This song references the sad story of Jeffery Lucey, who committed suicide due to PTSD after serving in the Iraq war. War is hell. Waits is a genius.

This is one of my favorites from Waits. It's abrasive, it's brutal, it's traumatic, and it's honest. Thank you for your reaction.

Next to Road By Peace, I have never heard Tom as angry as he is on this track. In a 50 year career, that blows my mind. The album this came from is incredible. Tom has never lost his genius and remains true to the muse.

Road to peace is the first tom waits song I ever heard, I was hooked immediately. That man uses words like others use paint.

Wow, I’ve never seen this, but It certainly hits Home right about now. Tom Waits always had a voice that sounded like it hurt to speak or sing. Very unique!Thanks Jack and your reaction was spot on Harri.

We have to start saying NO to them. Kudos to Tom Waits for this nightmarish slap in the face. That image of a soldier trying to drag that promise of the GI bill through the remainder of his war-ruined life.. You know, he also writes and sings tender love ballads. Really hopefully, loving songs. Sometimes, however, it's essential that you deal unceremoniously with the rotting elephant in the room. PS Thanks for this one -

What a great anti war statement as onlyTom Waits can deliver a song! Powerful and impactful. As Harri points out, “stupid wars” inspire some amazing songwriting. Thanks Jack and Harri🌺✌️

The quote I heard from a veteran friend of mine, "your mind can't make sence of it. It's too loud out there and it's too quiet at home. You're just waiting. You know what it is and you don't at the same time at home and out in the field I don't NEED to think as much as I act. It's better to be useful somewhere as apposed to being useless at home." 😢 war is hell not just on the body and mind but also the spirit. God bless our troops. Sending out a prayer for yall.

Its hard when you have PTSD and and u csnt get anyone understand you. Tom Waits gives us words in this song... but with the emotion and grit that is needed to bring the message home.
@GOOGGZ4 ай бұрын
This exactly, most artists when covering topics as dark and gritty as this, they polish them too much, they make them too perfect. Tom waits is one of the few that can correctly depict the hatred and grit that is the topic of war.

Wow...I have to agree with a previous commentor, the angriest I've ever seen Tom. This is akin to Disturbed's cover of "The Sounds of Silence." The Clarion Call!

Hi there. Tom waits is a genius. Very very underrated (he really didn't care) . I suggest for you to listen to the introduction of the album "Night hawks for dinner " who would wright a song called "eggs and sauchese " ?? 🤣. It's record live in a blues/jazzy club where people could have a snack,drink,smoke, on round tables, with a low lamp in the middle. One can really feel the atmosphere surrounding it. You almost can smell the smoke and the kitchen and the bartender... you won't regretted. All the best for you❤😊

Tom Waits isn't underrated, he's totally recognized as one of the greatest songwriters of our times. What he is is underappreciated by the masses of the public.

What you say at around 2:16 reminds me of a German song called "Musik ist keine Lösung" = "Music is no solution" There is a part that means something like: "You thought that the job as a protest singer was crisis-proof. But if there was world peace, your songs would no longer be needed. If you free the hostages in Guantanamo and the global climate has returned to a status quo; I have to point this out without Schadenfreude but you sing yourself into unemployment. Admit it, you need the tears, the fear, the heroin junkies, the cancer sufferers, the gangs of thugs, the trafficking of girls, the military tyrants, the hate campaigns, the toxic substances that end up in the oceans..." Same line of thought. People celebrate this music that can only exist because of the awfulness of people.

This song isn't just any anti-war song. It specifically cites things & policies by the Bush administration during the war on Iraq. Like, the Bush administration banned journalists from releasing pictures of soldiers' coffins instead they funded propaganda parades in sports like the NFL.
