the Sr, I would strip it down and replace the piston's and rods. Also replace the oil pump. If your going to do something, do it right and then you have piece of mind and you already have the engine stripped down halfway already.
