It seems to me that people with addictions face a couple big internal obstacles to change and I think you alluded to both of them today. One is they have a strong aversion to being seen as wrong. The other is that they don’t want to be seen as vulnerable and weak. I would love to learn more about how the techniques you talk about today help them get past these obstacles.

The addicts I deal with know their totally lacking in their responsibilities but it’s not enough to even initiate any type of treatment nor does going to prison/jail over and over

My husband went to rehab and got clean from pills but started self medicating with weed months after he got home, he refuses to go to any kind of treatment/meetings and when I try to talk to him about it we end up in a disagreement. I’m putting in work and going to CR, it’s very frustrating feeling like I’m the only one fighting for my marriage.

To add. We openly talk about my brothers keeper and faith and we openly talk about inspirational dissatisfaction. Because. We can identify and accept when we need prayer and rest. We can identify that yes we did something self sabotaging but that is in step with recognizing our daily walking into inspirational dissatisfaction moments. We can say that we are taking steps towards problems getting bigger. We can accept ourselves as having some good grasp on our personal scale of how we are personally not being pro active on our behalfs. In order to avert having to hit flat bottom. My son came up with a saying. He says. You better check yourself before you wreck yourself.

My husband has the idea he is better than any other alcoholic. They are losers, they have 4 DUIs, they are calling in sick because they are hung over, while at the same time he is doing all of it himself. He also argues 12 step is not for him. He can't explain why. It just isn't for him. I have told him i know you are having difficulty with handling stress, but he disagrees. I don't know how to respond to him anymore. I now avoid him. Not the best way to handle a marriage.

Oh Sue... don't jyst dont go BACK into an abusive relationship. It's not WHAT to sa to work it out with him, it's no longer your responsibility to say the RIGHT thing.. just be so glad to get away and NOT have to put up with being his target of blame. Absolutely he sounds like a Narcissist. Whether he is or not doesn't matter as long as hes drinking he will BEHAVE like one! Hes not accepting blame, hes learned to say words to suck you back in!

Are there alcoholics that can just drink heavily and have no consequences? My person drank, and drank, every day until he fell asleep. So much vodka. He’s had zero consequences. He never misses work, makes tons of money, and just keeps drinking . He ruined our relationship by cheating on a bender. That’s the only thing . And he lost me, but that wasn’t enough to matter . He keeps drinking.

If I said I know you feel the pressure, he would spin it around and blame me or the kids, so how does that work?

Hi Amber ,,my addicted loved one ,, ,, back story , I am an identical twin,, and she was a fraternal non identical twin,,, . Her sister had had 3 children, and by the age of 34 my ADO was under pressure from all angles to follow suit . Problem , having seen the changes to her sister , she didn’t want to even think about it , if she did ,she broke out in spots . This 💭 left an empty space where her future lay ,,, so “” permanent party girl” hitting the drinks 🍷 . Getting some responsibility into her life was difficult as she’d dodged that one . At the time everyone had a baby 👶 my sister had 3 , her other sister, all her work colleagues. It’s not the whole story but it is a factor , especially the empty space and the way she held a bottle.

Hi Amber. I ask my husband to spend more time with me and he avoids the situation. I believe its because he knows that i dont agree with how much he drinks and he has shame and needs to hide the amount from me. I know he is thinking how do i spend more time with her and still drink the same amount. He is high functioning . How do i appriach this. I have done all things wrong and been in the bad guy role but dor about a year now have been watching your videos and have stooped being bad guy.

I understand what you are saying but you can call it "flowers," "addiction," or even substance abuse. Doesn't matter what you call it, it is a problem. My recovered friends (ranging from 5 to 25 years sober) say, with no problem, "It's addiction" or it wouldn't be a problem. The trick is owning the problem, that's the issue
