Just a heads up for anyone wanting to do this for real. Wire nuts are not a reliable option to use in an automotive application. The constant vibrations have been known to make the wire nuts come loose and shorts caused by that have caused cars to catch on fire. Soldering is the recommended option.
@Iliketomakestuff8 жыл бұрын
Good to know. Thanks for saying that in a useful, helpful way. A few other comments about the wire nuts weren't helpful as to WHY it wasn't the best option. I really do appreciate it. Thanks!

In case you didn't already hear about it, Prusa announced a multi-material mod launching soon (preorder available now, but in beta until the end of November). Basically allows multiple filaments, preferably the same temperature requirements. Modelling might be a bit tricky though - sounds like you need to model up what you want each color to fill as a separate model so the slicer postscript can figure out which extruder motor to run for each area on each layer.

Hi Bob, First off, I love your videos, well produced, interesting and educational, keep it up! Secondly, a quick tip on making equally spaced features in CAD. It looked like you placed individual constraints on each hole, which takes time. Instead, you could place one hole and then use a pattern (rectangular in this case) to place the rest. It's simpler and quicker, especially when you have to place many features. There's also circular patterns that are great for when you need to make, for example, a few screw holes in a motor hold-down plate, since you can rotate the feature around the axle hole. Of course, you may have found out about this already, seeing as this video is 8 months old at this point, but if you haven't I thought I'd share it with you :)

***** as an electrical engineer (yet to graduate) ive learned that solder in high vibrantion applications can crack and break. That is why when you take ANY vital car electronical part, such as the airbag inflator, you see that some components are mechanically connected and not soldered on. Now that ive given you why I know solder is worst, tell me from your view how it is the best. I genuinely like to know.
@milkywayandbeyond6 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for the advice. What would be the best alternative to soldering in that case?
@clacker546 жыл бұрын
SMH. Wire nuts in auto application should be your last choice. Soldering only withayne some electrical tape second to last option (unless your really good a soldering and have some magical means of preventing a short). Mechanical crimp and heat shrink is the second best option. Solider mechanical crimp and heat shrink is the best way to insure against power loss due to corrosion.

Really important point you’re making about choosing the right cigarette lighter. On my Chevy, the cigarette lighter on the left is controlled by the ignition whereas the one on the right is always on which is nice if you want to charge your phone while the vehicle is off. The easiest way to test for this if you have a phone charger is to plug it in with your phone attached and see what happens with each cigarette lighter when you turn the ignition switch on or off.

+I Like To Make Stuff I like your new format for the sponsor spot, doing it like a PiP works much better as I came here to see *insert title* and whilst you were talking about Casper I was able to continue seeing you do *insert title* but hear what you had to say about your sponsor. And tucking in the sponsor spot at moments like that where in the video you're doing something tedious or repetitive is good. With the older way talking about your sponsor and interrupting the project I would've more than likely skipped it. Though I would think that you can afford to slightly bump up the size of the sponsor PiP. It could be a wee bit bigger without being too much in your face (no pun intended).

Hey! Make sure you have your amp set to High input and not Low input. You can check this by looking at the power slider on the amp. Make sure the slider is set to H and not L. That's awesome. Gotta try it out as a security alarm. How many GB does that sound module store?

Hi Bob! I'm working on a similar project, using the same amp, PA speaker, and microcontroller. However, I'm having an issue where it just doesn't seem very loud, even with the amp at full power. It's nowhere near loud enough to hear from inside another vehicle.

Nah, it's too complicated. Los Santos Customs does it faster and easier

Love this idea! What is your recommendation for the type of output (horn) for motorcycle set up? That horn you are using is way to big for a motorcycle lol

my boys and I talked about doing something just like this a couple years ago, but figured we'd need to use an arduino and program it ourselves. This board is definitely the way to go, and much smaller. We had figured we'd want to try to use a numeric keypad of sorts so we would have 10 buttons at the ready, and had thought of several cartoon characters or movie sayings we'd use, like homer simpson's DOOH!, road-runner: meep-meep, ren &stimpy: "You eediot!", R2-D2, and the obvious: Put Your Phone Down, or GO Already! and so on. Am Glad I saw this, would still like to make it like a black box under the dash and a remote key device, but probably do need a wire from each button.

I just did this today but I need to figure Out how to make it louder. I am mounting it on a humvee and the diesel drowns out that little amp and I need better speakers. I’m thinking some cheap boat type clamp speakers(like on a wakeboat) but I need to find something to push it more. Any ideas? Without making it a lot more complicated.

Great project, Bob! Did you consider a soundboard with Bluetooth and some on-board storage so you could upload wav files on demand (and use as a live speaker for parties and what not)? Do such soundboards exist?
@tandr3w2 жыл бұрын
That would be even better a soundboard like the one he uses, but with Bluetooth and more storage capacity. I do not know if there is a soundboard out there like that.
