You are being too kind in your description of the “p38 enthusiast”. I make zero excuses for my or others behavior. We are bloody masochists, and we love every minute of it. You are spot on with your review of the P38, you get the rock solid, confident driving experience of a classic d1/2 or defender but with a significant level of refinement from the p38. However, unlike the d1 or defender, The P38 still feels modern, has the power to keep up with todays traffic and very usable every day.

My FIRST CAR was an 02 Range with 200k. Daily drove it all the way up until it had 250k. It had just about every issue you can think of, except the EAS! Drove it to 32 states, I miss it every day.

Nice ride!!! Have a ‘00 same color, put about 10k on it so far and it’s awesome, I’ve had to do some tinkering as you mentioned, stupid stuff, windows going up cock eyed and sunroof leaking, but it’s a beast off and on road, previous owner of multiple land cruisers and this is a fun head turner!!

I will always want one. I will never own one. I own several LandCruisers and my neighbor owns several LandRovers. We love wrenching, so I am very often over at his place working on his. I love how they feel - when they run. The interiors feel stately. But he’s been left stranded so many times, and it seems he’s constantly cycling through them because they seem to need major work.

Intrigued by the P38… scared away by the tiny safari style shorts! 😅 These are cool but flawed vehicles but respect the effort to keep them alive in the public’s mind. As a long suffering RRC owner I know the addiction is real.

Many thanks for the great review! Was an interesting test to see how long thru before I reached for the comments :) I know I must fall into the addict category but my wife definitely isn't. The look she gave after being in our D1 on springs vs P38 on airbags indicated it's much more than just a maintenance item to deal with. After they have been castrated they lose the (sometimes vain but nonetheless) useful benefit of raising to deal with ruts or in town, big kerbs etc is I think an intrinsic part of a P38. Also the 4.0 has its charms. Revs a little cleaner and tho a little lacking in torque, I think it a more pleasant 'pressing-on' driving experience. Speaking of that, what absolutely transforms the on-road driving experience is replacing the often too wide 255 or 265 width tyres with 235s. Wider tyres really seem to suck power and reduce handling feel. My 2c :) Obviously a P38 tragic 😅

I’d deal with a GEMS p38. Those can be neat trucks. Everyone in a while in Australia / New Zealand you’ll see a manual diesel with cloth seats which are cool. The holy grail is one of the very few manual trans 4.0 gasoline trucks with non digital standard climate control. I saw one in Spain a while back. If you could somehow do a nervous system transplant with a gems d1 it’d simplify it to the point of being usable. Get rid of that becm and all the alarm crap. They are beautiful and they still have normal axles.

In what way is the EAS system not sustainable? I have owned three of these in total, and still have 2. Both on air. One of which has 298000km on the clock, and have experienced 0 EAS problems. It takes you one evening of your precious time to overhaul the valve block and air compressor (yes, anyone can do it, if you can work your smartphone, you can do this…) , a set of new Dunlop air springs will be $300,p. Once these items are new/rebuild, the EAS should last you 6-10 years.. Definitely sustainable. Also, the P38 was never available with coils. FOR A REASON.. Having owned one that i bought with a coil spring bodge(and promptly converted back to EAS) i can tell you that a P38 on coils is pointless. Buy a Land Cruiser instead.. The EAS is very much a large part of the charm and function of this vehicle. Honestly, if you are too cash strapped to maintain the EAS, what other more expensive and critical systems on the car are you neglecting??? If you tell me you removed the EAS because you’re a knob, and don’t mind ruining the ride and handling of your range rover, FINE, but don’t use “EAS is not sustainable” as an excuse, because that’s a LIE, and your own obscured opinion. There are P38 owners out there that do extreme offroading and overlanding in their P38’s on EAS. No coil setup can ever come close to a properly maintained EAS, not in handling, ride or safety.

It angers me when someone makes a video of P38’s and suggest that the EAS be removed to improve the ownership experience??.. It’s an integral part of the car. Why not just then also replace the Rover V8 with an LS, or some modern turbo 4-banger that makes more power? Would you buy a Porsche 911 and rip out the engine from the back and fit it in the front because you believe you will be improving it’s handling? Same principle. If you buy a P38, EAS is part of the charm and quirks of the thing. A lack of knowledge of the operation of these EAS systems is the main cause of problems. Manuals and information on properly maintaining the EAS system is freely available online.

@@namibgtv6 Making a problematic vehicle less problematic as it ages should never be considered a detracting factor. In fact, it will encourage additional use and longevity, and make the truck accessible for more buyers. Then, they can own a backup p38 with EAS to tinker with.
