Great ideas thank you. I did take a photo of our old bathroom carpet from the previous owner - but it had a lovely feather pattern that I thought would be good for quilting. I often take photos of floor tiles from old abbeys, cathedrals etc. Husband went on a trip with his cousin to some old abbey and I asked what the floors were like - he went back and took photos for me! LOL! Some great patterns for applique. I may never do them, but they are lovely to look at for inspiration!

My phone is absolutely filled with photos and screenshots of quilts and everything and anything that could be made into a quilt pattern. You mentioned floors, they can have beautiful mosiac patterns but you can find patterns in just about anything. Fences, baskets, wallpaper, candy shop, farmers market with all those stacked veg! I go crazy at the fish market...i love the shiny scales and markings on the fishies! Also I take a lot of pics of just colors. Like" oooh those colors go really well together, I would never have thought... " and pics of textures of course. I come into quilting from an artistic background so I just adapt to fabric what I used to use for painting and other stuff. I'm still very much iniciating my fabric journey but I have no lack of inspiration. There are many free patterns and blocks available from you tubers like Missouri quilts, Gnome Angel, Teresa Down under, and my favorite Jordan Fabrics. Donna Jordan posts weekly tutorials each week using a different pattern. She is a great teacher and has many impressive tips and tricks to pass along. Many of the patterns are from designers, but quite a few are her own patterns which she makes available to download for free from their website. I sometimes cringe at the fabric waste but usually these are patterns from designers who are catering to the precut crowd. Her own patterns seem to be more sensible. Also more recently the Questioning Quilter has a bunch of vids out on disappearing blocks which make very beautiful and easy quilts. And there are so many others, I even have a few on my list to make that are from this lovely video series you have been making. 😊

Fantastic ideas! Thank you for helping us to actually develop the skills needed to become quilters. Quilters should be able to develop simple patterns (and eventually not so simple patterns) on their own). For free patterns and some simple help, Carol Thelen has some great free patterns.

I would add that you can checkout quilting books and magazines from your public library. I have even requested quilt books through the library requests and they got what I asked for . There are digital downloads too. This is a great resource that no one seems to mention

Thank you so much for all your opinions and practical ideas. I so appreciate them. Thank you for speaking out about unnecessary waste of fabric in some patterns. Keep up the good work!

Love all these great ideas. I visited the California State Capital building recently. They have an amazing floor. There were a couple different floor levels with different patterns of tile. I took pictures of them all for quilt ideas! My travel mate thought it was odd. hehe

before I retired, the most common thing said was "use your resources". Thanks for the reminder that we have resources'

All great ideas, Maureen!! When we visited Spain and Portugal a number of years ago, I took COUNTLESS pictures of doors, ceilings, cathedrals, etc. to make into a quilt someday. Still hadn’t happened. Big sigh. Or I can just look at all the pictures again☺️☺️.

In quilters math you do all of your math without the seam allowance then add the seam allowance back in at the end.
@twinstar9
@twinstar9 Жыл бұрын
@@theopinionatedquilter Well the edge strips don't have a seam allowance until sewing to another block or a border or binding. Is that why you added another 1/2"?
