Thanks for the great analysis! I must add, that in addition to your obvious engineering expertise, you are very good at presenting. Good elocution and good organization of the material. I was lucky enough to test drive one of these last weekend! It has kickass acceleration yet buttery smooth ride. My Teslas haven't been even remotely as good on ride quality. And, of course, it has plenty of impressive high tech stuff on the front screen for driver and passenger to play with. And the Big Butt front of the car doesnt look so bad in person. However, my local dealer wanted $108k for the car! It was Red/black like yours, but did NOT have as many options as yours. I look forward to your next videos about this very interesting new vehicle!

09:45 That lower control arm seems to be shared with (at least) the X5/X7. The hole is for attaching a mass damper (on the X5/X7), which apparently wasn't needed on the iX.

OUTDATED horse & buggy design, outdated handling & suspension. TRY HARDER.
@GTO33
@GTO33 Жыл бұрын
It would have been a good analysis if it was right. The name "virtual ball" is wrong by definition as the point of two ball bearings is to not have a fixed virtual axis. If you draw it up on paper you will se that the geometry makes KPI move duringe a turn. The result is that the scrub radus (distance between KPI and the wheel center) wil shift in oposite direction on oposite side of the car and with that, the torque steering forces on each side will cancel each other out. In european litterature its called variable scrub radius geometry, and it was itrodused on Audi A4/Passat B5 in 1995. Or, at least, that is what they teach in machanics class in Europe.

The "soft" tyre aero deflector cone is necessary to meet the kerb strike test attributes. The vehicle must be capable of being parked with its nose over a standard road side kerb (typically 100 to 115mm tall) without damage. By using a soft easily deflected material this means that people can park the car over such a kerb without anything getting damaged, but that parts of the underside covering /guarding can now project down into the kerb strike area to help to minimise aero drag (and wind noise too)

Two scenario's are probable to explain the post forge machining of the suspension horseshoe: 1) It was designed with a certain clearance that vehicle level kinematic testing showed to be in-sufficient, but the forge tooling was already done, hence the post machining op to increase the clearance or 2) Real world testing highlighted the need for an improved steering lock (perhaps the rear steer targets were not met) requiring front axle knuckle/upright rotation to be absolutely maximised and the machining provides the extra clearance required On my old E46 you could very occasionally actually feel the inside roadwheel go "over centre" at full lock, typically on un-even ground when the inside wheel was pushed up into the arch (towards full bump) so BMW clearly work very hard on minimising the turning radius of their products, esp the RWD ones where there is no front axle drive to complicate matters (CV joint limits)

The thick alluminium shear plates very firmly attached to the underside of the subframes are clearly to provide a cross axle stiffener to carry the (high) lateral loads at a sutiable level of stiffness. Yes, they act to protect the underside components, yes they act to smooth underfloor airflow, but the size and number of the fasteners that attached them to the subframe members tells us that the primary task is to shunt lateral loads across the subframe (high clamp load required to pass load without fretting). Of course these plates also massively increases torsional stiffness and reduces subframe trapeziodal deflection during offset (single sided) crash pulses as well, as the geometry of the shear plate clearly distributes any force in plane of the road surface. These plates also provide a simple way to tune the immediate off-centre response of the vehicle to handwheel inputs, particularly at the rear where the inital turn in feel / yaw rate is dominated by the lateral stiffness of the rear suspension

Great job of explaining all of the components and what they do. I have always looked at these items from a do-it-yourself perspective which I stopped doing in 2003. Up to that time I have always done my own repairs and the year of vehicles I worked on was late 70's or earlier. Yeah I'm old!!! I would not want to try a self repair of anything on these vehicles!! When I look at all that aluminum, I think of owning a vehicle in the 'salt belt' where they use salt in the winter. How do you think these components will hold up?

At 10:10 you are referring to the hole in the lower control arm and suspects it may be a carry over part from another vehicle. This hole is to mount a vibration dampener which is likely due to specific wheel size for that vehicle. For example, in the X5 and X7 with 21" and 22" wheels, these vibration dampeners are installed.

BMW pretty much never connect antiroll elements via the lateral links for two very good reasons: 1) You get approx half the displacement of the knuckle/upright at a point approx halfway along the lateral link. This means your Antiroll elements need twice the effective stiffness, and that puts twice the load and frictional losses into the system 2) Putting vertical loading into the lateral links really complicates the K&C bushing, and adds a large non lateral displacement to those bushes which changes the dynamic kinematics of the suspension Less premium cars with lower R&H targets do this (connect ARBs to lateral links) to save costs at the penalty of less optimum dynamics......
@Wised1000
@Wised1000 Жыл бұрын
If that is rear wheel steer it must be the shortest range of motion I have ever seen, furthermore, it seems to be connected to the suspension arm rather than to a steering knuckle. Correct me if I'm wrong but that looks more like an active toe/camber control device. Go back to your EQS video and the difference is obvious. I would doubt if the steering angle allowed is more than a few degrees. On the EQS its a full 10 degrees.

Your analysis of BMW's engineering is insightful, but I respectfully disagree on one point. While not machining out the hole in the carryover control arm can save costs, it can increase delivery and repair costs as a new part needs cataloging, separate procurement, and global stocking. Part crossover between models benefits both customers and the supply chain.
