Jordan, my 5yr old watched this video yesterday morning. He did not look away. He was completely engaged. I took him out to the pond this afternoon. He had it nailed in three casts. You guys are building foundations for mentors to build on. Keep up the great work. Your humility speaks volumes of encouragement.

Let me echo that comment. I'm just learning how to fish and these videos keep me lit up and operating. I've gone out to practice casting twice now and man, it's so, so fun just to practice the basics. I'm going to see about a charter with Nick very soon. I think that would be a good official beginning to my fishing career.

Great informative vid but when exactly do you close the bail after the cast? When it hits the water?
@DylanO05052 жыл бұрын
@@Jordanwoodworking that’s fine or depending on what exactly your fishing if it needs to be on the bottom you’ll throw more weight on the line and wait for it to sink then close it

I have used baitcast reel all my life (I'm 72) and just decided I wanted to learn spinning. I thought you did an excellent job of teaching someone who is new to spinning reels how to cast. Much appreciated. Many times people make their instruction too complicated or over the beginner's head....to me your presentation was perfect. Thanks. Larry

I'm just the opposite I've used spinning reels or open face or as I've always called them open face flip top lol. And now I'm learning how to use a bait cast. So far I've got the birds nestling down. 😂 can't believe I just spent $825.00 on to bait cast rod and reel set ups for this kind of beat down. But I'm practicing.

Enjoyed watching, but you missed one of the key elements - when to release the line from the index finger during the cast. It is one of the hardest things for beginners to figure out the timing of that release. You see lots of lures plunking in the water at their feet, or dropping behind them, until they get that timing just right.
@billrhondeau93723 жыл бұрын
I think he said to release it 3/4 ths of the way through the cast. Point your index finger at the target. Aim and let it work
@JohnSpinhirne2 жыл бұрын
@@billrhondeau9372 I agree with what you said but I did not pick that up until the very end, I hope you are correct. I haven't fished in 40+ years and that small detail could make this very frustrating.

Now I understand what I was doing wrong, I have been failing to release my index finger at the proper moment.

Great tips! I'm in my mid 40s and have just taken up the hobby. One tip I'd like to add that helped out me a lot is finger placement. I was holding my line too high, right up against the pole. When I lowered my finger a bit so it was about half way between the pole and the reel I had much better success. Thanks for all the great vids and info guy's!

Hi Jordan aged 71 I am just starting fishing here in he UK so I am looking for as much information as I can get. As consequence of that I have subscribed to a great number of channels and amongst those you are up there in the category of being one of the best. How you describe a Spinning Reel with regard to its parts and how to use it is just great. I've already realised that I need to aim at a target to be more precise when casting. I noticed you use a little bit heavier line (unless I am missing something). When we fish for rainbow trout in Southern Missouri, most of the anglers are using anything between 2-6 lb test. Just wanted to hear your thoughts on that as well. Your channel has absolutely inspired me to get out and fish more. I have taken several 3 hour trips to fish and camp because of what you have showed me. I am very appreciative for that.

I love your videos! They have helped me so much! I did have to learn to flip my bail over manually after I cast my line. Initially, I would just start reeling in my line after I cast it, letting the bail flip over as I reeled in. But I ended up with a lot of knots in my line. I learned that I was supposed to flip it manually and now I don't get the knots. Yes, I'm a complete newbie.

nice explanation but what I see everyone trying to teach fails on explaining that the finger on the line before casting is not letting the line un spool until the finger at what moment should be straighten so can let the line flow away because the position of the index finger is the one that releases or holds the line at a precise moment... I had a bad habit of holding the line between the finger and the rod by pressure and had bad casts most of the time until I saw why but no one talks about that finger release moment of when. Thanks for your time to teach the basics.

One great place to learn how to cast is find a little league baseball field - stand on 2nd base area and aim many casts at 1st base....turn and same to 3rd....same to home plate...nothing around to snag and you practice your "good side" and your "weak side". Practice overhead - practice side arm in case there are trees out at the spots
