What are the long term effects of adding small amounts of white sugar to concrete? We cycled one ounce through the hopper of our line-pump and checked back on it 30 days later:

I used a pound in my 47. Mixed the shit out of it. Had my inspector buddy take a sample of it, at 30 days, it broke at the same PSI as the rest. 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️

I got stuck with line job today. 50ft of 2.5 off the boom to fill sono tubes. Concrete was an hour late, and by the time we were done it was going off pretty good. I made sure to grease all my hopper corners, and back splash to avoid sticking. I put my first sponge in, filled the 90 with water, and 1 handful of brown sugar. Also threw 2 handfuls in the hopper. Washed out in 20 minutes. My coworker who’s a 18 year veteran was blown away. I won’t leave the yard without at least 5lbs of sugar in my side box, a blow out cap, and air line. Much easier than a boom party!

You should do bentonite as well on the break test
@canadianconcretepumper19792 ай бұрын
That’s actually a good one as well. Best example would be to maybe just build a small form and pump the prime directly into it, then strip 7 days later. Wouldn’t require a break test to get the point across with bentonite I don’t think 😂😂😂

In Australia it doesn’t kill it, the mixes are rough it doesn’t brake down like your concrete brings the cream to top. It still goes off under the cream it’s hard

Hey Scott you and Dan did a sample the while back of this I remember this I don't understand why it's being brought up again when you and Dan already proved this when you guys did the brown sugar and the Coke and all that test and how many days it was like three samples you guys did of Coach brown sugar and something else there and the samples what they were like after you had those I don't understand
@canadianconcretepumper19792 ай бұрын
So this one was more of a response video to a good bit of feedback which I’d received (mostly through other social media platforms) from guys claiming that sugar just slows the concrete down rather than killing it completely. The point here was to show that even very smaller amounts of sugar will ruin concrete forever, and as I think we discovered with the stuff which had only a very small amount of white sugar added to it, this is not always the case. Without revealing too much, we’ve got a video coming next Saturday which takes this even on step further. The results are quite shocking, or at least to me they were. Stay tuned my friend, it will all come together and make more sense once that video has dropped. I promise 😁

I know you know this, but a really effective way to homogenize the mix is to dissolve the sugar into some water first.

My only issue is that the sugar brings up the slump of the concrete so much on its own, adding additional water can sometimes get it a little too sloppy (just makes more of a splashy mess when I’m pumping out the hopper). 100% agree with what you’re saying, I’m just weird/OCD in some/many ways 😂😂😂
@canadianconcretepumper19792 ай бұрын
@@BenBNC so I’ve got a video going up in the next week at two which speaks precisely to what you’re saying. I was SHOCKED at the results.

First off, you don't add it after it's mixed. You add to the water to ensure even distribution. Secondly, if you actually attempt to distribute evenly throughout the mix, it not only acts as a retarder, but it also slightly (around 4%) increases the strength of the final 28-day cure. I recently poured 8 m³ with 300 grams of sugar per 40kg bag of cement, and it's super strong and park my tractor on it every day. Very nice. If you're pouring at low temperatures, I would agree not to add sugar, but in that situation you wouldn't be adding retarder anyway, but adding an accelerator. You're wearing a jacket and i can see your breath and there's frost on the bags. 😂 Totally FOS 😂
