The short answer: a jake brake pops the exhaust valve open at the top of the compression stroke to release the compression that would otherwise push the piston back down like a spring.
@davidfrank66667 жыл бұрын
hey, mr thornhill, yor answer is still a little too short! after u release the compression, the exhaust valve closes, as the piston goes downward, all the valves are now closed, so now u have created a cylinder where no air can get in, this causes high vacuum, this causes the engine to be very hard to rotate. the vacuum is the only reason for this slow down! u know, just like a car engine when the throttle is closed, and the engine is spinning at a high rpm.
@andy166666 жыл бұрын
Nope. The compression itself also slows the engine down.

I always had complaint high med low are not holding that strongly even low med vibrates, CAT techs adjusted twice and said all good or use service kit. after putting new wire now found what real cat brake. can do when 100% .it was closed wire from year's decreasing current client from12.6 to broken wire.Current flows ECM to switch and then back.
@cwj92027 жыл бұрын
Just to add to Josh's excellent video, I would like to mention one additional malfunctioning scenario along with its repair. Occasionally, a computer controlled 340 Jake and other Jake models will remain on after the engine has decelerated to idle speed or remains on when accelerating. The problem lies with a broken control valve spring (there are two) per Jake. Just remove the valve cover(s) and the control valve cover(s) to replace the spring(s). Good luck locating just a new spring, though, as I have had to purchase the entire Jake Brake rebuild kit just to secure a new spring - so all the Jakes receive new parts minus the solenoids. If one desires to only replace the defective spring, the #1 and #2 dash Jake switches can be employed to narrow your troubleshooting efforts to locate the offending Jake.

Thank you going over the topic of Jake brakes. Maybe you've governed it before. HD Diesel over-the-road engines use high boost pressure in the range of 42 psi. to make much of their horsepower How does the Jake brake system produce such high braking hp nearly as high as when hot exhaust gases are generating high boost pressure for maximum engine power? With no combustion going on there is much less exhaust pressure to spin the turbo.

In an English class, the subject would be "Engine Brakes" followed by subsection (a) Compression Brakes, and that followed by subsection (b) Exhaust Brakes. I'm having an issue with an mbn that on settings 1 and 2 works fine but on 3 it's like it stays on setting 2 and doesn't get stronger like it should. Now I had a guy check them and he literally did nothing but take the valve covers off and checked the overhead and solenoids to see if they were working.. he said everything looked fine and normal.. put the covers back on, I go down the road and crazy enough they worked fantastic, for about a week and went back to the way it was .. I had decided to just deal with it.. but then I had diesel in my coolant or we thought, so they checked to see if I had injector cups leaking and to do that you gotta remove the Jake housings. Turned out to be oil and not diesel and it was the oil cooler... long story short they put it all back together and I drove it and wouldn't you know the Jake's worked fantastic again on all 3 settings, until a week later I lost 3rd again... with all that being said I'm thinking it must be a bad wire in the harness somewhere where they had inadvertently got it working for a while by maybe moving the harness and then it eventually wiggles itself loose and it loses signal again.. would that be logical or would it be something else? Any thoughts? Or what I could check

10-4. As Josh discussed in the video, since #3 and #4 jakes are controlled through the 1/3 switch positions, that would be the point of investigation, and as both those solenoids are unlikely to malfunction simultaneously, I would suspect an electrical issue. Good luck.

+sticK&Clutch The Jakes don't hurt the engine, they are designed to help slow the truck down and reduce wear on the service brakes. If the Jakes are malfunctioning then they shouldn't be used, but when they are in normal use they do not hurt the engine.

Motorcycles are probably the least respected motorists on the road, so they get a free hall pass on things to make them more noticeable to people in cars. There are also only a tiny fraction of people who drive them, how many motorcycles do you see on the road daily compared to trucks? You really only see them in numbers if there's a bike rally in town. Trucks on the other hand are everywhere and frequent. I don't necessarily have a problem with jake brakes - so long as they have a muffler to quiet them down. But I live over a mile from the freeway and when a straight pipe truck activates their jake brake, it's so loud that you can hear it even from indoors. The ban probably came from these guys who have unmuffled exhausts and are loud anyway, but are ear piercingly loud with the engine brake active.
@myredfast6 жыл бұрын
Trucks aren’t banned either. Jake brakes are only banned in certain areas. Also it’s the pipes on the bike that are loud and yes when they are over a certain decibel they ARE illegal. Enforcement is not a priority due to fact that only a very few people are such chronic complainers that would complain about bike pipes, also law enforcement knows loud pipes save lives

Hi, I am attempting to repair a c15 acert engine compression brake non-operational issue. All 3 brakes failed at the same time. All 3 brakes were tested via external 12 vdc power source, none would function with this method either. But, the solenoids can be heard clicking when power is applied. The check valve at the back end of the oil manifold has been verified operational. Wiring continuity has been confirmed between ecm and all brake solenoids as well. Both solenoid power signals have been proven via 1amp test light when brakes are supposed to operate. I am at odds on where to go from here. Is it possible that this engine simply needs overhead adjustments? Strange that all 3 failed at same time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (The IVA system is setting check engine light also. The wiring continuity has been verified between the IVA oil pressure sensor, as well as, the IVA oil warmup solenoid. Both components have been replaced with new, but no improvements were observed. How can the IVA circuit and system affect the compression brake functionality?)

Seems as if they are on low to medium even though the the switch is on high. I can move the switch from medium to high and it seems as if there’s hardly any difference at all. The mechanic at my shop checked the overhead and said it was out very little. These things are driving me crazy because they aren’t working properly. Also, in the mornings below freezing the truck skips and sputters when I start driving it for about 2 miles with lots of smoke out of the exhaust and raw fuel smell. Fuel filters have been replaced, but they are not cat filters. Also it doesn’t have the power that it should have. No engine codes at all. The mechanic at my shop doesn’t want to take it back to Cat because without an engine code he says they won’t touch it. I’m pretty mechanically inclined and been driving these for years. I know this engine isn’t operating properly. I want to try to fix it myself if i can. Can you help me with any advice at all? Thanks!

Adept ape thanks for the videos ,they are super helpful ,just had a question so I have a c15 single turbo engine and the exhaust brake quit working while driving and engine light came on ,when I checked the engine the engine oil was at the add mark on dipstick just wondering if low oil would cause the Jake's not to work??

I have a problem with my engine brake that i cant figure out. When its at higher rpms it works fantastic. When it gets down to 13 or less on the tac its breaks up, works and doesnt work in intervals. Is there a problem with the rpm sensor in the ecm? Or does it need to be hooked up to a conputer and adjusted? Im at a loss. Ive monitered oil pressure and such thinking the sensor was messing with it but no luck as it seems to be fine.

is this different because it's a diesel? in any regular car you're pretty much always engine braking if your foot is off the gas in gear and obviously it's more effective in lower gears.
@davidlovy12718 жыл бұрын
Diesel engines have very little drag when your foot is off of the accelerator. A gas engine has a fixed fuel to air ratio, and the power is controlled by changing both the air and fuel at the same time to maintain the ratio. The air is controlled by the throttle plate and produces a lot of drag when it is closed due to the high vacuum created during the intake stroke. In the original diesel design, there is no throttle plate to reduce the intake air. Diesel power is controlled by how much fuel you inject in, the air component is always the same and will only change when the engine and/or turbo speed changes. The fuel to air ratio in a diesel varies widely. A gas engine with your foot full on the accelerator and the key off has the same drag as a diesel with your foot off the the accelerator. If you have ever driven a gas car when the timing belt snaps, it also has very similar feeling to not having any engine braking. Without valve timing, there is no productive vacuum pumping happening.

I just recently purchased a 05 w900l when I got the truck the jake brakes work perfectly about 3 to 4 days ago they're stopped working they still come on but does not slow the engine down like it used to when I first purchased it what will cause that
@skeetersaurus62498 жыл бұрын
Good point made at 2:00 (Jakes are compression brakes, not exhaust brakes), but you keep using the term 'engine brakes' too, and a Jake brake is NOT an engine brake, as only gasoline engines can be 'engine-braked' (throttle release causing an air reduction at the manifold, which then causes a high manifold vacuum - this is not what happens in a diesel engine). Jake-brakes (Jacobs Vehicle Systems, by brand-name) are true compression brakes (I'm not sure if they still even make an 'exhaust-brake'). I like how Jacobs (the company, itself) loudly down-talks 'excessive volume trucks', and states clearly that there is 'no reason a properly functioning truck with a Jacobs system on it should exceed 85-decibels noise at 50-feet. They for years asked people to call police and report 'loud trucks', because the noise issue caused drivers not to be able to legally use them, often in places where safety and traffic would actually benefit from their use.
@AdeptApe8 жыл бұрын
+Skeeter Saurus I've never heard that about Jacobs and excessive volume trucks, that's an interesting story. The lack of a muffler is really the reason for the loud Jake's and not the brakes themselves, as I'm sure you know. I used the term engine brake throughout the video because that is what people call them and when a sign says no engine braking, it means compression brakes, even though Diesels produce very little vacuum in a no throttle input condition. Thanks for commenting.

So on my 3406E, stage 1 and 2 work, but stage 3 cuts out when my engine speed goes over 1500 rpm. It is getting bad. What is the culprit?

I also ran a simple push switch they have them to lay on its side on the floor board that way i could use the side of my boot to push in and Jake comes on release Jake goes off. It was wired through the Jake switch on the dash. I just hated using that button if I need to turn. Everyone that saw it had theirs done that way.had to clean a couple times in the winter with electric cleaner.......No offense you need a glass of water.

What if only low speed engine brake works, and truck has noticeably lack of power. I just finished installing new wiring harness, as my timing sensor wire was exposed and cut in half while driving

Hey, I need a little help. I have a rollback with a cat c7 motor & Allison transmission combination. it quit while I was driving on Friday, turns over has fuel and won't start. all my lights come on my dash when I turn the key besides my check engine light. I assumed the ecm isn't getting power but I don't know, I got a check engine light before it cut off while running at 68 mile per hour hit a bump then motor turned off.

Having a problem with my Jacob engine which only has (Off - lo -Hi) for the most part it works fine, except when I'm slowing down on a highway off ramp. When the engine rpms slow to about 13-14 rpms the engine start shacking rocking the whole truck. I just had my engine oil changed and it still does this...….What could it be?

While the jack brakes on with low ,medium And high, will the ECM cut the power source to Injector solinoids
@tomschilinski102 жыл бұрын
Well I’m not sure if you still monitor this or not. But you answered some of my questions… like why my Jake sounds the same on 2-3… and it doesn’t work on 1.. what are the chances of it just being a bad solenoid on stage 1. ? Hoping that’s all it is anyway…
@AdeptApe2 жыл бұрын
Usually Jake problems are input problems to the ECM more than hard component and solenoid problems in general.
