There's no problem with people not liking things, but a lot of his comments were based on what only sounded like a few songs that have been released in the charts and not over albums. That's like.. eg, watching 2 football games of Ronaldo playing badly, and saying he's a bad player when he's clearly not 🤷🏻♂️ His comments about Frusciante having an expressionless technique were also wrong, as there's lots of examples of him playing in the style he mentioned Also said that keidis suddenly found some new energy the way he was dancing around when he's been doing this since the 80's There's having opinions, and then there's misinformed due to not actually evaluating further beforehand.

I think your RHCP video was pretty accurate, I love them as a band, however I'd agree on your take of Frusciante's lack of vibrato. If I remember correctly when he re-joined the band for Californication he was suffering from not having played the guitar for years, having recently recovered from his heroin addiction and the burns he suffered when he burnt his apartment down whilst high. So he stated at the time his guitar parts where simpler, as he could no longer play as well as before. Though, his style has been that way on most recordings post BSSM. His solo stuff is really worth checking out though, and his guitar style is unique enough that you know it is him playing after hearing only a few notes. Keep up the great work, your videos are ace!

It might help if you listened to more of his work, but it actually might not! He's really not everyone's cup of tea. I think some of us connected with his solo albums on a super emotional level, creating some overly protective super fans. I think the reasons it annoyed me was 1. He clearly stated he hadn't listened to RHCP much. So obviously listed to 0 of his solo stuff. 2. He sh*t sandwiched him. Just to point out, The Darkness being a "One Hit Wonder" very much depends on where you live. They certainly weren't a One Hit Wonder in the UK! They had a few top 20s in Norway and New Zealand too. Not to mention the fact that they've also had 7 top 20 albums in the UK... But don't let that take away from the guy's narrative or anything.

The Darkness is probably not a one hit wonder in the UK because they are from the UK. Here in the US, the only song they are known for is "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" in 2003. That's literally the only song I know by them. It's a great song and I'm sure they have other good songs. They're probably a great band, but I haven't heard literally any other song or hit by them.

But yeah, I appreciate your point, but my point there was that they're only considered a One Hit Wonder to some. I accept that they are to people from the US, like yourself, but it doesn't make them unsuccessful or anything like that.

I like Frusciante's playing, his tone, chord voicing, and the Hendrix influence so it surprised me you would single him out. I have difficulty with Anthony Kiedis. On one hand I love singers that aren't traditional singers like Joe Strummer or Lou Reed, and Kiedis has potential in that way, but they overproduce the hell out of him and pitch correct him to perfection. That defeats the point of having that kind of singer for me and is the worst of both worlds, where someone isn't a great singer, but they aren't adding chaos or excitement with that raw, frenetic kind of energy. Pre the advent of auto tune/Californication I can handle the band more so. Sounds more sincere to me.

RHCP is my #1 all time fave band, that having been said I’ve grown from being the stereotypical “I love everything they put out” type of fan to someone who can take a step back and review and analyze what they’re doing. At my age now, 44, I don’t need to be called “the biggest fan EVER”, kids do that, so I’m more critical of them (while still saying they’re my #1 fave band). Kiedis’s vocals are atrocious. The inherent problem with his vocals is this - his vocals are meant for a younger man. That chaos, energetic vibe you had mentioned. That chaos doesn’t go well with someone of his age (50+ yr old). So what is he to do? He has to tone down the energy and chaos and the problem is his type of singing doesn’t vibe well with “toned down”. So you get what we have now, overproduced vocals for a singer singing song that doesn’t match his capability.
@edmanning2742 жыл бұрын
@@HellAtlantic That's an interesting insight... I might argue that he demonstrated he could sing well (and quietly) on songs like I Could Have Lied. The overproduction never bothered me for Californication and By the Way (although Zephyr Song really pushed it)... but became a bit too much from Stadium Arcadium onwards. But he's definitely terrible live! Still adore them though :)

Hello Justin. I enjoyed your RHCP critique. On the subject of John Frusciante's solo playing style and in particular your description of his often lack of expression of the vibrato. My understanding is how a guitarist deploys this levels expression is based on the velocity of strike upon the guitar string accompanied by how they then bend the string in order and let the tone waver as it rings out - Although I'm not an expert I believe this derives from the rhythm and blues school of music. I'm sure everyone will agree that this is a slightly dangerous and sexy sound indeed however. The problem however is that it's such a common thing to do for a guitarist that it's sort become bit obvious and dare I say a bit cheesy. It's interesting to note that John Frusciante style of playing does indeed incorporate this bluesy expressionism (he is a huge fan of Hendrix and RHCP have faithfully covered his songs) however I would say that this lack of bluesy expressionism has become more prevalent in this playing style since he returned to the band in 1999 for the Californication album. I think it's a conscious effort on his part to try and find new ways of playing the guitar in a way that it less 'showy' or bandstanding which in turn makes me think that he's channelling other influences such as perhaps the Punk and post punk guitar playing styles of people like John McGeogh (Magazine, Siouxsie & The Banshees, PIL) or Bruce Gilbert (Wire). Forgive my crassness when I consider this more restrained or angular style of playing as sounding more European. ...Anyway Good work! Thank you.

The studio version of Californication's guitar solo was very last minute. John just couldn't really find it. And he played so simply because he was just relearning to play after a debilitating drug addiction. Plus, he made the conscious decision to play as a part of a band as opposed to being a showy guitarist. I do think the biggest reason we're so defensive about John is watching him live is a truly moving experience. The man bleeds through his instrument and it's why the Chili Peppers most notable work is the stuff with John. There's a chemistry within those 4 and even more specifically within Chad, Flea, and John that is just magic. Especially live. So, yeah. I guess John Frusciante is the sacred cow because we know what music means to him and how purely he goes about creating it. He's a very rare dude.

His solos are understated. His solos are doing what the song needs. If someone was inclined to listen to balls out guitar soloing they can listen to Van Halen. Can Halen’s songs were just what you listened to to get to Eddie’s solos. Frusciante is not gonna let his virtuoso get in the way of what the song needs. I also think that’s why he’s left the band twice before - perhaps he feels he needs to be limited in what he does for the sake of the songwriting that eventually the restrictions he puts on himself gets to him. Granted, we don’t live in a world where rock music is synonymous with “Eddie Van Halen type guitar solos” anymore. And to be honest he isn’t a guitar soloist in the same tier as chops as Eddie Van Halen but yeah, he can do way more than what he typically does in RHCP.

People identify themselves partly by the media they love. Whether it’s music, film, television etc. When someone says something negative about something that person loves, their ego kicks into fight mode and perceives a threat and they feel the need to strike back. There’s a large psychological aspect to fandom. I don’t care if someone calls my favorite band the worst pile of shit they’ve ever heard, they’re making a statement about a band, not ME. So who gives a shit, it’s just music. Also, thanks for releasing videos where you actually give your HONEST opinion. I don't understand the discontent. Frusciante is arguably my favorite musician and I loved your video, and you weren't incorrect about your assessment of his playing, you stated an opinion (which about his playing was actually largely positive with regards to your review) and I guess that's people's issue? What you said about his sound is in fact exactly why I like his style. In his second stint with the band he would consistently reference Bernard Summer of Joy Division/New Order, and it's very clear that this is one of the roots of his particularly style that he expanded upon starting all the way back to John's first solo record in 92. Joy Division/New Order song "ceremony" is a freight train to a song like rhcp's "scar tissue" (both the bass and the lead). That clean, no vibrato or "expression" sound to me is what makes it often such a vulnerable sound. You also know this is a person capable of playing on most any level he would like, but intentionally is choosing this super simplistic style particularly during the Californication/By The Way era. It's also often a balance to the rhythm section which are two people who essentially are also out front as well. He's back in the band. Who fucking cares. Justin, you rule and I love your videos, you're also a fucking sweet guitar player and I like your "expression", you twat (don't know why that was needed but it felt appropriate cause I'm American or something). I saw The Darkness in 2004 in the Detroit area and you guys destroyed and you rode a tiger above the crowd. The light also beamed off your pickups like spotlights, I got a Darkness belt buckle... I mean, nothing against Greta Thunberg and all, but I don't think her body of work trumps that of Led Zeppelin.

Got to be honest, I'm not a fan of the darkness but I do appreciate the musicianship and songwriting skills of you folks. Saying that I love your videos and it's good to hear a talented dudes opinion and ideas. P.s please never never compose a Christmas song again haha.

Justin sorry for being that guy that asks something off topic, but is there any chance you could do a video about how you became a singer, what exercises you done to have such a great range, falsetto… anything at all about your vocal journey. Love ye man x

How someone can look themselves in the mirror after writing that last comment is beyond me. If Greta wrote songs anywhere near the level of Led Zepplin then I would have heard of them before Justin did a video on them. Garbage band

I’ve just recently discovered your podcast Justin. And although we have different taste on a lot of things we have similar tastes on others. What I really like about your podcast is your honesty of opinion coupled with your technical music knowledge and ability. I think a lot of Rockstars would be reluctant to critique other fellow rock artists. For fear of that somehow hurting their career. So I’ll give you credit for the fact that it takes more balls for you to be a critic then a non-rockstar

That's it. I can't take it anymore. Subscribed. That little glance towards the camera whilst reading the Greta comment got me. As a youtuber you are phenomenal. Experienced, well spoken and bloody charming. As for the Chili Peppers, not once have I ever heard anything interesting from them. Bland as all hell and almost a waste of talent as far as musicianship is concerned.

Justin. I was hoping that you would comment on the one concerning and confusing part of the Chili Peppers song. The vocals. We are all wondering what is up with the pirate Irish accent that Anthony has. What are you're thoughts?

I saw The Red Hot Chili Peppers live back in the eighties after Freaky Styley came out and they were phenomenal - Heard Blood Sugar Sex Magic and found it really disappointing and concluded that they'd done lost their mojo. If anyone wants to set up a 'The Producers' style money-losing record label I am available to be your A&R man.

My brethren. I really enjoy your cast. Your pod. Dig it intensely. I was also triggered by your description of John Fuscianti. I didn’t disagree with you about his technique. I couldn’t break his technique down with your musical IQ if my life depended on it. However, as an “accomplished” musician I feel if you listened to the solo in “Mexican Maid”, you might see a different side. Either way keep it up mate. Dig your style too. I recently downloaded all your albums and have “Permission to Land” on my list of vinyl yo buy. Appreciate you. ✌🏻

I agree with your view. The peppers early stuff was frenetic and quirky and super funky and I loved it until Mother's Milk. From BSSM to now they've evolved and settled into a comfortable melodic space with some elements of their early funk sound but that is more "radio friendly" and sells a lot of tickets and obviously albums. Good for them and everyone who likes that.

I really enjoy hearing your honest, genuine, and thoughtful opinions whether I agree with them or not. I especially like diverse points of view in general , even if they don't align with my own. These types of forums promote understanding and an exchange of ideas. I've had views (on bands for example) that have been changed, or revised if you like, and I've had the same affect on others. I wouldn't want to live in an echo chamber, I'd imagine that would be rather boring wouldn't it?

I suspected as much regarding the title of the initial Chilies critique,ie.as smart audience draw for another installment .. .. Makes sense, and it was so amusing the way you answered too it,with basically a verbal nod, admitting and playing it down... Hilarious though.. Great pick of a critique subject whether we agree or not. Yes they were quite different from the lot of their time in many ways.

Re: John Frusciante…a lot of what you say makes sense. I was a huge fan of blood sugar sex magik, and in some ways underwhelmed by him as a guitarist for the first couple albums after he returned (independent of whether I like the songs or not). But stadium Arcadium turned my opinion of him and also seeing them live in 2006-2008, and seeing him absolutely shred, and very different style from on the record, made me appreciate why ppl like him so much. Also some incredibly creative solo stuff, tho some of it also just a bit nutty

I don’t play any musical instruments or know anything about music theory, but I love music. All I know, is John Frusciante’s guitar playing and the Red Hot Chili Peppers sounds the best to me, and makes me feel the best and it makes me feel the most emotion. In fact, no band really comes anywhere close to how much I like rhcp. Does what I’m describing count for anything regarding Frusciante’s abilities, or am I just an idiot?

Something I think doesn't get brought up enough when discussing John Frusciantes playing in the late 90s and early 00s is the physical struggles he was freshly dealing with, he really had to change his playing style during that era due to a lot of muscle loss as a result of his years of extreme heroine addiction. His arms were so abscessed by the time he started to get clean that he nearly had to have them amputated. It's a wonder he was able to return to music in the capacity that he did so quickly. Not trying to change your opinion, just some stuff to keep in mind when analyzing his playing style on Californication.
