Hey Tanya. Love the work. I have been trying to expand memory on my 4k fire stick. What all your vids formatted my 128g usb flash drive to fat32. If I look at storage I see it. So turned on the Debugging/allow download. Got Ip address downloaded adb shell app. Put in address told it to connect and it says it can't connect??? HELP Now I have know idea why this is happening..i did notice in this video when you connected it asked about allowing USB debugging. I'm not getting this option. Just says can't connect. Is there another place to allow the USB debugging to be turned on?? Not sure if that could be the issue. Any assistance would be awesome. Thanks

Thank you for this! I just finished doing this. I had some problems. My USB I accidentally formated the wrong one. So it wouldn't show up on chromebook anymore. I remembered I had a seagate external storage. Had to find an app that could partition the seagate for chromebook. I got that, partitioned it and was able to format it to FAT32. Everything good now. Hi Tanya, I followed your suggestion to increase the storage of applications using a flash drive and an OTG cable. I was very please with the results. However, today I had to reset my firestick to factory defaults in order to resolve a problem with update and wifi. Now my question are: Do I have to restart from scratch or can I bypass some steps? Are any of my applications installed on my flash drive that can be re-used or is it hopeless? I am looking forward to your response and thank you very much for all your help.

Hi. Unfortunately, when you factory reset your device, this will terminate the connection with the USB storage and you will have to start over from scratch sorry. You will more than likely have to format the USB storage to be able to use it again with the Firestick and will therefore loose all data and apps stored on it. Sorry to bring you bad news! I have done this in the past. Now I can see the USB on my tv screen saying connected. BUT it does not shoe under storage in settings, so it does not work. It does show in ES Explorer etc. I am using a 4K fire stick with the amazon newest upgrade. I have tried many different USB drives. tried a 3 port Hub and also just the OTG cable and USB drive. at one time the settings Manage APPS you could click on the app and it gave me MOVE and it would transfer to the USB. Only happened once. That was the perfect setup for me. need help

If not, try wiggling the connectors to get the lights to come on. 8) If none of the above works, restart your device. Unplug it from the power supply and unplug your power supply from the power source. Wait at least 30 seconds then re-boot everything and try again. 9) Do you have an alternative USB storage device you can use to try this with instead? 10) Do you have an alternative OTG cable you can try? Have you seen this issue on a 4k firestick. MicroSD card 64g Formatted to FAT32 partitioned to 50/50 mix. After installing third party app The app works then after a day or two the app disappears. Try to reinstall and the it shows unable to install due to a Package with same name. Tried locating Package unable to locate. Any idea what's happening here. Does it with or without external storage. Help is appreciated.

You should be able to fix this issue by one of 2 ways: 1) Power down and unplug everything and then plug everything back together BEFORE powering on. Once, everything is connected, plug the power in LAST. 2) Unplug everything and DO NOT plug in your external memory. Plug your Firestick back in and power it up WITHOUT the external memory. Any type of USB storage device can be used. What storage you use is down to you, but there are few things you need to consider when choosing your USB storage. As Fire TV devices are formatted to FAT32, the maximum size of USB storage that you can use is 2TB, however, Amazon officially recommends using USB drives that are 128GB or smaller. Amazon also recommends that high speed USB 3.0 drives are used, even though Fire TV Devices have a 2.0 USB port because USB 3.0 drives tend to have faster read/write speeds and will perform better, even when connected to USB 2.0 ports. You also need to be aware that with this process, your Fire TV device is likely to run slower when launching apps and moving around the menus as files on your USB storage cannot be read as fast as they can be read directly on the internal device storage. I did have this working on wireless connection fine with mixed 50 on 1 terabyte Seagate fat32 converted, but wanted to try wired connection (wish I didn’t now) but could not get this to connect on adb shell, so went back to wireless connection and can go through adb shell fine and amended to ‘private’ from mixed but now I cannot see my Seagate external drive on xplore anymore, can you help please, I’m on IOS 6 and used auvipal OTG.

If you used ADB to partition your storage as PRIVATE, you are no longer able to view the contents. It is inaccessible by any file explorer application. You will need to use the df -h command to see your storage space. @@FireTVSticks thanks very much for your reply Tania, I originally used 50 mixed with WiFi and it worked fine, then I later tried private to no avail on wired, I have tried again just now on wired connection and it confirmed all ok on adb shell recognition and on dx -h my /dev/block/dm2 shows 917G 76M 917G1% /mint/expand/(with long list of letters and numbers. I then went to ES file explorer and it shows USB1004 under Internal Sri age on the right side of screen, I clicked on it and it popped up with “allow the app Es file explorer to access the usb device” so I clicked “allow always” and it failed to open, now it shows as usb1007 on right side instead of usb1004 ?? I went into x-plore and cannot see my external hard drive there either, when I select ‘root’ the drop down states ‘your device seems not to be rooted’ . I don’t know what has happened as like I said it used to be all visible on xplore when I had wireless connection, it’s only when I went wired and private that I cannot see anything since, yet adb shell still acknowledged hard drive there, I’m at a loss and gutted I amended to wireless, please can you help diagnose and work your magic to help me get this to work. 🙏

I have done this before and it works great ...How ever I just got another firestick it software version is 6.0 and when I type the command this time "sm list-disks all i get is mantis:/ $ ...It is a scan disk 265 gig and I formated it to FAT32 with some softwear to do that .so I know that is correct but its not showing :8,0 or any other config please help ...I have done it once but this just wont work now

Hello & thank you for all your information. I got as far as downloading the adb shell entered my IP address and left the 5555 hit connect and it just keeps spinning. It says, please make sure the target device has network ADB enabled. (I don’t know what that means) You may need to accept a prompt on the Target device if you are connecting to it for the first time from this device. Then connection failed. Again & again. I am using 2nd generation 4k Software 5.2.8.7 My software says it’s up to date. Other cable Sans disk 32 gb. Please help & thank you very much. Debbie

Unfortunately, you cannot run the ADB process with any Fire TV device running Fire OS 5 as it is running on an older operating system and will not recognise the ADB commands. Fire OS 5 only runs on a 2nd Generation Firestick so it is not a 4K Firestick that you have, otherwise it would be Fire OS 6. You can watch this video to help you to add external storage to your Fire OS 5 device so that you can at least use that storage if you do things like download content from apps for example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/goKaf5Rjnd-YjpY If you are looking to upgrade: the 4K Max, 4K Firestick, 3rd Gen Fire TV Stick and the Lite Fire TV Stick are all capable of expanding the storage. Hello Tanya, In the xplore app, my external drive appears and I moved a couple of apps from the App Mgr/Installed folder over to it and I can see them there. I then open one at a time in the external drive and it asked if I want to install it which I did but they are installed back into the Apps Mgr/installed folder so when I go into Settings/Applications/Manage Installed Apps and look for the image next to app telling me it was installed to the external drive, there is no icon/image there. I followed your instructions about formatting the drive to FAT32 and also using the partition software due to the size of the drive, then use the Remote ADB Shell to add the drive. I am using Firestick Version 6, my external drive brand is VenderCo and it is partitioned w/1TB for storage, I am using Win. 10 Professional Home Edition and I did not get any error messages during the process.

There could be several ways to resolve this. 1) Are you sure you are using a 4K Firestick? 2) Are you certain you are entering your IP address correctly? Double-check and try again. 3) If you are certain you are entering your IP address correctly but you are still getting the same results, you could try entering the local host name instead: 127.0.0.1 and try the process again. 4) Make sure and double-check you are spelling sm list-disks correctly. 5) Make sure you are entering the correct drive numbers after you run sm list-disks for your device as they may be different to 8,0. 6) Is your storage formatted to FAT32? 7) Do you have enough power to supply the equipment? Ideally, you should be powered by the mains i.e. power socket on the wall 8) If none of the above works, restart your device. Unplug it from the power supply and unplug your power supply from the power source. Wait at least 30 seconds then re-boot everything and try again. 9) Do you have an alternative USB storage device you can use to try this with instead? 10) Do you have an alternative OTG cable you can try? Hi Tanya, great video, i wish i saw that yesterday when i installed my usb stick and lost so many hours with trials and errors with a too succinct written tutorial. I still have an issue, and i'm afraid i can't do anything about it. Except X-Plore, the apps can't write to the external storage, which prevents kodi from launching now (it hangs at waiting for external storage), and prevents me to transfer the app data from another huge app. Is there a way to allow the write permissions to the external storage ?

@@FireTVSticks thx for the answer, i did everything, but i guess my firestick 4k is a slow learner 😅 After a restart a couple hours later, everything works smoothly, new apps are directly stored on the extended private partition, and kodi worked perfectly. Btw, my formatting was mixed, with 30% internal, and 70% external (with a 64GB usb3 stick)

I followed this video to add a 64MB san disk flash drive to my firestick 4K. the firestick formatted the flash drive. I did not partion, but used option 1 to allocated all storage to system storage. I have downloaded x-plore, but it went to internal storage. I watched your video on moving apps from internal to external, but none of the apps show as being on the external drive. I clicked them to move with the check box, and they showed up in downloader folder, but they do not indicate they are on the external drive. suggestions.

Hi Tanya Thanks for the tutorial. Everything worked as shown except when doing the disk partition the San disk 64 Gb USB 3.0 flash drive did not disconnect and reconnect the external drive. Nix on the above question, and thanks again for this GREAT video. After posting, I saw your answer to the same question elsewhere in comments, i.e., the portion allocated to system storage (for me, that was 100% of the new drive) doesn't show up on the native "About/Storage" menu. I've now confirmed the new memory is working, by buying, installing and testing a game that previously exceeded the original system memory and wouldn't install. I added SO much system storage (256GB) this should never be an issue again with this FireStick, and assume I will have to use the ADB app to periodically check available memory on the new drive ... thanks for showing us all how to do THAT, too. One problem I had on the "steps" was that my FireStick menu wasn't showing any "developer options" tab ... I had to pause the video and do a separate Google search to learn how to activate that tab. Yes, this can be an issue when disconnecting your firestick. You can fix this issue by one of 2 ways: 1) Power down and unplug everything and then plug everything back together BEFORE powering on. Once, everything is connected, plug the power in LAST. 2) Unplug everything and DO NOT plug in your external memory. Plug your Firestick back in and power it up WITHOUT the external memory. Then when everything has loaded back up, plug your external memory in. One of these methods should resolve this for you. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching 😊👍❤️

As far as I know, a software update has caused issues with ADB debugging, making it impossible to add storage using this method at this time. I'm not sure when this issue will be resolved. Sorry. I had earlier followed your instructions to add a memory stick moor added storage wgicun worked fine. I swapped out this fire stick to another tv. I executed your procedural steps and got to the x-pore download attempt which did not show up on the added storage but was shown on the manage applications list. I then tried to go to file link to see if I could download anything else but was stymied with a no internet access message. My internet connection is/was active. What codes are necessary to get a download executed? Your instructions are very clear and easy to follow. Is there another video I can reference to start from ground zero to get things back on track. Maybe reset the fire stick with the power off option. My OTG connections are correct. To be honest, I’m completely stumped about what I should do too get it back on track as it was before. I am using OS6 4K fire stick. TIA.. sorry for being bothersome. I’m not completely comp illiterate but I’m definitely not at your level of expertise in these matters..

I am back !! The power issue has come back and reared it’s ugly head. The Firestick keeps rebooting. It is making a beeping sound off and on before it decides to reboot. I have to assume my Seagate 2TB storage does not have its own power. What are my options ? Get a different storage device? Open the Downloader app, then select the Search box. Enter 28907, then select Go. Wait for my Downloads page to load fully, then press the Menu (or Options) button on your remote 2x to enter full-screen mode. Select the Tools category from the list at the top of the page. Or move down to view the Tools category. Find Remote ADB Shell in the list, then select it. On the next page, move down until you see the LIGHT BLUE Download button. Select the Download button, then select Install. When the app has finished installing, select Delete 2x to remove the installation file, as it’s no longer required.

Be aware that with this process, your Fire TV device is likely to run slower when launching apps and moving around the menus as files on your USB storage cannot be read as fast as they can be read directly on the internal device storage. If a family member gets their ip address from their stick whilst connected at their home address but then bring said Firestick to my house could I enter their ip address at my house (different ip address) and once all of the processes are completed and they return back home would everything work as it should? I'm not sure if it would work, as I haven't tried it. However, I assume that changing the IP address might affect the connection to the external USB. If you decide to try it and you succeed, please let me know. Good luck!

Thanks for the good videos, I have a question I’m trying to set up a external storage space on a firestick version 6 with a sandisk memory stick but it doesn’t seem to be working I typed into ADB shell sm partition disk:8,0 private. I’m not sure if it’s working because it’s only showing /dev /block/ dm-1 but not /dev /block/dm-2 which means it’s showing the internal memory but I’m not sure it’s registering the external. I down loaded ADB shell on the downloader as suggested and the format is FAT32. Any ideas on what might be happening? Thanks.

I'm sorry, my downloads have been updated, and ADB Shell can now be accessed once the page has loaded by selecting TOOLS (from the choose a category menu), then scrolling down the list to find and click on REMOTE ADB SHELL. Then, please scroll down the page again till you see an aqua/blue DOWNLOAD button and click it to download the Remote ADB Shell app.

Followed all your steps everything was fine until I hit the end after I tried to partition, hit RUN and if flipped to Fire Tv, deleted the ADB install. Running version 6.2.8.0 Nord VPN set to Canada any ideas

Retried with VPN off. After the first time I checked the format on the stick and it was partitioned to E and F and both were at FAT not FAT32. Used Rufus to reset to FAT32 no partition and started the process. All went well until I got the List Disks. It showed Disk:8,0 next line read /system/bin/sh:8,0 not found. I continued and tried to partition to private the checked withDF -H and received nothing below that. How do I correct the system/bin error?

Finally success, I waited about 10 minutes it then showed 28g available and tried DF -H and it showed 28g available on a 32g stick. Downloaded 2 apps and they went to external. Thank you for your assistance. Can't get Pluto TV to work. I'll keep trying a different source. Some will only work if VPN is set to USA.

Good show, Tanya! I have an OTG cable with 3 USB ports on it. I'm wondering if I can install 2 flash drives - one for external storage and one for internal storage? Or I wonder what would happen if I made each of them a 50/50 mix - which one would be used internal storage for new apk installs?

Yes, you can add 2 flash drives. One for internal and one for external. As far as I am aware, you cannot mix storage on both as formatting a 2nd storage drive would override the 1st. Thank you for watching 😊👍❤️

Hi Tanya, Great video and the best I've seen so far on setting up firestick. Can you explain why it will not work with the Amazon ethernet adaptor? I would prefer ethernet for streaming over wi fi. Any resolution other than getting a usb type ethernet adaptor.

You video explained it all and all I needed was to correctly format usb stick in Fat 32 and not Ex Fat and also to remove the amazon ethernet adaptor. May go for a usb hub and usb ethernet if I find wi fi unreliable for streaming. Thank you so much.

Here are a few things to check to help discover why you are getting an error: First, check your IP address to ensure it is correct and hasn’t changed. Next, check you have input the IP Address correctly. Try entering the local hostname instead of your IP Address. Enter 127.0.0.1 and try again. Unplug everything, including your Firestick and power supply. Wait at least 30 seconds, then plug everything back in and try again. Go into Settings and turn off ADB Debugging. Then, turn it back on and try again. Check which version of Fire OS is running on your Firestick. You can only use Remote ADB Shell with Fire TV devices running Fire OS 6 and 7. If you’re not sure, refer to firetvsticks.com/how-to-increase-firestick-storage/. Ensure you have input the list-disk command correctly. The correct line to enter is: sm list-disks Check your storage is formatted to FAT32. If unsure, refer to firetvsticks.com/how-to-format-usb-storage-to-fat32/. The USB storage may be incompatible with the Firestick. For example, it may be too big or need to be formatted correctly. In addition, some brands work better than others. If you’re unsure what size USB storage to use or which brands work best, refer to firetvsticks.com/how-to-increase-firestick-storage/. There could be an issue with the OTG cable or adapter. Try replacing it with a new one if you can. There may be insufficient power to supply the USB storage drive and the Firestick. Ideally, connect your Firestick to a power outlet with the power adapter and cable that came with the Firestick.

Hi Tracy Thanks for video I followed all the steps and it said it worked but storage has not increased, I’m fire stick 4 k and it’s a 32 mb flash drive which I did 50/50 have tried multiple times now I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong , has it been patched in a recent update?

I have tried to do everything in this video but after I put in my IP adress and press connect I get a message saying "Connection Failed.". As far as I know, a software update has caused issues with ADB debugging, making it impossible to add storage using this method at this time. I'm not sure when this issue will be resolved. Sorry. However, Fire OS 8 devices can easily expand the storage through the Firestick settings.
