I don’t mind buying the background. Gives me a good excuse to go to the quilt shop. Love your videos.

I am a firm believer in making "scrap" quilts, totes, etc. with "what you have". Thank you.

Always find your videos interesting. I like the disappearing star points because it makes the stars less predictable and regimented. Funny how every has their own aesthetic.

Another good scrap quilt that might meet all of your criteria uses the Triple Rail Fence block. The current edition of American Patchwork and Quilting magazine has a variation of it called Rainbow Rails. I just made it in a baby size for my son’s friend. It was simple to make and used up a bunch of my scraps. I really enjoy your videos.

In her garlic knots quilt bonnie hunter uses narrow strips around the blocks with colored cornerstones. You could use the one and half inch strips with cornerstones to set your stars.

I was going crazy trying to match my scraps to a quilt. I decided to make bins for several scrappy quilts I wanted to make. I wrote the needed sizes on the bin and then sorted scraps into them. At some point when I have enough or nearly enough, I make the quilt. This seems less of a headache to me as I don't like to sort a big pile of scraps. Thanks for the great tips in this video!

Thank you for your video. Drawing on fabric is a great idea - I've done it for bag making to make sure I fully utilize my fabric & foam stabilizer; however, I've not thought about doing it for quilt making - great idea - thank you! Happy scrappy sewing!

Mother loved using unbleached domestic fabric or muslin for backgrounds. I've used it several times for backgrounds on Project Linus quilts and I love it. The quilts Mother made have held up very well. So I keep a bolt in my stash.

I've found that muslin shrinks and wears out before the rest of the fabrics in a quilt.

The quilt of stars has a weird color to it, so probably would not of co-ordinated in a "normal" quilt, so would not of been used. It is a larrrrge scrap.. I like that it lets the scraps sparkle, and the color is not black or white, which I think a lot of quilters use, me included. I was thinking of maybe making this with my off cuts of black fabric. LOL

I almost laughed out loud when you said at 4:58 "It's a little busy with all 8 points being different" as you stand next to the crazy quilt on the other side which you actually like which is insanely busy, IMO. I'm opinionated myself, and I really like the one with the brown background and strongly dislike the one on the other side. The one on the other side simply doesn't have much of a pattern to me and if I'm going to make a scrap quilt with small pieces with no visible pattern, I might as well make a crumb quilt or a true crazy quilt. Giving the eyes a place to rest and enjoy the design is what makes a lot of people like quilts. I personally dislike the ones where there is no place to enjoy the blocks that are featured - i.e. one block wonders where the hexagons are placed side by side without a border and/or quilts that are sampler quilts with no empty space between the blocks. I have found that increasing the white space (or brown or black) in a scrap quilt can make the difference between a rather blah quilt and an amazing one. The exception to things being squished and my enjoyment might be if there is color graduation or something similar that is going on with the blocks that is actually leading your eye to a point in the quilt. I always enjoy your opinions, though and like that you emphasize less waste and/or at least reminding us of what we can do with the leftovers we might create as we piece.

I find trimming the edges of the braid to be tricky to ensure precision. The no waste method would not only prevent waste, it would improve precision. This is my new method for making braids. Thank you.

I actually like the sawtooth square scrap quilt best and I was thinking that I have a lot of white tonal scraps that would take care of the background. Is there a pattern for that?
@theopinionatedquilter
@theopinionatedquilter 2 ай бұрын
It is just a sawtooth star. Decide what size you want to make the block and the center block is half the size. Then you know what size your corner squares are and the size of your flying geese. I will review it in the next video.
