As someone who is overweight I never felt you were being fat phobic. In fact if im honest seeing the latest info about nick's plan and behind the scenes footage of past years, that actually gave me a touch of ick because it had fat phobic undertones whether intentional or not. Most people dont intentionally gain weight to excess and many struggle with that weight both mentally and physically, loosing it can be difficult even if following healthy diets and exercising and other people will still critisize you not knowing your situation. But Nick purposely did that to himself and then just to rub it in lost it all again because he could.

It would be one thing to gain the weight and lose it bc you wanted a healthier life, hell I’d honestly be okay for it being a genuine social experiment (as someone who has been both fat and skinny and experienced truly how different people treat you based on that I think it would have been nice to see it documented somewhere) but to have it as “I wanted to create a terrible who is SO terrible” and that character just be an awful stereotype of fat people, and the concept being the fatter he gets the worse the character gets? It makes a bad name for good fat people

As someone who has been large their whole life, I've not taken anything you've said as fatphobic. There is a huge difference between Nik's weight gain and the weight gain of the average person. You can be a bigger person with a healthy life style. Nik was purposely killing himself and not big from genetics or health issues. He ate extremely unhealthy on purpose to create the weight gain.
@FleaÉireАй бұрын
Yup my weight gain was from steroids making me feel hungry constantly and then being addicted to food. I have lost a good bit, but I am still considered overweight. My health is still shit, so I’m not active which would help me lose more, but if I was to keep trying to lose weight without the activity, I’d have to starve myself basically. I seem to have some hormone problems, but they are not flagging in blood tests. I got acne last year for the first time at 29 and lost about 3/4 of my hair. I still have the acne and had to go back on the pill to see if that would help. No answers for the hair loss. My thyroid flagged as abnormal in a blood test but has been fine since, so again no answers about that either. Anyways I’m happy with where I am atm. If I lose more, great, if not, that’s also grand. My body is doing its best. So what if I have a few extra pounds. I’m cuddly, comfortable and slowly getting my shit together health wise. That’s what matters.

There was nothing wrong with your statements, Adam. He was abusing his body with intention to become morbidly obese, nothing about that is healthy- From Nik's own admission, so many problems came from the excess weight he was carrying, nevermind the damage caused by the absurd amount of excess proteins, sugar, sodium, etc. There is fat-phobia and then there's an objective statement about someone's lifestyle and health. It should be common sense that eating 20,000+ calories in one day on a regular basis is insanely unhealthy. Anyone who struggles with morbid-obesity, whether they're in their 20s or 50s, can openly acknowledge the stress put on their joints, the struggle to breathe, the struggle to walk, and the struggle to be self-sufficient, and simultaneously not be degrading and dehumanizing to themselves or the subject. Call this a hot take, but if anyone is fatphobic, it is Nik. Becoming morbidly obese to profit off of himself as a fat caricature is insane and inherently harmful behavior in so many ways, nevermind the nature of his supposedly even uglier intentions to then dramatically lose weight and decide when he's done using obesity as a comedy.

Genuinely thank you Adam for what you were saying about how it's just not realistic for people to lose weight when Nik said he wanted to be "inspirational." I've struggled with my weight my whole life and have Binge ED. I grew up in a fatphobic household and heard terrible things all my life about people who are overweight. It has led to me having severe self image problems and confidence issues because of how I look. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't have some some kind of criticism or self hatred remark about myself in my head. It's worse because I have lost weight before, but it probably was due to restrictive eating that I didn’t realize at the time. I've tried so many things and attempted to start dieting and lifestyle changes so many times with very little progress. My mental health works against me every day and makes it impossible. My body makes it really hard to drop weight. All of that to say that I genuinely appreciate you pointing out that not everyone has the resources and money to do what Nik has. I don't have the time or money to cook and eat healthy and go to the gym. I don't have enough money to get medical help to lose weight and I cried when my insurance refused to cover the one chance I had. I see it every day that people around me (internet and IRL) that they can access those resources and it's so disheartening for me. Weight loss just isn't that easy or realistic for a lot of people and seeing someone who chose to gain that much weight for a bit and lose it quickly because he "can do it so you can too" really does feel like such a slap to the face, sadly

Going along with what you said about not everyone having access to nutritious, healthy food and proper medication, there are also genetic conditions, hormonal conditions, all kinds of medical things that can cause people to struggle losing weight. I don't think it's inherently negative to "inspire" other people to want to make healthier lifestyle changes, but let's not act like weight is an end-all thing. Eating healthier and working out are amazing things to do for the health and wellbeing of your body, not something you should do to "identify as skinny" as his hat and shirt say.

The documentary you mention is Super Size Me, which purpose was to show how normalized large sizes were in American Fast Food in the 2000s specifically McDonalds. The doc did lead the McDonald’s discontinuing the “Super Size Me” option which was an extra extra large portion. So it did serve a purpose and wasn’t to just get fat. Also, as a heavier person myself, losing and gaining weight is something society has always been way too fascinated by. Think celebrity weight loss and such. I do think Nick’s weird journey does show how obsessive we are with other peoples weight gain and weight loss. Also, I totally understand his thinking of, “you’ll see one day I’ll lose the weight” because I think a lot of bigger people have this thought too. So I do have to respect his dedication to the bit and his boundaries with stopping at 30. He could have easily planned this and failed because he was in too deep, but he didn’t. This is also coming from someone who does not enjoy his mukbang content and is not really a fan of him. However, I do think there is something interesting to talk about in terms of discussions of weight, and calling it irrelevant and not a big deal is counterproductive. The fact that people would watch his content, while he was in his own words, destroying his body, is fascinating tbh

It's 100% fat shaming and gross. And so privileged like you say. Access to personal trainers and gym facilities, the luxury of TIME to dedicate to fitness and expensive nutritional choices etc I don't like what this guy does at ALL. And him sitting there with that big self-satisfied grin at all the praise he's getting for it is just ...ugh. There's an awful Australian "comedian" here called Isaac Butterfield who says a bunch of racist, fat-shaming, queer-shaming stuff as his material and calls them jokes so it's fine. 8:30 I think also having been a bigger person and having family members who are overweight, comparing it to anorexia is a normal and in my op a good thing to do, as it's the other end of eating disorders, and people who are overweight don't look at it as seriously as they would someone who's anorexic vice versa, I think it's helpful and it paints the bigger picture of eating disorders
@omgmo196225 күн бұрын
Ehhh but not all fat people have an ED. Being fat in and of itself is not an ED, there's far more that goes into it. Just as every very thin person isnt anorexic
@alanaroberts47724 күн бұрын
@omgmo1962 I never said they do?? But also if you're overweight especially severely then it's most likely you don't have a good relationship with food which is what an ed is..

A fatphobic comment would be for example if Nick didn't outwardly express any health concerns and he was just a fat man and then if you had started to go off about how unhealthy he is simply because you have seen a fat person. But your concern clearly comes from him literally saying over and over he fears for his life due to his poor health
@projectdolphin7398Ай бұрын
It feels more like what nick did is fatphobic. Hes acting like hes put on a performance but it was all just him being as big and disgusting as possible and somehow thats supposed to be a character? Hmmm.
@Maiden_to_motherАй бұрын
31:04 I think the answer is MONEY. At the core of this character, there are dollar signs. It was more of a way to get a lot of money really fast than it was a social experiment. This is just my opinion of course. It is an already known fact that people tend to enjoy watching the unraveling of other people online. It’s nothing new. Nick took advantage of this truth, he didn’t prove this truth via his social experiment, it was already a well known fact lol I admire his ability to stick to the bit and get rich no matter what.

I personally think this whole stunt has been really stupid. Influencing people to eat horrendous amounts of food.. adding to people being unhealthy.. and then NOT showing them how you lost all the weight? How you actually got healthy again? What I think is the most important part, he doesn’t mention it. I think this is one of the stupidest things I’ve seen on the internet and it’s very selfish

Nick is so proud of himself for all this character stuff- it’s not theatrical. It’s not special. It’s not genius. He is a content creator who made content where he gained and lost weight. Honestly, if he did put this much actual thought into all this, ITS SAD BECAUSE ITS SO WEAK. so weak

people think commenting on anyone’s weight is a judgement, people can recognise someone’s weight just like they can someone’s sexuality, race or religion. it’s not inherently bad. if adam was saying that fat people or overweight people were “disgusting “ and “wrong” then i would agree w the fat phobia but he was merely stating his body type and how he himself ( nick) believed himself to be so ill and worried for his life due to that weight. yall need to chill and look inwards. fr.
@marasjourney26 күн бұрын
I feel like saying it was an intentional character and that all his behavior during that time wasn’t really him is just his way of getting out of being held accountable for anything negative that he did during that decade. If he wasn’t really him, then he can say and do whatever he wants right? He’d get to be the most loud, unfiltered version of himself and still feel un-phased by any consequences of his actions because even in his own mind it’s not really “him” doing it

I’m a larger person myself and I believe what Nick was doing was dangerous. That’s not fatphobic- that’s the truth. There was no me shaming or name-calling. It was me pointing out that what he’s doing for clicks is dangerous.
@oddsocks228 күн бұрын
I don't care about the weight loss because not only was he getting fat to mock obese people, but his so-called "character" had real-life consequences for many people. He harrassed and terrorised multiple people on the platform and caused legitimate fear and harm to others. Stephanie's story is just one of many that occurred for the sake of what he's now calling "method acting" and patting himself on the back for. Are the victims of his poor behaviour meant to simply get over the harm he caused and congratulate him for his character work? The harm he exploited, monetised, and profited off of? Disgusting. The whole thing is a fucking farce.
@leslieknope3394Ай бұрын

I’m so tired of him. It’s just so narcissistic how he thinks the world has been thinking “where is Nick?” When we were just grateful for the break and didn’t even wonder he was. I even was able to forget he exists which was lovely.
@Sunflower_lover15Ай бұрын
Honestly, as a bigger person myself, it really pissed me off with how Nick handled this whole "experiment." The way he acted as a bigger dude always felt like a play on the stereotype of 'fat people act like pigs' and now that he lost weight becoming, like written on his hat proudly, skinny, he turned a complete 180. Even him talking about his experience as a bigger persong he thinks of it as a role, one that he made himself, and it just seemed to show me that going into this he had negative connotations surrounding bigger people. Even if he didn't mean to give that idea, it still must've been some internal prejudice he had while doing the "bit." Also, like many others have said, just because he lost weight doesn't automatically clean his slate! Thanks for reading my NyQuil induced rant! Lots of love, Adam!

As someone who was at there biggest was 340bl or 24 stone. Adam is not being fatphobic. I am now (weighted these morning) 274.08bl. I can agree with everything Adam is saying, yes I am still over weight but I can all ready feel the change in just walking around the house. Side note I use to play the Violin, and change to Bassoon because I found the Violin was to hard. So it is a shame that he throw that away for all this online BS. Because it's weird now because of his past, could I set and lesson to him play? I dont know but I would want to because of his skill. I dont know. what are your thoughts on this?

I feel like for him, it boils down to this: I “created a character” who was so self-absorbed, indulgent, etc. etc., and now I’ve hoodwinked you all to show you that actually it was a lie the whole time- and because of that, I can’t be self-absorbed. I’m not gluttonous. I proved it, see? It seems like a very strange coping mechanism to me for him to renounce these aspects of himself that he doesn’t have control over or dislikes. I also think that it probably wasn’t all planned from the start. I think more likely, he was doing 7 mukbangs a week, and gained weight, and before he realized or cared, it got out of control. Then he concocted this “plan” where he gets to spend a few more years eating tons and acting crazy, before he hoodwinks everybody and ultimately comes out of it the moral superior. And not a “fat person” because he actually planned it. Maybe some of the excessive craziness happened after he decided to do this, and it’s a mix of lie and truth. But I definitely don’t think he was planning this from the start.

You made a good point Adam. Niko gaining and losing weight, treating it as a gotcha, … this could all ruin it for those who truly struggle with weight bc now ppl are gonna be like “well if Niko can lose the weight, why can’t u?” He’s super fat phobic, and it shows in the way he’s bragging abt how skinny he is… like the fact that he’s wearing a shirt that says “ i identify as skinny” lmao… problematic af
